CONTROLRadioUK 2016 Videos Of The Year

For our final article of 2016, the 3 videos that've stood out to us at CONTROLRadioUK HQ this year. This was very hard to decide as we have watched so many, but these really stood out to us be it for storytelling, scenery or just because it's hilarious. Happy New Year Everyone!

CONTROLRadiouk 2016 Albums Of The Year

I've probably mentioned once or twice I've listened to a lot of music this year. Well what better way to bring in 2017 than reviewing my Albums of 2016, which admittedly not as long a list as I'd like.

Little Mix – Glory Days

Hey, hey! A rare moment for me to talk about how much I like Little Mix & Glory Days is my favorite album from them so far

I’ve spoke before in various articles on the fact Little Mix are a band I have come to like; originally they very much were not my cup of tea. I liked the odd song from Salute but it wasn’t enough for me to buy the album, until somewhere along the line I fell into them in the build-up to Get Weird and I haven’t looked back.

It’s extremely rare for me to come across an album from an Artist/band and like every track but that is what I get with Little Mix. That’s not to say I think every song is perfect because they’re not; ‘You Gotta Not’ has a great beat running throughout the song and a good enough chorus to distract from the repetitive, basic verging on childlike rhyming pattern that plagues the verses. I don’t know who came up with ‘Blue’s Clues’, ‘Bluetooth’, ‘Whitey-tighties’ and my favorite ‘show off your muffin top’, but I hope I never hear any song they’ve had a hand in writing again. The same goes for ‘Power’ which is plagued by repetitive, simplistic lyrics everywhere you turn, but it’s again saved by good music just about making me look the other way. ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ whilst being a smash doesn’t exactly warm my heart due to the very obvious musical comparisons to another well known song, but then I could say that about most music I listen to. My musical wish for 2017? Less samples and more original music composition.

That’s the somewhat ‘bad’ of the album out the way because as I say, though I may have my issues, I can still listen to every track and be fine with it. My stand-out track from the album would have to be ‘Private Show’ though. I’ve played the album over a dozen times since I purchased and every time, I discover something new that I like about the song. Be it that smash of a chorus, or the break build-ups, it’s just perfect for my ears to listen to. Another pleaser is ‘No More Sad Songs’ which is a nice little dance number right after two back to back ballads. ‘Freak’ and ‘F.U’ tie in third for my favorites off the album. ‘Freak’ deserves better than to be a bonus track & I will be extremely sad that it probably won’t be chosen as a single because it is a fantastic song. The lyrics are Little Mix at their sassy best with a slightly more grown-up mature sound that I love. ‘F.U’ is another ballad this time covering the bitter part of a break-up, and it’s so good I will even forgive the end of the chorus which again treads into basic, childlike territory.

'Oops
’ is a nice little number and Charlie Puth’s vocals gel quite well with Little Mix but the song isn’t memorable in any way. ‘Touch’ is a song I’m glad was chosen to be a single because it has quite a fun, summery dance sound to it and the chorus is memorable but musically it’s not strong enough to be a stand-out for me. ‘Your Love’ has some nice enough beats but is quite a forgettable track in terms of the albums overall quality. ‘Nobody Like You’ I’d say is my favorite ballad off the album simply for the emotion it packs in. ‘Nothing Else Matters’ is a nice enough song that reminds me of something from the late 80’s early 90’s and ‘Beep Beep’ is a song that would be amongst my favorites if not for the censoring. It feels like attempts at repeating the success of ‘Hair’ on Get Weird, but doesn’t take into equation that worked because it was so subtle. Here the censored words are rather blatant & idiotic to me. If you can’t swear on a song because of the market you’re in, or it doesn’t suit the tone of your music, then just don’t swear.

Album rating: 8/10

Foxes – All I Need

One of the more under-rated Artists of 2016 but still with an album that packs quite a punch landing at #12 on the UK Chart is Foxes.

I’ll admit that I’m still very new to Foxes music. I have previously heard and loved some of her songs, but not enough to purchase the album. Then of course I had one listen of ‘Better Love’ and ‘Cruel’ and realized I very much needed this in my life.

The only critic I can give of the album is that like some other Artists/bands out there, some of the songs blend into themselves & are a little on the repetitive side. I’ve also seen a trend in my collection this year of albums with songs that aren’t actually full songs, or anything at all really aside from a bit of noise ranging from between 30 seconds and going all the way up to just past a minute! I am not a fan of anyone who does this as it is a rip-off; you pay decent enough money for albums you should be getting an album of full tracks not half-baked.

As mentioned ‘Better Love’ is what got me into buying this album, along with reminding me that Foxes does indeed still make music, and of course this would be my favorite song from the album when it’s done with Dan from Bastille who is on the chorus backing vocals. It’s a belter of a song that will probably resonate with a lot of people. ‘Body Talk’ is a fine little number of which I love the chorus that packs quite the punch. ‘Cruel’ along with ‘Better Love’ persuaded me to buy the album, though it isn’t quite as powerful musically & lyrically lacks as well.

‘If You Leave Me Now’
is one of the albums more blended tracks that doesn’t have as much power in the chorus to really make me take notice. May of course be a deliberate move since it is one of the more emotional ballad type songs, and it is nice to listen to; but that’s about it. ‘Amazing’ is quite a fun number musically & lyrically, and amongst my favorite tracks of the album. Joining it is ’Devil Side’ which verges into blended territory, but is saved by lyrics that have depth to them and music that soars enough for me to be able to point the track out in a crowd.

‘Feet Don’t Fail Me Now’ is another which is amongst my favorites because it is so on point musically and lyrically, even if the title reminds me of Lana Del Rey’s hit ‘Born To Die’. ‘Wicked Love’ is unfortunately well and truly in the blended category & a completely forgettable song if you’re not binge listening this album (which I was cause I like my Christmas gifts) 'Scar' is an absolute masterpiece from beginning to end, sounding quite similar in places to Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’. The simple piano string which breaks out into the chorus works well here in not overpowering the story of the song. ‘Money’ is a nice little funky up-tempo number which helps with those mid-album blues.

‘On My Way’ is another decent track but at this point in the album I’d heard a little too many ballads for my liking and was getting a bit bored. ‘Shoot Me Down’ helped to wake me up and is a very nice pop number I wish wasn’t so deep into the album. The same goes for ‘Lose My Cool’ and the albums title track which takes us into ‘Rise Up (Reprise). All in all it’s a nice little album that will probably grow in time, but I really could’ve done without so many ballads, especially placed so close together.

Album Rating: 6/10

Two Door Cinema Club - Gameshow

Ahh Two Door Cinema Club. How it was totally worth waiting for Christmas to listen to this beauty. They fall into an extremely rare category of actually making me like remixes that are included on the bonus disk.

To fly through this I think every song is great with no issues. My stand out tracks are ‘Game Show’, ‘Je Viens De La’ and ‘Fever’, but there’s no point doing an individual track rating here because my love for Two Door Cinema Club is quite well known, and I don’t have anything to say apart from many adjectives to use in replacing the word great.

Bastille – Wild World

An album I’ve previous covered in my reviews so I’m simply going to give this a 10/10, and confirm that months late ‘Blame’ and ‘An Act of Kindness’ are still my favorites.

The Naked And Famous – Simple Forms

The only complaint I can have for The Naked And Famous is being forced to wait so long for another album, and it only having 10 tracks. They’ve been one of my favorite bands since before I started listening to OneRepublic and Bastille, and shall be my favorite for a long time to come.

Every song on the album is as brilliant and anthemic as the next. ‘Higher’ is the lead and to this day still gets me out of my seat jumping up & down because it is so damn fun. What I like most about The Naked And Famous is they combine deep lyrics with great music which takes the edge off, but without losing the point of the song. ‘The Water Beneath You’ is a perfect example of this and a future club track in the making.

‘My Energy’ is slightly less high octane and a bit more on the rock side which I again love. ‘Last Forever’ is currently my favorite track after ‘Higher’ but by my next listen that will probably have changed. ‘Losing Our Control’ is on the softer side and fits in perfectly as we pass the middle of the album and go towards the end. ‘Backslide’ fits in nicely with its neighbor and is another of my favorites with that beautiful guitar riff.

‘Laid Low’ was available as a pre-release and a nice enough track, but dare I say the only bad track on the album. ‘The Runners' is another beautiful number as we’re well and truly on the road to the end, and makes me sad for this very reason. ‘Falling' is a sleeping monster that leads into the sublime ‘Rotten’ which I can confirm is the complete opposite of the tracks name.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents 2016 Artist Of The Year Part 5: Meg Myers

Hello and welcome to another CONTROLRadioUK Special where all week I'm celebrating the best of the new Artists I've heard this year. This isn't necessarily Artists that broke out in 2016, but the first time I came across their music thanks to the wonderful work that we do here. It was extremely hard to narrow down the choices because I have listened to so much great music this yes, but we managed it! Every day this week I'm going to be bringing you a fresh article looking at one Artist/Band in particular, with focus on the music videos that grabbed me & their best overall videos.

So we've reached the end & how could I finish this week off on anyone but Meg Myers? From the moment I pressed the play button on this song I was a fan. Then from the moment I looked at some of her other songs online, I was buying the album. Fast forward a bit of time & it's been a main stayer on my laptop & phone, becoming a rare album to not have a bad track on it. That's quite a feat to achieve because even with how much I've grown to love Bastille & always loved OneRepublic, I find some of their songs boring. I absolutely love this video because Meg is a rare singer who can emote. Many Artists/Bands come out with powerful music videos for their song that make us feel the story of the song, but you don't get it from them. Similar example is when you're watch TV Shows/Movies with a character having a very dramatic & emotional story line. Sometimes you connect a bit more with the emotion in the dialogue that's been given to them than you do with the Actor/Actresses performance. From the stuff I've watched there's an extremely small list of Actors/Actresses who can truly make you feel like what they're saying is coming from their heart, and not the papers they've spent the last week rehearsing over & over again to get just right. To get that from a singer is extremely difficult, so when I find it, you bet I'm gonna enjoy it.

This song is from quite a few years ago and featured on one of my favorite TV Shows Banshee (we never speak of the last season) which at the time didn't register to me at all. I sincerely apologize for that & also advise checking out the Banshee soundtrack because it is superb.

To finish this week off I give you a song that is probably my favorite off the album, though if you ask me again next week I'll have changed my mind because it's THAT good. I can't really say anything about Meg's music or her videos that I haven't already said. 2016 has been an appalling year in many senses, some of which I have personally felt, but in other ways (albeit smaller) it has also been a good year. It brought me here to CONTROLRadioUK & I am always thankful & surprised by the amount of people who read the articles I do my upmost to bring you every week. I've listened to some truly fantastic music this year & on New Years Eve you can enjoy my review of every album I've listened to this year (surprisingly not a long list so that's on the 2017 revolution board!) There are a number of reasons to feel pessimistic about 2017 but there are also a number of reasons to feel really excited, like albums that are coming out & more fantastic Artists/Bands to unearth!

CONTROLRadioUK Presents 2016 Artist Of The Year Part 4: Tegan and Sara

Hello and welcome to another CONTROLRadioUK Special where all week I'm celebrating the best of the new Artists I've heard this year. This isn't necessarily Artists that broke out in 2016, but the first time I came across their music thanks to the wonderful work that we do here. It was extremely hard to narrow down the choices because I have listened to so much great music this yes, but we managed it! Every day this week I'm going to be bringing you a fresh article looking at one Artist/Band in particular, with focus on the music videos that grabbed me & their best overall videos.

I've mentioned it previously a number of times but for those new, I've known about Tegan And Sara for years. Quite a few people I've come across have been big fans of them & their music, encouraging me to give them a listen but I always refused. As with Bastille, I don't like when music is overplayed or people try to force me onto something that they like. It's extremely off-putting & if anything makes me turn off the Artist even more. This year though, with my work here requiring me to select 5 songs every week from Artists/Bands you may have heard of but the emphasis is on those that aren't as well known, I had to expand my musical library. Yes I am allowed to occasionally bring you songs from OneRepublic & Bastille, but that's only occasionally & even then requires a lot of bargaining. So I have to search around the net & listen to some truly awful music until I come across gems like Tegan & Sara. After that you're never getting rid of me. Do I feel annoyed it took me so long to get into them? Yes, but at the same time it makes me appreciate their music that bit more. Their music has such a lovely chilled, 80's synth vibe to it that I can't help liking it & 'Stop Desire' was the first step in that musical journey.

Since I came across Tegan And Sara's music they've been a regular feature on the picks which I make no apologies for; their music is superb. But a true test of whether you like an Artist/Band is when you explore their discography, and in Tegan And Sara's case the rest of the album. It's ok to not feel 1 or 2 tracks as long as you like the other 90% and with Tegan And Sara I can safely say I'm liking that 90%. Even if their music videos don't always grab me, their music tends to have a story to them lyrically which I like in Artists/Bands especially when I'm just starting to get into them. You can save the basic rhyming courtet for the next album when we're on good enough terms for me to look past it. I don't know what it is exactly I love about this song. It's kind of a ballad with a bit of power in the chorus that really draws you in, along with the story of the song obviously. It's still got that 80's synth vibe that I'm really feeling from several Artists/Bands as it happens, but there's enough about this to make it stand out as an original, instead of blending in & becoming forgettable.

Which is where we get & finish off today's special with this beauty. First playing this after listening to the two above, I was afraid we were going into that repetitive territory. An Artist/Band has a particular sound they like which they stick to, but how do they continue making that sound fresh? Whatever the answer is to that Tegan And Sara do that here, and 'White Knuckles' has fast become my favorite song by them. It's a lot softer than the two above, but still brings the same punch. I can really feel the song lyrically which I do always love, even if I did want a bit more from this. Like it's good enough for me to enjoy & feel it, but I'm really not a fan of Artists/Bands who have half a song basically repeating the bridge & chorus over & over again. Yes dressing it up with other instruments to make it sound different works as a great distraction, but I find it a bit lazy. Considering this is the first time I've given their music a listen & I do in general like it, I won't be too harsh!

CONTROLRadioUK Presents 2016 Artist Of The Year Part 3: Allie X

Hello and welcome to another CONTROLRadioUK Special where all week I'm celebrating the best of the new Artists I've heard this year. This isn't necessarily Artists that broke out in 2016, but the first time I came across their music thanks to the wonderful work that we do here. It was extremely hard to narrow down the choices because I have listened to so much great music this yes, but we managed it! Every day this week I'm going to be bringing you a fresh article looking at one Artist/Band in particular, with focus on the music videos that grabbed me & their best overall videos.

At the halfway point here & how can I not talk about this Queen? I first came across her with 'Too Much To Dream'. I know a fantastic Artist/Band when I see them & since then I have stuck around and been treated to some criminally under-rated bops. If you take a quick peek at the word perfect in your musical dictionary? This song will be the definition. It is honestly that fantastic the only thing I hate is when it ends, but then it just starts again because yes! I will listen to this on repeat for days & not get bored. How can you with something so great? It's absolutely sound musically & the lyrics don't let it down either.

SERIOUSLY. It is extremely difficult for Artists/Bands to follow up perfection with something just as spectacular & yet Allie easily accomplishes that here, which only serves to reinforce my dismay that she is so under-rated. Just like my dearly beloved 'Merry Christmas Everybody', this song just gets me & just like 'All the Rage' it is an excellent song to have on the work-out playlist. It's also really important to make sure the music doesn't over power the story of the song & that can be quite a hard balance to find, yet it's done here so easily. The music's nice and easy during the verses, driving up slightly in the bridge to then take us to the chorus where we have a little bit more bass, & then back down into the verses. It's such a sweet transition you can't hear it & I love when music is done so well.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents 2016 Artist Of The Year Part 2: Grouplove

Hello and welcome to another CONTROLRadioUK Special where all week I'm celebrating the best of the new Artists I've heard this year. This isn't necessarily Artists that broke out in 2016, but the first time I came across their music thanks to the wonderful work that we do here. It was extremely hard to narrow down the choices because I have listened to so much great music this yes, but we managed it! Every day this week I'm going to be bringing you a fresh article looking at one Artist/Band in particular, with focus on the music videos that grabbed me & they're best overall videos.

I absolutely love Grouplove. Their music is a rarity for me; catch as heck, fantastic beat, lyrically sound & makes me dance my lovely little socks off. One downside is I'm not always a fan of the music videos they have, which is why I've chosen the audio video here instead. I may really like a song but when your video doesn't grab me, it risks ruining the song for me.

One of my favorites from Grouplove & again I've chosen the audio video because I really do not like the video. Yes it does kind of speak to the song lyrically, but I am just not a fan and like with 'Cannonball' above, I love this song way too much to let it be ruined by a bad video. Like above this is catchy as heck, lyrically sound & has a thunderous chorus I just can't help but dance along to which is how I generally feel about Grouplove. As I've said in picks before, sometimes I like songs that make me think & sometimes I just like fun which Grouplove bring me in bundles & I am very excited to see what the future brings.

Finishing off here with an actual video. I know! How rad. Honestly though I have praised Grouplove for using other creative works for their videos, because some of them are pretty cool, but sometimes I just need a good old fashioned official video. It doesn't have a story to it or anything really going for it, but I'm too busy dancing away to focus on that. I really do enjoy & am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to work here at CONTROLRadioUK because it has introduced me to some magnificent Artists/Bands & made me expand on my musical collection. Instead of seeing a video online & just ignoring it because the thumbnail doesn't look interesting, I'm watching. Yes! Sometimes I do regret that decision but 80% of the time I'm glad I'm giving it a try & also not giving up on an Artist/Band because one song is bad as I'm discovering some real gems.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents 2016 Artist Of The Year Part 1: Hayley Kiyoko

Hello and welcome to another CONTROLRadioUK Special where all week I'm celebrating the best of the new Artists I've heard this year. This isn't neccesarily Artists that broke out in 2016, but the first time I came across their music thanks to the wonderful work that we do here. It was extremely hard to narrow down the choices because I have listened to so much great music this yes, but we managed it! Every day this week I'm going to be bringing you a fresh article looking at one Artist/Band in particular, with focus on the music videos that grabbed me & they're best overall videos. So let's get cracking!

I've spoken a lot this year about how much I like Hayley Kiyoko's music. I first came across her through one of the videos featured below and since then I have been hooked. I like the fact all her music has something different to offer; one song can be a ballad, the next an up-tempo pop song. I like the fact her lyrics have meaning instead of being about the next rhyming couplet, and I love how much effort she puts into her music videos. She's dedicated to her craft, vocal on social issues, her music has helped a lot of people, who have in turn come together as a collective because of her music. I chose this song & video for a few years; the beat at the beginning of the song immediately had you hooked, I love the overall music & story of the lyrics, the video has a really interesting story to it & I love water just as much as I love scenery.

This was the song & video that first got me into Hayley's music & I have previously spoken about it on one of our first music picks. Again just like 'Cliffs Edge' from the first beat I'm hooked. Yes the song does to an extent lyrically cave to the rhyming couplet, but even then it's actually interesting & the rhyming words make sense. The song's got a great message to it which is excellently represented in the video (which is how I originally came across Hayley). We live in an age of time where the media likes to play on a certain death trope, so it's great to see a video have such a positive message & equally positive ending (unlike another I watched recently which completely ruined the song for me). Another thing I should mention about Hayley? She's very much involved with her videos, directing quite a few of them.

Another song I've covered in my picks so I won't rewrite an essay here. But the basics of it are when I originally heard this song I wasn't sure I would like it & overtime I've ended up loving it. Once again I like the story behind the lyrics & video, because in one way or another a lot of people can relate to it. I also really like the end where it inter cuts between her dancing on the table & the burning pictures of the girls.

Again I've covered this before but in a strange way I think this is my favourite video of Hayley's. It's got a story where the first time I watched I was quite nervous wondering where it was going, and I like when music videos do that to me. Yes they're here to persuade you to purchase a song, but they're also here (or should be) to educate & make us think. Horrible events do occur because that is life, but it also has a really positive ending which is again sending a good message.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so heck out our picks below.

Happy Boxing Day everyone and welcome to our last 5 Picks of 2016 (I know this year's gone by way too fast) This is another beauty I found courtesy of watching the TV for an hour on a Wednesday night (that's right people! You can still learn stuff from TV) & I featured another track by Bishop Briggs a little while ago called 'Wild Horses' and do remember saying at the time I was intrigued to hear more from her. Well it's as if Santa was listening & decided to give me an early Xmas present (Yes I'm aware it's Boxing Day but I came across this 2 weeks ago) I will admit the video doesn't do much for me (In fact it doesn't do anything & I prefer playing this without watching) but this song is fantastic. It's another of my favourite slow burners, because you don't always need a song to attack you from the off. No! Sometimes you need it to grow gradually & hit you ever so perfectly in the chorus which this does ever so perfectly. I've now had the chance to go through Bishop Brigg's songs and they are indeed great ('Dead Man's Arm', 'Be Your Love' are my favourites along with this. Her debut EP 'Bishop Briggs' was released at the end of last month & I strongly advise a listen.

These guys only just missed out on my 'New Artists Of The Year' feature (which you can read all this week covering 5 different Artists each day) by the count of the fact I could only choose 5. I stumbled upon 'Cry Baby' a little while back & it is not something i've regretted. Fickle Friends music has a really nice 80's funk music vibe about it which I think is matched by the retro style of their videos. I'd apologise for sleeping on yet another song, but it's honestly been a great 'welcome back to 60% good health present'. So yes I knew this song was featuring here after seeing it on TV, whilst others at CONTROLRadioUK HQ are here for the 80's beat & dancing. I'd again advise a listen through back catalogue because they do make some pretty sweet music. For a quick remind Fickle Friends are an Indie/Pop group from Brighton.

Ok so there was big debate at CONTROLRadioUK HQ over whether to feature this song. I was massively outvoted over the fact everyone except me thinks this song is boring, which I think is extremely harsh. I'm featuring it here because I think the lyrics & story of the video resonate with a lot of people. Yes it is great to have videos with a happy LGBT ending & I will always do my best to find & praise them. Occasionally though you need that heartache because that's the way life is regardless of your preferences; you will fall for someone & for whatever reason it won't work out. You'll be devastated, feel as though the world's ended & be eating ice cream by the bucket load for a month at minimum. Eventually that hurt will ease, you'll realise why it didn't work & you'll move on to happiness. This song & video only covers part of that but it is still an important part. I've said it before but it does bear repeating here; sometimes the best way to do a song is just to let the lyrics speak for themselves. Yes having 500 instruments, backing choir & vocals to knock out the park can sometimes be effective, but sometimes it can over-power the songs message. So yes! I will enjoy this song. Dodie's debut EP 'Intertwined' is available now.

This is another song the rest of CONTROLRadioUK HQ don't get & one I've been waiting to feature for the last 2 weeks so dang flabbit! I'm having my moment. I've previously commented on the fact The Last Shadow Puppets aren't my usual type of music, so I'm very surprised that I'm actually digging them. Yes it helps when the videos are so fun but you also need great music & lyrics to back that up which they do. This has got a psychedelic edge to it which I like as well. I'm not a full on converter, but I probably won't be turning the channel over anytime soon when one of their songs play, which I consider progress.

Some songs you come across & you just click with them even if you don't understand why. This is how I've felt about this song ever since I came across it on Wednesday. The rest of CONTROLRadioUK HQ agrees that this song is ok, but it isn't as strong as some would like. It's absolutely perfect for me since it's light-hearted with a video to match. Like seriously a video set in a bed with a cover over should not work, but it does. I to have had the various occasions of travelling through my bed & coming across different objects that'd been presumed lost forever. Clean Cut Kid are a band from Liverpool & I'm very intrigued to hear more from them.

CONTROLRadioUK Christmas Special

A few reasons why I like this time of year; you get to eat as much junk as you like with the argument you're just in the holiday spirit, there's the possibility of snow & who doesn't love snow, cool presents and of course Christmas songs. They're what get you into the Holiday spirit, erasing your Halloween blues & make you feel so happy to get the Christmas tree out and welcome another year. Now there's only one Christmas song that I really love. It's just one that gets me. It has indeed made these picks, as have quite a few others that are popular (although why you need any other song is beyond me).

The Artist: Aled Jones
The Song: Walking In The Air

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
I know there's an official video for this song but come on! Everyone knows this song from 'The Snowman' movie. Every time December came round at school this movie would be dragged out of the vault, to continually amuse us easy going 90's kids (That's right! We didn't need fancy technology just a movie about a snowman). Over the years I have grown to like the various alternative versions of this song just like 'Jingle Bells' because they're extremely amusing, and if you can't turn classic songs into filth then what is the point in the Holidays?

The Artist: The Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl
The Song: Fairytales of New York

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
I think it's pretty much illegal to celebrate Christmas without either coming across this song, or singing along with all your belt even if you have no idea what you're singing. It's a weird song to be a Christmas classic. The lyrics aren't exactly full of festive cheer with a bit of an insulting back & forth going on until the conclusion. The video's quite depressing. Yet we all love it. Magic of the holidays!

The Artist: Bing Crosby
The Song: It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This song is I guess one of the more heartwarming Christmas songs? It's definitely lyrically & musically one of the most Christmas themed songs I'm featuring here. One of those you know all the words to even if you don't actually like the song, because you've heard it way too many times & makes you feel all soft inside even if you won't admit it as you have to act all cool like you don't care. Oh, just me?

The Artist: Andy Williams
The Song: It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Stepping off my Grinch podium I'll admit I do actually like this song. It's upbeat, festive and does actually get me in the Christmas mood. I will sing and dance along to this song & enjoy it because how can you not? It's also what I'd say is more of a well known Christmas classic than some other picks here that you could say are just well known because of how overplayed they are (Seriously Christmas has been going on for how long & you still gotta play the top 50 from 130 years ago every year). So yes, this gets my thumbs up.

The Artist: Slade
The Song: Merry Christmas Everybody

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This is it. The holy grail of Christmas songs. The one that should basically be it and ride all other Christmas songs into extinction. I have loved this song since the first moment I heard it & it has been my song ever since. It's one that just gets me. There are several different videos to go with this song but this is the best one to me & also the version I think is always played on the music channels. Slade aren't taking themselves seriously. Everyone's dancing & singing along and of course the drummer goes a bit off key at the end cause why not?? I love this song just as much lyrically as I do musically because yes! I know it's Christmas so no-one's really focussing & I shouldn't be that deep, but these lyrics do actually have a good story to them.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so heck out our picks below.

I have been a bit critical of Tom. I like the guy but some of his songs are a bit hit & miss, and whilst 'Here I Am' is a good song it didn't exactly blow me away. So you can only imagine how happy I was when I checked my notifications & saw this video pop up. I will apologise for somewhat sleeping on this song & quite a few others in the picks over the next 2 weeks, but in my defence I have had a flu + chest infection along with a pretty busy schedule at College. I don't know what I like most about this song; the lyrics, way the music goes up in the chorus or the video. Usually one with someone singing in between playing the piano & someone watching their performance would be boring. But they manage to turn that concept into something so beautiful. It's also got a slightly Christmassy feel on the melody back-drop which is perfect. This video isn't quite strong enough to make my videos of the year list (a beauty that you can feast your eyes upon next week along with some other tasty articles0 but it is strong enough to leave mesmerised on every watch. 'The Wrong Crowd' is currently available to buy/stream.

Sometimes you just hear a song & know you're gonna love it. That was me 10 seconds into this song. I love the beats, I love the chorus & I absolutely love the lyrics. It's just so on point & basically the anthem we deserve. Like Tom Odell, this video is so simple & yet so powerful. She's also managed to make a basic rhyming rhythm interesting, but should I really be surprised when Diana Gordon also helped give us the masterpiece 'Sorry' by Beyonce containing the lyric of 2016 'He better call Becky with the good hair' (Probably good to add here that ISN'T my opinion, but one I garnered from basically every media outlet in existence hunting for the so-called Becky & the Internet meltdown which ensued). Diana wrote a piece on how exactly this song & video came to be which is easily available via a quick Internet search, and something I strongly advise reading as it just adds to how good this song + video is. Unfortunately this is where my information on Diana Gordon begins & ends, but i can only hope she gives us more music as great as this.

As soon as I saw this video on TV I knew my good people at CONTROLRadioUK HQ were going to love this and what do you know? This inspired one heck of a dance party (One that is currently going on behind me because our office has extremely thin walls & people would rather dance than help me write this stuff). The video isn't really much and indeed one part always has me wondering if my TV/PC on the outs, and I'm not listening to this song for a lyrical masterclass (I know!Shocking). This song is fun, the video is fun, the music is fun & you know what? Sometimes that's just what we need. Tkay Maidza is an Australian rapper/singer who was born in Zimbabwe, and her debut album TKAY is currently available to download/buy in Australia/America whilst it comes out in Europe on 20th January 2017.

Don't you love it when a band you like releases a song from their album which you absolutely love? It's so much better than having to pretend to like a single, whilst judging their managements taste in not releasing the actual goods. I haven't come across a person who likes 'Wild World' and doesn't have 'Blame' in their top 5 songs simply because it's impossible. But let's break it down here. First, appreciate the visuals Bastille give us but don't ever try to understand the message of the song. You will basically be here forever because I've yet to meet a person who has a clear cut explanation of what their videos mean which is even more fun; music is an art & art is supposed to be interpretive. Secondly, I love the guitar riff at the beginning of the song & how the beginning isn't heavy musically at all. It's a natural growth with the vocals & backing vocals which I absolutely love because you're able to feel the power of the song even more. Thirdly, the reason why Bastille are my second favourite band after OneRepublic (and something I think I've mentioned before) is they write for meaning. It's not just random rhyming cuplets put together & hoping for a decent result, which I'll be quick to add isn't a bad thing but again it's all about balance; I like deep songs just as much as I like simple songs, nothing too much, nothing too little. Finally I also happen to adore the guitar riff at the end which leads into the beginning again. Pretty damn neat if you ask me. 'Wild World' is currently available to buy/stream which you of course already know because you already have it.

Fun fact for you; When I first watched this video I thought all the guys in the band were the same person just clothed differently. Even funner fact for you? When I showed this video to the rest of CONTROLRadioUK HQ they had the same reaction & even when I explained there are indeed 5 different guys & pointed out the differences, some still got confused. Beginning to think I should've redeemed that group Specsavers voucher when I had the chance. That aside this song is yet another masterpiece on the picks this week. In fact all the tracks I had listed for consideration were so great no-one wanted to put any track on the reject list. Nope! They're all in the 5 picks spread over this & next week. Back to this song though & it is just fantastic. The lyrics are deep without being overly preachy & the same of Phil Collins 'In The Air Tonight' is used wonderfully. I think I had a theme going this week with simple effective videos & I strongly advise checking out the acoustic of this song which is even more spectacular. MiC Lowry are a 5 peice vocal harmony group from Liverpool & you can buy/stream this song now.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Best of The Noughties

We've travelled through time & began our exploration into the best musical moments, so this week I wanted to take the opportunity to explore the Noughties. The 90's will always be dearly beloved to me but the Noughties is where I hit my musical stride. I had to get over the split of one of my favourite bands & found myself falling in love with rock music for the first time, along with coming across Artists who would turn out to be amongst my favourites going forward. So without any further ado, my favourite songs from the Noughties;

The Artist: Dannii Minogue
The Song: I Begin To Wonder

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Ok I've been pretty vocal on the fact Dannii Minogue & Samantha Fox were extremely popular in my house growing up. There wasn't a day that went by I didn't hear one of their songs, but 'I Begin To Wonder' was the first Dannii Minogue song I actually liked for myself. I wish I could find a higher quality version of this video to feature but I guess you can't have everything. For my little old 90's mind that grew up on terrible futuristic green screen videos, this video was definitely an improvement technology wise. I still love the music of this song to this day, and it's really not bad lyrically either.

The Artist: The Killers
The Song: Somebody Told Me

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This was the first rock song I ever loved, part of the first rock album I ever bought & basically began my transition from pure pop music into pop/rock/indie. Everything about this song is fantastic and 12 years later I still enjoy singing away to this song with all of my vocal strength (which considering my years of Theatre School is actually quite good). Did I like all of the music from The Killers after this? No. 'Sam's Town' actually goes down as one of the biggest disappointments of my musical collection; not to say the album's bad but not my cup of tea.

The Artist: Steps
The Song: Summer Of Love

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Ok by now you should know if I can ever squeeze in an opportunity to talk about Steps, I'm taking that opportunity. Boxing Day 2001 is still very much ingrained in my head. i was a very happy little girl until a phone call came in & all of a sudden the living room went quiet. My mum looked up teletext (that's right! we were still very old school in the early Noughties) and my eyes fell onto the headline that Steps had announced their split. 11 year old me was completely devastated for a good while after that. I wanted to throw out all my Steps stuff but my mum refused to let me, and had to deal with people at school rejoicing the fact they'd split whilst I fought the urge to cry. As you can probably gather, not the greatest time but along with 'Deeper Shade Of Blue' this is one of my favorite songs. Like 'I Begin To Wonder' was the first time I'd come across a decent technologic video, this was the first time I'd come across one which featured doubles of the band. I love the music, I love the lyrics, I love the dance routine even if I could do without my favorite band member being front & center at times (though I won't moan too much because they didn't have a solo on this song thank goodness). I've mentioned before my favorite Steps songs tend to be ones where Claire or H are on lead. This is a rare song of their's which was somewhat ensemble with Claire's power vocals in the chorus & I loved it.

The Artist: Snow Patrol
The Song: Run

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Sometimes you come across a song that just clicks with you & you can't explain why; this is one of those songs. I came across this just after I'd started listening to The Killers & whilst 'Chasing Cars' is the song that made them a worldwide name, this is my favorite from Snow Patrol. So much so I have the instrumental version of this & I honestly can't say which is better. The video doesn't really have a story to it but is beautiful nonetheless, the lyrics are somewhat deep & probably resonate the most with me outside the break beat at the end of the song. That is my all time favorite bit & I curse whenever I come across a version of this song that has that cut because it's so beautiful & the way it leads so gently into the end of the song? No words.

The Artist: Ke$ha
The Song: Tik Tok

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This was a very difficult song for me to choose. I'm a massive fan of Kesha joining others in campaigning to bring attention to her situation, which I do find horrific & disgusting & I'm glad she has so much support. So in that sense putting any song from her back catalogue here is hard, but at the same time this article is choosing my favorite songs from the Noughties. This song was constantly on the radio when it was first released so you'd think it'd become a victim of my dear friend over exposed? Surprisingly not, even when I came across this video at least 5 times a day on the TV, but the song was addictive enough in the beat & lyrics not to annoy me. Yes! When I first heard this on the radio I thought she was black (not the first time that's happened either). The video's just a bowl full of fun & the lyrics aren't deep by any stretch, but they're also not beyond basic in terms of rhyming which is always a plus. Basically I'm a really big fan of Kesha & like many others look forward to the day when she's able to release new music. Until then I'll continue to listen to her old bops, but never forget.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so heck out our picks below.

Hello you sweet wonderful people! Yes it is I, making a brief return from being flu-ridden with a lovely side dish of a chest infection because when I see OneRepublic have a new video out how can I not? I'd say I'm joking but I'm really not; as soon as I got the alert that this video was up & showed it to the good people at CONTROLRadioUK HQ through the wonders of technology, the reaction was 'of course', greeted by what was possibly an eye roll. Fun fact for you? This song though not my favourite off the album is my favourite to work out to & whilst I always prefer actual music videos instead of something put together for a movie soundtrack, it is a new OneRepublic music video! How can I complain too much? Even when it's not my favourite song on the album it is still a fantastic song musically & lyrically because that is OneRepublic & I shall enjoy waxing poetry over them further in my 'Albums of 2016' Article you can enjoy reading next week. Do I need to tell you their album 'Oh My My' is currently out now? Not really because you should already have it.

I think it's possible I might've mentioned how much I love Grouplove before. They're a fun band who give us fun music we can dance the night away to & video's that can be extremely amusing like this one here. What more could you want from a band? Especially when unlike a lot of Artists/Bands who give us 3/4 videos for singles on an album & make us curse their choice of singles, they're partnered with Genero to allow other people to produce videos for their songs. It's pretty freaking neat & I love it. Again I shouldn't need to remind you 'Big Mess' is available to stream/download now since you should already have it, but I'm nothing if not a helpful elf.

I featured Melanie C's previous single 'Anymore' here and we at CONTROLRadioUK HQ are massive fans of hers. She's always made fantastic music & this time she has an equally fantastic video to accompany. I love the message of the song, I love the music & I like how the video's intershot (if you don't know what that means hahahaha! Let me enjoy being the smartest of them all thanks to the endlessly boring miss-en-scene lessons at college). But seriously this time of year is either filled with Christmas songs or ballads. Whilst I'll take Christmas songs any day of the week (or one song in particular which will be a feature of next week's Throwback Thursday article) the ballad's get a bit much; they're extremely depressing, with either a moody black & white video to accompany or just a plain moody video & song that's dark until the end where we get the big choir cause everything's ok again. It's boring, I hate them & will appreciate that this is a nice up-tempo ballad.

If you've never heard the BAMF that is 'Farewell To The Fairground', I don't know what you're doing, but this here is your redemption. I will admit that whilst I like White Lies not all of their music is my thing. Sometimes the lyrics can be a bit problematic, possibly having a deeper meaning I don't agree with & led to the odd track being deleted from my Computer's existence. Other times they give us songs like this beauty * I'm just in love. The video doesn't do anything for me at all, but consider myself feeling the Christmas spirit as a welcome distraction from being ill for the last 3 weeks, and going easy on my critique this week. Which you should enjoy whilst it lasts because I'll soon be back to my critical best, tearing the crap out of stuff that shouldn't exist. I know! Full of joy!

Another on my 'said it before but I'm saying it again' list; Getting into Tegan & Sara's music this year is one of the best musically related choices I've made this year. It's so chill with a bit of 80's funk & an ok video. That's right! I am for once not ripping a new one over videos not having stories to them, truly feeling the Christmas spirit. I like the fact that they, along with other Artists/Bands I'm jamming to, are capable of making fun music with deep lyrics. One of the pains of my collection this year is loving the music of a song which contains such lyrics as 'blues clues', 'bluetook' & 'muffin top' along with another that repeats the word 'motor bike, bike, bike, bike'. I don't know why this is forced onto me since it's generally accepted I am a good person who doesn't deserve to hear such tripe, but I thank Artists like Tegan & Sara for restoring the balance of the universe.
