CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Hello 95

Hello and welcome to the next Chapter in our Throwback Thursday series. We've travelled through 80's Pop/Rock/RnB/Reggae/Dance. Now we're having a stop-over in the 90's. It was a glorious 10 years for fashion, technology & of course music. Some songs changed the landscape of music forever whilst some were unfortunate one-hit wonders & for the next 5 weeks we'll be bringing you 5 great songs.

The Artist: Coolio ft LV
The Song: Gangsta's Paradise
Released: 1995

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This hit #1 on both the UK and US charts eventually going 2 times platinum in the UK and 3 times platinum in the US. That's quite a feat for a song to achieve, especially considering it came from the movie Dangerous Minds soundtrack. I'll confess I didn't come across this song until much later (but in defense this isn't the type of song a 5-9yr old kid would typically come across). What drew me to the song originally was the chorus. What later kept me coming back to the song was the story the lyrics are telling. It's still extremely relatable 21yrs later, whether that's a good or bad thing is down to the individual.

The Artist: Ace Of Base
The Song: Beautiful Life
Released: 1995

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Another Throwback Thursday entry for Ace Of Base, who I did warn would be featuring throughout our 90's special a lot. As much as I like them I don't think a song can be classed as a success reaching #15 on both the UK & US main charts, though it did hit #1 on the US Dance. I like the feel good factor to the song. Video isn't the best I've ever seen but it was the 90's, when we were only just getting to grips with the technology at our disposal, so I'll let them off.

The Artist: TLC
The Song: Waterfalls
Released: 1995

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
TLC was it when I was growing up. I wasn't so much into there music, but even I can agree this song is great. It reached #4 in the UK and #1 in the US which is pretty good. Lyrically and visually this song is perfect. It tackles issues such as illegal drug trade & HIV/AIDs & does a great job at covering these issues without being preachy. It's a song that is well known & still extremely popular even in today's music, which is quite something to achieve.

The Artist: Oasis
The Song: Wonderwall
Released: 1995

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
The song reached #2 on the UK Charts & #8 on Billboard before going on to be certified Gold in 3 Countries along with Platinum. This song is an absolute monster and it'd be musical sacrilege if I didn't include it here. From the moment the music starts, you know what's playing. You know when the vocals are gonna come in, and you're ready to sing along in your best booming voice. It's hard to sum up why this is one of Oasis's most popular song, and indeed one of the best songs ever made. I've heard the odd cover over the years, and whilst the song doesn't lose its magic, they just don't capture the emotion like Oasis do.

The Artist: The Rembrandts
The Song: I'll Be There For You
Released: 1995

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
How could I not include this song? It ruled the 90's as the 'Friends' opening theme. You know? One of the greatest comedy shows ever (that's not my opinion by the way but an actual fact). It topped the US Chart for 8 glorious weeks & #3 in the UK. I know most people's knowledge of the song begins & ends with 'Friends', but it's actually a pretty awesome feel good song. It's got some really powerful lyrics that go with a nice funky beat so it's not too overwhelming. The video's really fun as well with the 'Friends' cast featuring.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Ahh White Lies, how I have missed you from my life. My ears were first graced with their music when I came across 'Fairwell To The Fairground' all the way back in 2011, and they've been one of my favourite bands since. After a 3yr break, they are back with a brand new album and some more belters. 'Come On' is a bit of a slow burner, not really kicking in until the middle, but it is well worth the wait. White Lies are an English band and you can pre-order the album Friends which comes out on the 7th October.

You may remember a lil old song called 'Other Side Of The World' which was a lil old smash back in 2005. Well 4 albums & pursuing a career in move soundtracks later, KT Tunstall is back with a brand new album and feast of songs for you to digest. I was intrigued by this song from the moment I pressed play, and I'm pleased to say it does not dissapoint. I think the lyrics have an interesting message to them which can resonate with a lot of people, and the music's strong enough without over powering. I don't think the video necessarily goes with the song, but it's worth keeping an eye out for the cameo at the end. KIN is out now.

I know what you're thinking and the answer is yes; I've selected quite the tunes this week (well I do so everywhere but let's try and be modest). This is actually a mixed bag for me since I loved Tom's first album ('Can't Pretend' and 'Hold Me' have been a mainstay on my mp3 since the album's release) but the new album isn't exactly blowing me away. I like this song, even if there's a few samples mixed in I can't quite put my finger on, and the video's interesting enough. I love how big the song gets as it reaches the finale, and there's no doubt that Tom's one of the best male singer/songwriters out there. Wrong Crowd is out now and maybe with a few more listens it will grow on me.

Stables are a duo that should be familiar to you, since they're one of many bands we play here at CONTROLRadioUK. I've had the joy of giving their album a listen for a review that will be up on CONTROLRadioUK within the next few weeks so look out for that. This song is absolutely beautiful from start to finish, lyrics are quite deep and the music's very haunting at the beginning as it grows into the song. I adore the video both for the story it's telling that fits perfectly with the song, and of course the scenery. How can I not talk about those gorgeous shots of the sea, blue sky & countryside? Stables debut album Beyond Bushes is out now.

Ok lyrically this song is extremely basic and the music is a little bit repetitive, but I can't help the fact it's caught me and I can't stop dancing to it (starting to believe the Hypothermic Syringe Theory isn't just about violence in the media, but that's a question best left for my next College paper) The lyric video's about standard, but I do like some of the colours used along with the world map since I'm always forgetting where Countries are. Dillion Francies is an American DJ, Record Producer & Internet Celebrity, and clearly I'm doing the Internet wrong since I'd never heard of him before this track. So you're getting a Geography lesson during a dance along, and discovering a new artist. What more could you want?

CONTROLRadiouk Presents Throwback Thursday: Songs Of 94

Hello and welcome to the next Chapter in our Throwback Thursday series. We've traveled through 80's Pop/Rock/RnB/Reggae/Dance. Now we're having a stop-over in the 90's. It was a glorious 10 years for fashion, technology & of course music. Some songs changed the landscape of music forever whilst some were unfortunate one-hit wonders & for the next 6 weeks we'll be bringing you 5 great songs.

The Artist: Salt 'N' Peppa with En Vogue
The Song: Whatta Man
Released: 1994

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Another cover to feature in our Throwback Special's, with the original by Linda Lynell, another smash reaching #7 on the UK Charts & #3 on Billboard. It's also another song from another band that was popular in my household. The video spells out the message of the songs adult nature, but it didn't stop us singing the chorus loud and proud on the school playground. I actually count 'Let's Talk About Sex' & 'Push It' amongst my favorite songs. Aside from the fact it's when I was born, I love the music of the 90's so much because it opened you up to sensitive subjects without you even realizing it. Parents absolutely hated it, demanding school's ban certain songs from parties & disco's, but it was always fun and made you feel like you were an outlaw.

The Artist: Haddaway
The Song: Rock My Heart
Released: 1994

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Ahh Haddaway. The King of 90's school parties. I felt bad not including 'What Is Love' during the hits of 93, but there was so much fantastic music in the 90's it's sometimes hard to pick. 'Rock My Heart' wasn't quite as big as that reaching #9 in the UK and #25 in the US but I still love this song nonetheless. I'm not sure if it was intentional but the overall sound of the song is very similar to 'What Is Love'. The music video with the costumes and props hasn't aged well over the years, but isn't that part of the reason the 90's is loved so much? Looking back over old TV Shows/Movies/Music Videos as well as childhood photo's, and questioning what on earth you were doing?

The Artist: Ace Of Base
The Song: The Sign
Released: 1994

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
I'm gonna start by saying I absolutely hate Ace Of Base for not releasing the beast that is 'Captain Nemo' is a single. It would've smashed the world and I'm forever bitter that it was only ever an album track. Stepping back 4 years though, Ace Of Base gave us this beauty which smashed the world. Ace Of Base were a magnificent band that gave us songs that do still hold up today & 'The Sign' has been used in a number of TV Shows & Movies over the years.

The Artist: Sheryl Crow
The Song: All I Wanna Do
Released: 1994

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Another song that ruled 90's disco's and parties. This song hit #4 in the UK and #2 in the US, certified Silver & Gold. Oh how I remember the days of waking up to this song playing on the radio. This song is just so chilled out, relatable & was the first Pop/Country Guitar-based song I ever heard. It's still Sheryl's biggest hit and has spawned various covers over the years.

The Artist: Kylie Minogue
The Song: Confide In Me
Released: 1994

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Ending this week we have one of the most iconic and innovative songs to come from the 90's. It's also recognized as an important period of Kylie's career and 'musical reinvention'. Most people agree it's the best thing Kylie ever did, so how could I not include it? The song incorporates Indie-Music/Dance-Pop/Middle Eastern instrumentation with the strings & percussion's and the lyrical content, Kylie's vocals & the video do what they say on the tin.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

I love space. If I could take this audio video, print it out and hang it on my wall I would. So we've got that out the way. Vocally this track reminds me a lot of Caged The Elephant which I don't think is too bad a comparison to make. After a summer of dance music I am ready to listen to some rock and this track doesn't dissapoint in the slightest. I love lyrics that have a story to them, instead of being a bunch of words put together by a rhyming book. That said I find some of the lyrics a little repetitive, not really going anywhere & I've heard stronger songs covering the subject of identity and being happy with a place in the world. But they're winning me over here since I like the music and really enjoy the climax of the song. Highly Suspect is an American Rock Band which formed in 2009, and the new album's available for pre-order now.

Last week I was Rick-rolled for the first time in over 2yrs. It made me hate that song & want to avoid Rick Astley for the next decade all over again. But then I heard this song & was reminded Rick? Not so bad. Rick-rolled? Got old a long time ago. The chorus is a little generic for my taste but I'm not gonna be too critical because they act as the songs hook, so they need to be catchy. The video I think is quite fun, though the bit with the devil reminds me slightly of Tenacious D 'Tribute'. The lyrics aren't too bad but they don't really grab me, and the music isn't as strong as I'd like. It's still a nice feel good song though that has been stuck in my head. Rick Astley is an Artist you probably know (albeit possibly for the wrong reason) and his new album's out now.

Ahh Epica. I just don't want to quit you. Ever since I stumbled across 'Universal Death Squad', I have been enjoying their music. There is just something about their music which stands out from the rest of the crowd. Their lyrics & official music video's are a spectacle to watch, and I can rock out to their songs all night. Lyrically 'Edge Of The Blade' is quite the song to even attempt to dissect, and I do like songs that make me think out of the box. They also remind me a little bit in their sound of Evanescence (yes this is the week where I'm going to annoyingly compare everyone to everyone & brag about my great taste in music) Their new album comes out on September 30's & I'm looking forward to giving it a listen.

Ever since I came across 'Too Much To Dream' a few months back now, I have been loving Allie's music. It is so gorgeous and it's rare for me to come across an Artist/Band and love every song of their's. That's exactly what I have with Allie though. This isn't an absolute monster like 'All The Rage' is, but it's still a mighty fantastic track. The lyrics are catchy and have a story to them which is extremely relatable. I absolutely love the music & the chorus has been stuck in my head since I first press play. If you haven't listened to her music, it is not to late to press play and thank me later because you won't regret it.

Ok so this video's a little weird. But I am constantly told that weird is good. Helps you stand out from the crowd and such. Well the video doesn't do anything for me, but this song is my jam. I can't quite put my finger on what it is I like so much about it. Lyrically I could say this song is quite possibly dark, honestly though I'm too busy dancing to this song to really pay attention (I know, bad Sammy!) Fickle Friends are an English Indie/Pop band from Brighton who are currently working on their debut album, and I've very intrigued to see what it sounds like.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Hits Of 93

Hello and welcome to the next Chapter in our Throwback Thursday series. We've travelled through 80's Pop/Rock/RnB/Reggae/Dance. Now we're having a stop-over in the 90's. It was a glorious 10 years for fashion, technology & of course music. Some songs changed the landscape of music forever whilst some were unfortunate one-hit wonders & for the next 7 weeks we'll be bringing you 5 great songs.

The Artist: DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
The Song: Boom! Shake The Room
Released: 1993

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
The song hit #1 on the UK Chart & #13 in the US and went on to be certified Gold. It continues the 90's trending of mixing innuendo which is quite funny to look back on. It's probably not as well known as some of Will Smith's other songs, but I absolutely love it. As a kid, I enjoyed bouncing my head to the chorus and the song helped introduce me to Fresh Prince Of Bel Air which ran from 1990 to 1996.

The Artist: Proclaimers
The Song: I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Released: 1993

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
How could I not include this song? It's their most popular song worldwide, synonymous with pop culture and an absolute classic. I came across this during Comic Relief of 2007 and loved it. The guitar at the beginning that runs throughout the song is great. Lyrically I don't think the song is that great, but when you have fantastic music & a chorus you can't help singing along with, what does it matter?

The Artist: Duran Duran
The Song: Ordinary World
Released: 1993

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This isn't one of Duran Duran's most popular songs, but it's my favorite and I can't believe I've gone so far in these TBT Special's without featuring them. It hit #6 on the UK chart and #3 on Billboard. I love everything about this song from the music to the lyrics and of course the vocals, it all gells so well together & so much of this song resonates with me.

The Artist: UB40
The Song: (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You
Released: 1993

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Another UB40 song here, this time a cover of Elvis Presley's classic. It hit #1 on both the UK and US Chart and it's easy to see why because this song is a hit. UB40 were a very popular band in my household growing up partially because of the Reggae sound, and also because they managed to make most of their songs despite lyrical content uplifting. You could sing along, lose yourself in their songs and the videos for the 80's and 90's were quite something to watch.

The Artist: East 17
The Song: It's Alright
Released: 1993

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Another band popular in my household as a kid, East 17 hit #1 in various parts of Europe & Australia for 7 weeks in a row. This was one of the first songs I heard that crossed genre, starting off as a ballad and transcending into a dance smash. East 17 made a lot of songs that I love but this stuck with me as lyrically I find it calming, whilst the chorus I can't stop dancing to. I love the guitar in the chorus and it's one of those songs that I do think has shaped the way music is today.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

When the song first started I wasn't sure where exactly it was going, and then the chorus hit. Oh what a belter of a chorus it is. The overall tone of the song reminds me somewhat of 70's rock which I like in spades. The guitar riff is absolutely gorgeous though the drum doesn't exactly blow me away, lyrically it's ok and it's definitely a song you can bounce your head to. Grouplove are an American Indie/Rock band & the album's out now.

A lady who should not require introduction, and I'm proud to boast 'I Turn To You' and 'Things Will Never Be The Same Again' amongst my favourite songs, Melanie C is back with a new song. Sometimes when Artists come back from a break their music unfortunately sounds a little dated. I'm pleased she doesn't have that problem here. Again lyrically this isn't exactly blowing my mind, but the music is on point. I like the subtle build up to the chorus which just comes out at you. You can pre-order Melanie C's 7th album 'Version Of Me' due for release on October 21st.

First thing; I am not a fan of any song that has an overly long introduction. It very quickly loses my attention which can be a shame when the song seems to be good. Here I ended up fast forwarding a minute and as I thought, the song is indeed great. Music video I don't really think much of but I love the music breakdown in between the verses & chorus. Lyrically the songs ok but again, not really grabbing my attention and I'm liking the 70's funk here. Cherry Glazerr are an American band who you should most definitely keep an eye on.

I love The Naked And Famous. They have such a unique sound that I have missed these past 3 years and I really need October to get here faster, because it's shaping up to be a great month for music. What I love about this song especially is it doesn't follow the routine of intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-end. Instead the second you press play this song is coming at you & even then doesn't follow a set beat. I love the music break, lyrically this is sound and the lyric video is beautiful to look at.

Finishing up this week is this beauty from Elena Goodard. Everything about this song is perfect. The music, the lyrics, music video and the under beats that run through to the chorus. Elena's got everything I love in a song here and it's again why I'm so grateful to be part of CONTROLRadioUK, because without this site and these picks, I would've never had reason to come across this song. Elena Goodard is an Indie Singer/Songwriter from Canada.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Songs Of 92

Hello and welcome to the next Chapter in our Throwback Thursday series. We've travelled through 80's Pop/Rock/RnB/Reggae/Dance. Now we're having a stop-over in the 90's. It was a glorious 10 years for fashion, technology & of course music. Some songs changed the landscape of music forever whilst some were unfortunate one-hit wonders. For the next 8 weeks we'll be bringing you 5 great songs & you can drop us a few of your favorites in the comment below.

The Artist: House Of Pain
The Song: Jump Around
Released: 1992

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Who doesn't know this song? It reached #8 on the UK Charts, #3 on Billboard and was certified Gold in the UK & used in various moves and TV shows over the years. The song samples a wide range of music, most notably the squealing tenor saxophone at the beginning of almost every bar. It's regarded as being a club classic and as soon as the song starts, you jump!

The Artist: CeCe Peniston
The Song: We Got A Love Thang
Released: 1992

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This song reached #6 in the UK and #20. It probably isn't as recognisable as other songs from 1992, but I absolutely love it. The song is so funky and feel good which the music video emphasizes.

The Artist: 4 Non Blondes
The Song: Dear Mr. President
Released: 1992

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Like Ace Of Base & Steps, the 4 Non Blondes are a group you're going to see dominate our 90's journey. 4 Non Blondes were finding it hard to get airplay in places & the song was written in protest of the hierarchy of power and Government. Again, the video does a great job of emphasizing that message and I also love the guitars and drums at the end of the song.

The Artist: Snap!
The Song: Rhythm Is A Dancer
Released: 1992

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This reached #1 on the UK Chart and #5 on Billboard. It is not hard to see why. If you had a party at school during the 90's, it was a guarantee that this song was played. Continuing on from the late 80's, the early 90's was very much known for its Synth Pop and Disco Beats. I'm not a massive fan of the rap in the middle, but the music's strong enough for it to not ruin the song so I'll let it slide.

The Artist: En Vogue
The Song: My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get it)
Released: 1992

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This song reached #4 on the UK Chart and #2 on Billboard. Another trend of the 90's? Songs that had strong implyment of adult/extra curriculum nature, that innocent ears didn't realize the true nature of until years later (another example of this is 'Don't Marry Her have Me' which I will be featuring here). The song went Gold which isn't surprising because of the soulful music & the fact the chorus is very catchy. It's also got a nice 60's sample in it and I love the breakdown at the end.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

I absoutely adore this song. It's been on my playlist since it was released because it is such a jam & really good for work-outs. I love this lyric video even more because Tomas Lemarquis is magnificent. The lyrics cover a wide range of emotions, some of which are quite dark & he absolutely nails it. He's vulnerable, he's scary, he's bouncing along like the rest of us to the beat. If you haven't given the album a listen I strongly recommend you do because it's great. Of Monsters And Men are an Indie-Folk band from Iceland.

You may have heard of an annoying infectious song 'Call Me Maybe'. I hated it, preferring 'Tonight I'm getting Over You' but a lot of people really liked it. Since its release, Carly's gone somewhat under the radar which is surprising considering she has quite the tunes in her discography. 'Boy Problems' here is undoubtedly one of them. Both the song and the music video wreak of 80's and it's wonderful, as the song is so chill. The lyrics are a little basic for my taste, but that shouldn't take away from how excellent the song is overall. Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian Singer/Songwriter/Actor and if you haven't given the album a play, you're missing out on a treat.

Here we have another fantastic song which should be familiar to you, since The Ellipsis are a band we play on CONTROLRadioUK & 'Cold Cactus' is currently sitting pretty in our chart. I'm not a massive fan of concert/behind the scene music videos, but I'll make an exception here. This song's on point lyrically & musically with a wonderful guitar & drum beat that runs throughout. The Ellipsis are an English band you might not have heard of, but that doesn't make them or this song any less awesome.

Another week, another Tegan and Sara song. Basically finally giving them a listen after years of only ever hearing about them is one of my wisest music related choices this year & I must pass this on. Oh and this video has a wonderful dance routine, along with being in the forest which gets a plus for scenery. Oh and the songs fantastic both musically & lyrically. Have I mentioned yet that you should give them a listen?!

To end this week a song I'm not overly crazy about, but was outvoted on so here we are. I'm probably being a little harsh on this song since there isn't much wrong with it; got a nice beat and you can dance along to it. For me though, it doesn't go anywhere, I don't really like the mix-up of genre's and I've heard better. I guess after a summer of EDM and so-called club hits I am a little jaded. Others here at CONTROLRadioUK though think it's lovely, dancing along to that great beat & getting lost in the music. Zedd is a Record Producer/DJ/Producer from Germany you probably have heard of. Now, let me go back off to my cave and see the rest of the week out jamming to 90's music & ranting about what the kids are up to these days.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Songs Of The 90's

Hello and welcome to the next Chapter in our Throwback Thursday series. We've traveled through 80's Pop/Rock/RnB/Reggae/Dance. Now we're having a stop-over in the 90's. It was a glorious 10 years for fashion, technology & of course music. Some songs changed the landscape of music forever whilst some were unfortunate one-hit wonders. For the next 9 weeks we'll be bringing you 5 great songs & you can drop us a few of your favorites in the comment box.

The Artist: Roxette
The Song: It Must Have Been Love
Released: 1990

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Part of the Pretty Woman soundtrack this song is an absolute classic. It hit #1 on the US Billboard chart and #3 on the UK Top 75, staying there for 14 weeks. Even if you don't know the band or the film, you will know this song. For a break-up song, it's quite beautiful and I love the music.

The Artist: Erasure
The Song: Love To Hate You
Released: 1991

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Ahh Erasure. They were a massive band of the late 80's/90's and are still around to this day. They reached #4 on the UK Charts with this belter, #19 on the German Charts & ~4 in Sweden. It's a favourite song of CONTROLRadioUK, infectiously catchy & I aboslutely love the music. For a 90's song the video's aged quite well.

The Artist: R.E.M
The Song: Shiny Happy People
Released: 1991

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Most people know R.E.M for 'Everybody Hurts' but the song I grew up with on the radio was this. It reached #6 on the UK Charts & #10 on the US Billboard. I know a lot of people don't like it, but for me it's such a fun, catchy song that I can't help but like.

The Artist: Kylie Minogue
The Song: What Do I Have To Do
Released: 1991

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
The first of 2 entries here from the Minogue sisters & without a doubt my favourite Kylie Minogue song. It reached #6 on the UK charts & like Erasure, it's infectiously catchy (the chrous has been stuck in my head for like 15yrs) & I love the music. Synth Pop seemed to shine through 90's music which I loved, and I'm glad it's still used frequently today.

The Artist: Danni Minogue
The Song: Jump To The Beat
Released: 1991

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
I've heard this version of the song a lot other the years & had no idea Danni was behind it. It reached #8 on the UK Charts and failed to perfom well which is a shame because the songs great. Both Kylie & Danni are great musicians with quite the belters under their names & Danni was the best judge the UK X Factor ever had, so it's a shame people don't really recognise that.
