CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: 80's Rewind - Best Of Pop

Welcome to CONTROLRadioUK's first ever Throwback Thursday Rewind. Every week we're gonna be going back in time to 1 era, 1 genre, 5 songs. What better way to start off our Throwback Thursday Rewind than 80's pop!! So feat your eyes on these bops, and let us know your thoughts in the comment box.

The Artist: Men Without Hats
The Song: Safety Dance
Released: 1983

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: I would constantly hear this, love it and have no idea what on earth it was. Years later I finally discovered it was by Men Without Hats and it's been on my mp3 ever since. The songs just so fun, it's impossible not to dance to it.

The Artist: Samantha Fox
The Song: Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now
Released: 1987

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: It's a lovely summery pop anthem, which was a big hit back in the 80's from PWL. It's also one of the many songs Samantha Fox still plays to around the world.

The Artist: Sinita
The Song: So Macho
Released: 1986

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Like the Samantha Fox one, it's a massive pop summer anthem & a big favourite of the LGBT Community. Fanatastic song, one of Sinita's biggest hits.

The Artist: Madonna
The Song: Into The Groove
Released: 1985

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Taken from the film Desperately Seeking Susan which Madonna also starred in, it's another great pop anthem which was one of Madonna's first big hits in the UK and one everyone remembers.

The Artist: A-Ha
The Song: Take On Me
Released: 1984

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
You can't have a list of 80's pop songs without including Take On Me. It's well known for being amongst the first videos to mix live action & animation together. Whenever you think of A-Ha you think of this song and it's still a classic even today.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

I'm gonna start off this week with two things; First a thank you to the owner of CONTROLRadioUK for creating such an awesome station & an even bigger thank you for allowing me on board this train. My ears have been opened up to some truly amazing artists through doing these picks every week & I love it. This song is beautiful beyond words as is the video, so I'll direct your attention to the praise button instead of trying to lavish with praise. Headhunterz is a Dutch DJ and Music Producer & KSHMR is an Indian/American EDM Producer from California.

Yes you are seeing this correctly; we have two songs from Headhunterz in our picks of the week which is a CONTROLRadioUK first. Both of these songs are absolutely fantastic, all here at CONTROLRadioUK HQ agreed they were both making the picks. For me personally, I've been looking around since Swedish House Mafia went their seperate ways for another DJ/Producer I could get into and I think I'm onto a winner here with Headhunterz. R3hab is a Dutch DJ/Record Producer and basically pressing play on both of these tracks is a fine way to handle a Monday.

So basically this song is a lot of fun and likely to be added to my work-out playlist. During the summer, you need a lot of fun songs. The lyrics aren't the best for me and I would've liked the chorus to have a bit more bass and power to it but as I've said before, as long as you can enjoy a song, it's all good. Cardiknox are an American Indie/Pop band formed in 2013 and you should definitely give them a listen.

This video's a little out there. I'm really not a fan of anything that reminds me of clowns or dolls in this case but amongst the madness is a nice bit of scenery to make this video bearable. The song on the other hand is a belter I knew I was going to love as soon as the music started playing. I really do love the sounds and the lyrics are quite good as well. When I'm inevitably questioned over the usually large amount of albums on my statement, I'll be directing them to CONTROLRadioUK.

This is here simply because I love Meg Myers. Her debut album is amazing. Her music videos as have been commented feel so personal and intimate. If you've never listened to her before then you should since you're really missing out. I know I say that somewhat often, but that's just because there are so many incredible artists that people haven't heard of because the market is so saturated. I think that's a shame and am always encouraging to try new things, so you can thank me later.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

THIS. SONG. IS. A. BOP.
We featured Allie's 'Too Much To Dream' on the picks a little while ago and agreed back then, she had the potential to make some seriously awesome tunes. We're happy to report our suspicions were correct. I purchased this song after exhausting the play button and happily added it to my phone's work-out playlist. All The Rage has some delicious 80's type beats running throughout and the sound reminds us of something else we can't place. Focussing on the song here, it isn't just awesome music, but awesome music fitted to great lyrics. Basically this song deserves all the awards.

First things first; this song contains a small sample that I've heard in another song recently but can't quite place it and that's very annoying.
Moving on to the serious stuff, normally we wouldn't cover an artist like Shawn Mendes here. I find parts of the lyrics problematic but the message of the video and helpline at the end are important. Domestic violence is amongst many issues that unfortunately plagues society. We here at CONTROLRadioUK will give praise to those who use their platform to raise awareness for these issues.

Hold the line; THE NAKED AND FAMOUS ARE BACK. It has been 3 very long years since they released new music. Thankfully they've given us this beauty and the album's out in October. Which is only a 3 month wait so I shall forgive them. I could wax lyricals about this song all day, but why do that when you can press play and discover the magic for yourself. The Naked And Famous are an indie/electronica band from Auckland, Australia, that formed in 2007.

Continuing with the bangers this week, we have this. Within 5 seconds of being shown to CONTROLRadioUK HQ it was agreed this was making the list. So I'm glad my excellent taste in music is being appreciated. Scenery & storytelling are key for me with music videos. What I also like? Animation. Some of my favourite shows/movies as a kid were animated ones, and whilst some might see animated music videos as being lazy, I love them. They're fun, they're pretty and can make a dud song enjoyable. The lyrics are again not the greatest that have ever met my eyes. But the musics on point and so is the video. Chvrches are a Scottish synth/pop band from Glasgow formed in 2011 & Hayley Williams is the lead singer of Paramore.

This song and the video that accompany it are beautiful. Society is insane right now. There's so much hate, darkness & violence infecting the world which saddens me. There are many ways to combat & resolve that which people will focus on, but I prefer to go with light + positivity which this breeds in barrels.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

Ok I'll admit it; I'm a huge Twenty One Pilots fan. Since being introduced to their music, it's rare to find a song that I do not like and Ride is no exception to that. The chorus is magnificent, I love the beats that go throughout the song and the video is really cool. I know some people speak about the difference between an Artist being mainstream & indie but I don't really see it - regardless of whether they're known or you have to trawl through the net, you're still finding great music.

Holding my hands up here; I stopped watching The X Factor years ago. The only reality related programs I watch are cooking shows. So that's an interesting fact for your Monday. I'm not usually into Clean Bandits music, nothing against them, it's just not my type of thing. But this song grabs me. I'd prefer the chorus to have a bigger bang on it, but I'll let it slide here. The video doesn't really have a lot to do with the song, but I'm a sucker for pretty colours and scenery. Clean Bandit are an English electronic group founded in 2009. Louisa Johnson is the latest winner of the English X Factor and from Essex.

Continuing honest Monday, I have absolutely no idea why I like this song or video so much. It should've been boring enough for me to switch TV channels. Instead I did a net search and here we are. It might be because I'm instantly drawn to all things blue, or because I find the dancing to be really impressive. Either way whilst the song doesn't do much for me, it obviously does something and I'm always one to spread the joy. Christine And The Queens is a French singer/songwriter.

Fun fact: I've liked The Temper Trap since Sweet Disposition played during the beginning of a Skins episode (and that's the first and last reference to that on this site) Since then I've been lucky enough to count Love Lost, Science Of Fear & Soldier On amongst my favourite tracks. Fall Together is definitely being added to that list. From the moment the song started playing I loved it, and that is always a good sign. I adore the video not just for the scenery (although that is a big plus) but also for the message contained. The Temper Trap are an Australian rock band that was formed in 2005.

The only thing I'll say about this is after the songs finished, go on iTunes and buy it.

CONTROLRadioUK Reviews: Wynonna Earp Season 1

Whenever a new TV show begins I wait to hear it’s status before deciding whether it’s worth a watch.
There’s no point binging and falling in love with characters, if they’re going to be dragged off our screens by the grim reaper. A show has to really sell me with the trailer to get me to make an exception, and Wynonna Earp did just that.
Picture

The show starts off rather familiarly with a woman getting off a bus in the middle of nowhere - like that ever ends well. It’s then we’re first introduced to the demons that will plague this beautiful show. We then go on to learn Wynonna’s returning to town for a funeral, she’s a reluctant heir to a family of demon killers, everyone in the town hates her & she has an adorable sister with a non-adorable boyfriend. All in all, not bad for a pilot episode.
Picture

From then on things did improve. We got ourselves a lovely little team made up of Wynonna, her sister Waverly, Agent Dolls who works for the black badge division and reluctant hero Doc Holliday.

The eps fluctuate from being about demons of the week to potential long running plots and family drama, so again, not given the opportunity to get too comfortable. Our lovely friend Bobo Del Ray is a capable villain; never swallows up more screen time than needed, owns being bad, has some great one-liners and wisely, there’s no soppy story ordering us to feel sorry for the bad guy. Along the way we meet Nicole Haught, a Police Officer with the hots for Waverly, lose the dumb boyfriend and gain the supposedly dead sister Willa.
Picture

Like every other show that exists though, Wynonna Earp is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. It is great to have the plot constantly moving, never resting on anything for too long. We go from in the beginning hunting the 7 and demon of the week in between, to stopping the witch lady who wants to put her children back together and wreak havoc. After all that we’re given a little bit of breathing space as Wynonna is kidnapped. But then we’re back at it with a cult run by Bobo’s enemy, where Willa is discovered, and the remaining episodes is the built up to Willa going bad. That’s a lot of storylines to get through in 13 episodes. I can’t help thinking it would’ve been better to just focus on one or two of those storylines, and save the rest for later potentially.
Picture

Then we have the fact that whilst the show may be kicking ass on the lady front and have a POC as a prominent cast member, another POC was still tortured and killed to make a white character feel pain. You introduce a blacksmith who knows enough about the supernatural to keep off the grid, let her be a friend to your characters. Don’t bring her in for a few conversations that no-one ever remembers, fall prey to the big scary witch, and then no-one remember she existed to care she’s dead. It’s not smart. It’s not clever. Just like LGBT people, POC are not disposable and only here to serve your needs.
Picture

Which brings me to my next point; Nicole goes from being openly flirtatious with Waverly who has a boyfriend, to disappearing for a few episodes. During this time Waverly dumps said boyfriend and when Nicole is back on screen, things are reaching boiling point with them. They both like each other, Waverly doesn’t really know how to come to terms with it, until of course she does and then hey presto! They’re together. So, being together means an increase in screen time right? Nope. Still 2 minutes in an episode devoted to them making out, odd (and very brief) general conversation, then it’s back to the making out, sister drama and Waverly admitting her love to make Wynonna hand over the gun. If that sounds like a heck of a lot of information to process in such a short amount of time, it’s because it is.

More LGBT characters and couples do need to be at the forefront of our screens, not in the background. As much as Waverly’s admittance of love was undoubtedly cute, it also doesn’t feel earnt to me because I haven’t seen anything on screen to suggest their relationship is that deep. Is it possible she only said it so Wynonna would hand over the gun? Possibly, but I doubt it.
Picture

Of course where there is critique for Waverly & Nicole’s underdevelopment I must also give the show credit. Why? Because both characters made it to the end of the season and into a potential season 2 alive. Yes, you read that correctly. A lesbian and bisexual woman ended the season of a show alive. That’s in a season where they were both shot, because you know how guns just love to hunt down LGBT characters. But the guns lost this time, as Waverly’s injury ended up being minor whilst Nicole was wearing a bullet proof vest. Yes, again you read that right. Bullet proof vests do exist in TV land, it’s just most showrunners are unfortunately allergic to them.

Again there’s no spoilers here but the finale and season altogether was a cracker. I really hope the show is renewed, because it is the second best show I’ve watched this year (Sorry but Supergirl takes the first place crown). The show has its negatives, but enough in it to turn them into positives. The finale laid down the foundations for some great storylines in the finale, I’m just hoping that a certain cliff-hanger isn’t resolved straight away, because that would feel like a cop out. On the whole Wynonna Earp season 1 gets an A Grade.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

Ok I prefer the original version of this song on the album, but Tove Lo isn't the worst person you can have feature on your track. This song is pure and simply a bop. I know the video courted a bit of controversy when it was first released since some people are stuck in a 1920's time warp, but I like it. I think the video matches the lyrics quite well, and all in all, it's just a really great, fun song. Years & Years are a British electronica trio formed in 2010. I was lucky enough to get the album as a Christmas present and can confirm there isn't one bad track on it.

We'll be honest; this has divided CONTROLRadioUK HQ. The song in itself is ok. The lyrics aren't bad, the beats are good, it keeps you hooked and by the end we were dancing along. The video on the other hand? Well I like the lyrics on the background in the chorus and the dancing is good. But that's where the positives end. Margaret is a Polish singer/songwriter and it's worth tracking out some of her other, better songs, online.

When I clicked this song I was expecting it to be a ballad, and happily surprised to discover it's the complete opposite. Sometimes with Religious artists, the songs can come across as being quite preachy which is annoying. I don't know who wants to listen to a song that proclaims everything is wrong with your life until you join them in the Special Kingdom, but it's not me. So very thankful that whilst the lyrics do have the undertones of Religion in them, it's not the focal point and the songs enjoyable. Jordan Feliz is a Christian musician who plays folk rock/soul style of Christian pop.

Let's just get this out there: The Veronicas are supremely underated. I have been a fan of them since coming across Everything I'm Not. I'm not going to say every track they've ever recorded is my cup of tea, but a good 80% of it is. This song is a belter from beginning to end and has already had countless replays. It's not the greatest video you'll ever watch, but sometimes that doesn't matter when the songs as good as this. The Veronicas are an Australian pop/punk duo formed in 2005.

Being honest when the song first started playing, I had to double check to make sure I hadn't accidentally clicked a Halsey video and I've seen people comment similar. That aside the songs quite fun, albeit not exactly what I was expecting, so that's another happy surprise for this week. I absolutely adore the chorus for the guitar and look forward to listening to more stuff from this band. Against The Current (also known as ATC) are a Pop/Rock band from New York formed in 2011.
