The Bold Type Trippin Review: "Hey Mama"

Huzzah! After weeks of what have felt like Jane-centric episodes (not that we're complaining), The Bold Type's penultimate episode of the season shifted a little focus away from her and onto Sutton.

With Paris fashion week steadily approaching and a copy no good, Sutton took Kat and Jane on a road trip to her home town to fetch her original birth certificate. During said trip she of course ran into her mother, and after all the horror stories Sutton had delivered, Kat and Jane were expecting the worst. Instead what they were greeted with was a woman who had a grip on herself, and was trying to change her life.

Unfortunately for her, Sutton wasn't buying it. Too many times in the past she'd been let down by her mother's proclamations of changing her ways, only to end up right back where she'd started. Cry wolf too many times and no-one will be there when you really need help, and if you claim to change your ways too many times? No-one will believe you when you actually do. With Sutton keeping her mum at arms length and rejecting all of her attempts at building bridges, it was left to Jane to talk some sense into her best friend by pointing out she still has a mother.

It's not a card I really appreciated Jane playing. Sure her heart was in the right place, but everyone's family situations are different and a person shouldn't be guilt-tripped into giving another chance to someone they view as toxic. Sure, in this case Sutton's mother had really changed her ways and all was well with the world, but Jane had no way of knowing that and constantly playing the dead mum card is tedious.

On the relationship front this week, Kat very much noticed all was not well between her and Adena. Due to the open relationship they haven't been seeing each other as much, and this was leading to Kat missing out on doing fun things with her girlfriend like visiting a gallery. Sure she enjoyed other girl's sending her nudes and another cute chick hitting on her, but the exploration of sexuality wasn't worth it in the end. The only thing Kat truly wanted, which is the only thing she's wanted since the beginning, is Adena. So she decided to end the open relationship as Adena was all she needed, but there still seems to be a bit of distance between the two of them, which I'm sure the finale will explore in a bit more depth.

The finale is also going to have to deal with Jane's relationship drama. After last week's revelations over her health, Ben was in full on Doctor mode which Jane didn't want and Pinstripe's attempts to be a shoulder to cry on went a bit south. Getting drunk and singing a wonderful rendition of 'Torn' seemed to help Jane a little with her relationship woes. Ben realized he'd over-stepped the mark a little and they were soon being a bit adventurous by taking part in public displays of sex in the bathroom. Not all fun and games though is Pinstripe basically offering himself on a plate to Jane. It's been extremely clear this season that whilst Ben is a lovely guy who is wonderful enough to Jane, he's a bit too close to perfect for one's taste? Pinstripe & Jane's relationship originally broke down before it even really started due to him being a playboy who was incapable of being monogamous. Now he's potentially deciding he can actually be with one person, and Jane may have a decision on her hand next week in whether she wants to continue being with Ben or try to go forward with Pinstripe.

Another lil crumb for next week is what is going on with Jacqueline?! She's usually our fierce lioness, but after a spate of bad press, her position is now being brought into question. She didn't help herself deciding to get rid of the website's comment section, despite Kat advising her against the move, and then reacted even worse when Kat tried to get Richard to intervene. From their conversation it is clear the board are getting a bit of itchy feet over Jacqueline's place at Scarlett. Is she going to be fired? Maybe face a job demotion? Or just live to see another glorious day?

You can tune into The Bold Type's 2nd season finale next week where hopefully our questions will be answered, ahead of the 3rd season!

A Band Called Jack Release New Single 'Voices'

Following support slots with Paolo Nutini, BBC Radio support and an iTunes Top 10 chart placing for their last single Kiss Me, Manchester folk-rockers A Band Called Jack are back with their new single Voices (out now on MST Sounds).

"Voices is song that tackles Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, which are topics and illnesses we take seriously as it’s touched us - as we are sure it has many others” explains guitarist Matt Brookes. “All of our songs have a simple formula, in that if it works stripped right back to just an acoustic guitar and vocal then you aren’t far off. We’re working on the album now and we felt Voices is a great introduction to the band and the new songs.”

As a long-time fixture in Manchester as part of the same arts scene that produced Elbow and David Gray, the band officially formed in 2010, and has worked their way up from gigs in empty pubs to giant crowds at the Castlefield Arena. Following in the musical lineage of North-West guitar pop, their folk-leaning songs and relentless work ethic are gaining the band a loyal fanbase evidenced by iTunes chart placings and sold out shows.

They are currently hard at work on their long-awaited debut album.

Hailing from Manchester, the band creates melody intense and woven indie folk rock; a creative concoction which openly relishes the imagination and embraces the inspirations each member of A Band Called Jack brings to it. Almost inevitably, being bred within their city’s one of a kind music and art scene, the 2010 formed quintet draw on Manchester’s heritage and influences but have quickly nurtured a presence and sound inescapably individual to themselves.

Each of their songs comes with its own character, a personality and energy which flourish within the speakers as potently as they do electrically bold or acoustically bare on stage. The latter side of the outfit has emulated the growth of their sound. From playing small venues and before audiences barely able to be called a crowd, A Band Called Jack has shared a stage with The Chameleons, played a tour with Big Country, and supported support Paolo Nutini in front of 10,000 people at Castlefield Arena; the A Band Called Jack giving and embracing every show with mutual passion.

Having inked up with young and spirited record label MST SOUNDS, A Band Called Jack are ready to tease, tickle, and stir up major attention with a debut album which echoes and romps with the band’s craft and imagination across a collection of tracks as different as they are united in melodic enterprise and emotive expression.

Geoff practises his straight jacket trick but finds himself stuck in it when he loses the key. Yasmeen despairs. Imran returns to the office and tells Adam about his new case. Adam warns him that Sally is very highly thought of and he’s playing with fire.

Abi assures Steve that their kiss meant nothing as she was completely sloshed. Steve and Abi return from the jewellers having chosen an engagement ring for Tracy. Steve presents Tracy with the ring. To his relief, Tracy’s absolutely thrilled with it.

(Picture: ITV)
Alya watches Aidan’s DVD and realises just how much his family meant to him.

Elsewhere Peter’s gutted. When Gemma calls in the pub, Jenny offers her an olive branch and suggests she might like to work behind the bar. Gemma buries her pride and accepts the job.

Rana Faces Devastation In Coronation Street Next Week

It's safe to say Rana has had a quieter time on screen as of late, but that is all set to change next week as her parents come back onto the scene.

The drama kicks off when Hassan pays Imran a visit and reveals that Imran is invited to his 6oth birthday party but Rana isn't, which leaves Imran appaled and he refuses to attend.

In case you're in need of a reminder, relations between Rana and her parents soured earlier this year, when Zeedan angrily outed her affair with Kate. Whilst at the time her affair with Kate was over and Rana + Zeedan agreed to stay together in return for her parents investing in Speed-Daal, Kate and Rana were unable to stay away from each other for too long and their rekindled relationship was discovered by her parents & Alya walking in on her and Kate together.

That of course led to Rana's mother Saira falsely claiming a relative was ill to try and trick Rana into going to Pakistan with her, said trickery thankfully being uncovered and Kate stopping the taxi before the others joined her side and an angry confrontation with Rana's parents ensued. In the aftermath Kate contacted the police to report Rana's parents for trying to kidnap her, which didn't go down well with any party and since then Kate & Rana's relationship has moved on to the next stage with her parents very much out of the picture.

That is all changing during next week's Coronation Street, and knowing that her father will only blame her for rejecting the party invitation, Rana persuades Imran to attend the party. On Wednesday's first episode of Coronation Street she's left sad as she watches Imran, suited and booted, leave for their Dad’s party. Later though Rana is clearly shocked as she tells Kate that Imran called from the party where their Dad has collapsed.

(Picture: ITV)

In what are sure to be difficult scenes in Wednesday's 2nd visit to the street, Imran breaks the news to Rana at the hospital that Hassan has had a stroke. But any hopes of putting their issues aside at least temporarily are quashed, as Saira bans her daughter from visiting him much to Rana's devastation. Imran points out to Saira that should Hassan die, she will have denied him his last chance to see his daughter. Rana confronts Saira and points out that had she not been banned from her Dad’s party, she would have recognised his symptoms and could possibly have saved his life.

There's further bad news in Friday's visit as Imran informs Yasmeen his ex-wife is after every penny she can get and as a result, he has to sell his share of Speed Daal. A distraught Rana confides in Kate how the hospital refuses to discuss Hassan’s condition as her mother has told them she’s estranged from the family. Imran calls at the hospital with Rana and persuades Saira to let her attend their meeting with the consultant.

(Picture: ITV)
Whilst Saira does reluctantly agree, she makes it clear Rana is nothing more than their interpreter, and Imran is soon distracted by work matters as he's called to the Police Station to meet his new client Duncan. After it was recently discovered that Duncan is in fact a fraudster, Sally has been left in a world of trouble and that looks set to get worse as Duncan explains to Imran he's been charged with fraud for stealing Charity funds, but claims he was coerced into it by Sally Metcalfe leaving Imran shocked.

Will Rana be able to reconcile with her parents? Will Imran regret taking Duncan on as a client? Tune in next week to find out!

Uncomely Release New Single + Video For 'Fun Times'

UK DIY ROCKERS UNCOMELY UNLEASH ‘FUN TIMES’ SINGLE & VIDEO

Multi-national, Leeds-based DIY noise-rock collective Uncomely have released the first taste of their new Games People Play EP. The abrasive, grunge-funk-punk sound of Fun Times is the lead track for the new record (available from Friday 27th July), and arrives with a striking and cinematic new video. The song was helmed by Pulled Apart By Horses/Cribs producers Jamie Lockhart and Lee Smith at Greenmount Studios.

“We collaborated with a cinematographer who’s had their work featured at Cannes Film Festival to create the video for the track” explains frontman Artyom. “It was filmed at the disused American Cold War listening station in Berlin, Teufelsberg (German for Devil’s Mountain). We were really inspired by the site’s history and how it has since become a hotspot for street artists, musicians and videographers.”

Consisting of two Latvians, an Italian and an Englishman, Uncomely are primarily inspired by the wave of grunge and punk rock bands revolutionised music in the 1990s. Having found a base in Yorkshire, the band are keen collaborators and have worked with producers, artists, directors and photographers all over Europe in their quest to create challenging and authentic work. Their debut release, a self-produced and self-released mixtape in 2017, was a thrilling collision of fuzz guitars and manic vocals and the new Games People Play EP tackles hard-hitting subjects like addiction and mental health.

The Chainsmokers & Emily Warren, Charli XCX, Precious Kid and Sigala + The Vamps Are Our Music Monday Picks

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for the freshest tunes for our playlist and you dear readers, and in Music Monday we're bringing you the top tunes of the week!

WHAT. A. SONG. There have been many bangers released this summer so far, and undoubtedly The Chainsmokers latest hit 'Side Effects' featuring Emily Warren is one of them. From start to finish this song is pop perfection, superb both musically and lyrically. The beat break as the song reaches its climax is reminiscent of MNEK's 'Tongue', another song which should be rooted to your playlist. There is absolutely no doubt you will be breaking the replay button on this song, and it won't be long before it's sitting high at the top of the chart.

Another top track from Charli XCX has arrived in 'Girls Night Out'. It's giving us 80's vibes which we are completely here for. Destined to be a Eurodance anthem, it's a fun, feel good song that Charli does ever so well. She's released a few bops this year in '5 in the Morning' and 'Focus/No Angel', but this is undoubtedly the best of the bunch. If you're hearing a sound that is extremely familiar to the Spice Girls + early Madonna, then fear not because you're not the only one!

For those unfamiliar with the band, Precious Kid are a 3 piece rock band from California and 'Was It Worth the Love Song' is an absolute smash in waiting. It's the perfect type of Pop/Rock anthem that sounds like something straight out of the 80's and the music video matches the tone perfectly. It's also the perfect type of IDGAF post break-up song that I really wish more Artists would do.

Finishing off this week is Sigala's latest collaboration, this time with The Vamps. 'We Don't Care' is another summer stomper that is destined to rule the charts. The beats are fresh, lyrics avoid sounding too generic, and it's a lovely chill anthem. The Vamps have also recently announced their 2019 tour which will see them playing in a number of cities in the US and UK. You can find dates along with ticket information here

Wynonna Earp When You Call My Name Review: "That Hurt"

Wow! 3 seasons in and being a Wynonna Earp viewer, you know this is THAT fun show which has the banter, the character interactions, quick quips, and the ability to turn an episode onot its head and leave you completely and utterly wrecked.

3 seasons in we also know when an episode is hyped as being a game changer? Something extremely bad is coming. Yet despite knowing this? The events of 'When You Call My Name' were no less devastating.

The episode started off when last weeks episode left us. Waverly & Wynonna had been in a car crash, with Waverly being captured, her voice stolen and a revenant deciding that since his woods had long dried up in providing meal time? Eating people was the next best thing and Waverly was destined to be his next meal.

But of course this is Wynonna Earp, and where other shows would have our hero be dazed, confused, beaten down and completely oblivious to a life being in danger, the only thing Wynonna can think about is her sister. After suffering her own injuries in the crash, she's visited by a figment of her mother that lives in her head. She provides Wynonna with just the pep talk that is needed to get her back up the mountain, and into the woods.

There though they come into disagreement with figment mum wanting Wynonna to prioritize her own life over saving Waverly, and Wynonna being resolute that she has a team who will realize they're in trouble and come to help. Figment mum thinks having a team has made Wynonna weak and the only person she can count on is herself.

Getting an inkling from her phone call with Waverly that all was not well, Nicole ventured off in her car, where she came across a hunter out on his travels and he alerted her to the car crash. The alarm was quickly raised and whilst Wynonna found her way to the revenants home and played a rather interesting game of charades with a voiceless Waverly as she tried to rescue her, Nicole and Doc were soon on their trail.

After a brief chase in the woods Mr. revenant was no more, but not before revealing himself to be extremely afraid of the notion of Bulshar rising. Clearly whilst vampires think him being resurrected is so great they're coming to Purgatory for a party, there are other revenants who are just as scared of his presence as our gang.

With Waverly out of the cage and voice returned, she once again confronted Wynonna over their mother and Wynonna was forced to reveal she'd known where their mother was the whole time. Their mother not wanting Waverly to know where she was didn't really do much to quell the anger that Waverly understandably has. It's going to take a little bit of time before that wound heals, and hopefully there will be some more Earp family moments on the horizon.

You'd think the gang being all rescued and the Earp momma drama would be enough for this episode, but nope! With peacemaker down a cliff, it was left to Nicole and all of her experiencing mountain climbing to retrieve Wynonna's gun. Unfortunately they had company in the shape of Bulshar's henchman, who cut the rope and left Wynonna desperately clinging to it, and Nicole's life. Wynonna could only watch on helplessly as Dolls engaged in a fight with the henchman to keep him distracted, long enough to try and get Nicole back up the cliff. The rope continuing to slip, Nicole urged Wynonna to just let her go but she couldn't do that.

They are a team which never leaves anyone behind, and had Wynonna given in to Nicole's wishes and let her go, Wynonna never would've forgiven herself and Waverly would've joined her in that.

Earlier in the episode Jeremy was attempting to warn Doc and Dolls that his condition was getting worse. Dolls isn't the type of person that likes a fuss and prefers to focus on saving others, so of course he ignored Jeremy's warning.

Doc on the other hand was just concerned over what Dolls going unclear would mean for the rest of them. It's clear he still has a lot of anger and resentment over Dolls shooting him, and as a consequences sending him to hell. He believes that taking a life makes him and Dolls the same as each other, but Dolls rightly pointed out that Doc is far more self serving than he ever could be, and is really only interested in joining the fight when it's his life on the line. Outside of any danger to himself, Doc does tend to stay out of things unless he's forced into intervening.

It was an extremely interesting conversation between the two men, who have had their issues ever since they first laid eyes on each other. The fact though they were having such a conversation over their issues, and of course Jeremy's warnings of peril was enough to confirm Dolls was meeting his maker this episode but it didn't make the death hurt any less. Nicole immediately called it in and attempted CPR on Dolls, whilst Doc and Wynonna looked on crestfallen and Waverly was forced to deliver Jeremy's news that Dolls was indeed dead.

Regardless of whether you like the character or not, it was a devastating ending. Wynonna refused to leave his side explaining that he didn't like the woods, and still wanted to believe that he would come back from it. Once again showing why they're the best sibling relationship TV land has to offer, Waverly put her issues with Wynonna aside to comfort her big sister.

Next weeks episode will see the gang having to deal with the consequences and their feelings regarding Doll's death, and I'm looking forward to it. Far too often when a character dies, we're given a time jump, or the aftermath of their death is played down. This is the first major death that Wynonna Earp has felt since it started 3 years ago, and it'll be interesting to see just how they come to grips with it.

Even more worrying? Big, show changing deaths usually occur towards the end of the season or as a cliffhanger to take us into the next one. They do NOT usually happen in the 2nd episode, and with 10 episodes still left to go, the rather worrying question is what else is in store for us?

Charlie Hole Releases New Single 'Someone Else's Dream'

Hold on to the dreams of Charlie Hole

Born and raised in the coastal town of Bournemouth, UK, Charlie Hole is nowadays one of the most exciting young singer-songwriters around. With a brave and honest voice, tackling relatable subject matters for all audiences, he has already been coined by Rod Stewart as an emerging talent with a gift for writing 'beautiful songs’. One can hear influences of Matt Simons, Rod Stewart, James Bay en John Mayer.

After a chance meeting with well-respected guitarist and producer Jim Cregan (Rod Stewart, Katie Melua, Family), the pair began working closely together, with Jim mentoring Charlie and teaching him about the world of songwriting while always pushing him to develop his own style and sound.

The second single from his upcoming album Beautiful Decay is here now.

Charlie about his new single Someone Else´s Dream:

"There’s an old quote that says, “If you don’t follow your own dreams, you’ll end up following someone else’s”, and there was a certain point in my life where I felt like I wasn’t staying true to what I wanted to do. I wrote Someone Else’s Dream whilst driving away from a particularly bad gig in the early hours of the morning. There’s something about a long drive at night that helps with self-reflection, and I was trying to work out what it was I was trying to achieve, and questioning whether I wanted to do this to myself anymore. I felt like I was stuck, like I wasn’t getting anywhere, I wasn’t moving forwards and that’s where the doubt crept in.

The song is about resilience; holding on to your dreams and not giving up in the face of adversity. I suppose at it’s heart, it’s about staying true to your own dreams, and not following someone else’s."

"This guy's got potential" - Rod Stewart

"Charlie keeps getting better, evolving as a songwriter" - Steve Harley

Someone Else´s Dream is released this week and available for purchase/streaming on all known digital platforms.

Harlea Releases New Single 'Beautiful Mess'

Roxy Princess Present Harlea And her new single Beautiful Mess

RIYL: Portugal The Man, AnneMarie, Jess Glynne

"A formidable and pulsing entrance” – NME
“A powerful talent” – Clash

Birmingham born, London raised Harlea made quite the entrance last year with her debut tracks Miss Me and You Don’t Get It.

High praise came from NME, The Line of Best Fit, Guardian, Dazed and Clash, plus BBC Radio 1 support from Phil Taggart. Both tracks also made Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist, which resulted in over 1.25 million streams on the platform and You Don’t Get It was a Hype Machine top 5.

Now Harlea is back with her new single Beautiful Mess which has jumped straight on to Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist (like her previous releases) and is the first release on her own imprint Roxy Princess.

Debuted first during her performance at The Great Escape in May, Beautiful Mess is Harlea’s step into the limelight: a stylish, hook filled future classic. It’s produced by American super-producers Rock Mafia who have sold over 50 million records worldwide for artists like Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Ellie Goulding and the list goes on.

Talking about Beautiful Mess, Harlea adds, “This song is powerful, edgy and relatable to the world in which we live. Life is the most beautiful gift we have but humanity has an inbuilt destructive nature, which inevitably creates a mess. This single shows another side of who I am as an artist, when compared to my previous releases. Still edgy but with a more contemporary feel”

The accompanying video for Beautiful Mess was shot in the Californian desert by director Abraham Roofeh and features British poets Robert Montgomery and Greta Bellamacina.

Harlea knew she wanted Robert and Greta in the video, feeling they were a perfect fit for the song, “I had a vision of provocative words speaking ugly truths with a powerful blaze ripping through them. I instantly thought of Rob and Greta as I suspect it was their imagery that inspired my vision. Their art provokes society into self-examination and while filming we asked 40 people what the words in the “fire poem” at the end of the video meant? Everyone replied with something different and thought provoking”

Leaving her home in Birmingham at the age of 16, the enigmatic Harlea moved to London to become a model, “I left because I hated school and knew, that whatever I was going to do - it would be creative and did not require me to sit in a classroom” she told Dazed & Confused, “I was done. So I left and moved to London and modelled but was always interested in music.”

There’s much planned for Harlea this summer around the release of Beautiful Mess including further live dates and radio appearances. For more details please visit her website.

The Reverse Family to Release New Single Seven Golden Vampires on 31st August

Seven Golden Vampires is the brand new single from The Reverse Family on 31st August. Each song represents a single day in the life of lead singer Dermot Illogical. We Are The Team is day no 361 and each track offers a unique experience, a mini drama, a vignette, however dramatic or routine, emotionally charged or neutral, all reflecting the trials, pressures, normalities, mundanities everyone might experience in any given 24 hours.

The band have racked up a Fubar Radio, Express FM and Radio Woking session and have received plays on Radio Woking, Soundlab Radio, ICR FM, Siren FM, Blast FM, Bridge FM Dundee, Way Out Radio, Express FM, Punky Radio, Surrey Hills Radio, Dapper FM, Radio 2XS, Vixen 101, Shoreditch Radio, Radio Northumerland, Aural Delights, Control Radio and many more with previous releases.

Reverse Family is the solo project of Dermot Illogical, aided by a fluid band of collaborators from time to time, this debut offering is a lo-fi exploration into an experimental DIY web of sounds and flavours which is hard to pin down but certainly embraces everything from post punk and noise pop to indie and old school punk. In this day and age, in music and recording, because of the immediate hands on technology available, so much emphasis is placed on crafting, shaping, controlling, polishing that any sense of spontaneity or evidence of the initial composition can be eradicated. Through this misguided desire to seek perfection, the undesirable mess of accident, glitch, character and, god forbid, human error is wiped clean. 365 sets out to redress the balance!

By allowing the elements of simplicity, chance and accident to live and breathe, 365 takes on an appropriate punk ethic to achieve a punk sound! The decision to start 365 was the light of inspiration in an otherwise dark place, to create something positive from the black swamp of personal despair at the time of the death of a great friend and band mate, going through divorce, dealing with the serious illness of both parents among other traumas took Dermot to the edge... With a tongue in cheek lining to the lyrical reflection shaping songs which spreads into the music itself, Reverse Family is a beguiling adventure with a nod to the past and a grip on an imagination as fresh as it is, well quite simply a touch loco.
