CONTROLRadioUK Mid-Week Chart Update

In this Mid-Week Chart Update we're taking a look at potential new entries, non movers & who is sliding up & down the CONTROLRadioUK this weekend.

Madelyn Victoria looks set for a third straight week at the top of the chart with "Hold On", whilst Track Not Found & Brian Kelly are both non-movers holding firm at #2 & #3 respectively. "A Better Man" has been something of a chart main stayer since it first began being playlisted by CONTROLRadioUK, with the song constantly moving up and down the chart.

Graham J
looks to be moving up 1 position to #4 with his track "Deja Vu", whilst Wintergreen's "Not Cricket" has moved back down the chart to #5.

Sebastien Azul & Dominic Azul looks to be the first of two new entries to the CONTROLRadioUK Chart, with their song "I Am The Boy They Don't Understand" at #6 on the mid-week chart. After entering the chart last week, Verity White looks to have slipped down 1 place to #7 with "Breaking Out"

Another new entry last week Laura Brierley looks set to slip down two places to #8 with Tonight. After falling 5 places to #10 last week, Aaron J. Trumm is set to move up one place to #9 with "Here We Go Go Go", whilst C-Drain look on course to enter the chart at #10 with "Come On", meaning that Rozalla B's "Shadow Of The Moon" and Ali Jacko's "I Found Love" are set to drop out of this weeks chart.

There is of course still time for this to all change and you are the ones that make that happen! CONTROLRadioUK Chart positions are decided by how many times a week a song is listened to. So if you want your favorite Artists/Bands to be ruling the CONTROLRadioUK Chart, tune in!

Legends of Tomorrow "The Curse of the Earth Totem" Review

This weeks episode “The Curse of the Earth Totem” was a bit of a departure from Legends of Tomorrow’s usual formula, in that it had 3 different storylines running through the episode.

At a stretch I’d say only two of them worked, and even then I was only majorly invested in one.

I absolutely adore the time travel, after all it is what 99% of the show is about. However other shows have done pirate themed episodes a lot better than this. The Pop-Culture references were OK enough, but I still don’t really understand what the whole point of the pirates storyline was. Or how exactly Damien & his daughter seem to always be right on the Legend’s track.

For a quick recap, the episode began with a Pirate Captain instructing his pirates to bury his treasure, all the whilst telling his lady that he’d kept the most valuable treasure back for them. Said treasure turned out to be one of the Totems the Legends are trying to track down. It drains the life of the Captain’s lady as soon as she puts it on & turns her into a horrific beast.

Nate, Amaya, Mick & Ray dress up as pirates and head to the Bahamas to infiltrate the pirates cove. In an attempt to lift Amaya’s spirits, Nate & Mick with a little help from Ray hype her up to be a marvelous pirate. Unfortunately the hype is ended when Damien & Nora appear, wanting the totem for themselves. The rest of this storyline sees them conjure up a plan to get it back, have to fight the pirate + Darhk and Nora, and Ray being forced to shoot Nora in order to save Amaya’s life. He for some unknown reason feels extremely bad about this & travels back to the cove, where Darhk is holding his dying daughter in his arms and gives her the cure. Nora thanks him by draining the life from Ray, before Darhk halts her in her tracks, another dastardly plan obviously forming which takes up into next week’s episode.

I understand that Ray is by nature a character who cares deeply for others. That and his naivety is something that usually makes us as a viewer feel for him. However explaining to Mick that he feels differently towards Nora now having come across her in her teens is rather silly. Before she met the Legends her path had been chosen. Yes, they attempted to change that, but they were unsuccessful & she is now a villain who has no qualms in hurting any of them and Ray needs to remember that.

We were also treated to Amaya’s woes over her relationship with Nate, as she knows that they don’t have a future together. This storyline is beginning to remind me of the Hawkgirl drama of season 1.

Considering I’ve only just given Legends of Tomorrow another chance, that’s obviously not a good thing.

If Nate & Amaya are truly doomed, then the show just needs to step away from that romantic storyline because setting any couple up to fail isn’t fun to watch. Especially when it’s their recurring storyline throughout numerous episodes.

Onto the only real good part of this episode: Sara and Ava. From the moment they first laid eyes on each other, I saw the potential. The show is now very much exploring that potential and I love it. From admiring how good each other looked, to attempting the awkward small talk, Ava confronting Sara over ditching her, the kiss, fighting the pirates and their end drinks, they are absolutely adorable. As we’ve seen over the episodes as Sara’s denied her feelings for her, Ava brings out a different side in her. It’s one that is fun, and it’s one that I’d very much like to see more of.

I can only hope their relationship makes it through the remainder of the season unscathed, and if the show is renewed, that Ava continues to recur.

She’s a rare LGBT character on TV in the sense that she’s in acquaintance with a series regular and gets more than 2 minutes of screen time. Legends shows her going about her job. It’s given her character a bit of depth with loose conversation. Some shows could do with taking note.

Finally WALLY WEST IS HERE! Unfortunately, her arrival episode was a bit of a damp squid. Whilst getting drunk and bonding with Rip over a rendition of ‘Careless Whispers’ is a scene I will be replaying, I really wish he’d had more to do this episode.

Judging from upcoming promotional pictures it is obviously the shows way of gently introducing him to the viewers, who may not have prior knowledge of Wally from The Flash. But if that was their intention they completely and utterly failed. A brief recap at the beginning of the episode from Wally’s time on The Flash isn’t enough to explain who he is & why exactly the casual viewer should be invested in him. As I say though, that will probably be worked on in the coming weeks, and I look forward to Wally’s proper introduction to the Legends.

5 Songs From CONTROLRadioUK Artists

You've seen our New Music Fridays and 5 picks of songs we think are pretty neat from non CONTROLRadioUK Artists. Well in this brand new feature, we're bring you 5 songs from CONTROLRadioUK Artists. These songs were chosen by our CEO/Director Trisha Benjamin, so without further ado!

This song may be familiar to those of you who keep up with the CONTROLRadioUK charts, Strange is most definitely my type of moody Blues song. The video fits the tone of the song excellently and Indira May is a pretty fine singer.

She hasn't yet broken into the CONTROLRadioUK Charts, but I wouldn't be surprised if Karrie Hayward is ruling it soon with Going To The Grave. It's another quality song, somewhat dipping its toes into the water of Country/Rock with that lovely guitar riff, and I do like a music video set in the woods.

Ali Jacko is already blowing up the CONTROLRadioUK Chart with this song, to no surprise whatsoever. I Found Love is a beautiful song, with a beautiful video to accompany it.

Another song that has quite rightly been a mainstay on the CONTROLRadioUK Charts for a couple of weeks now, is this fantastic song from Dol Vita. Dream has been rooted to my playlist since it was released. Fantastic songs like this deserve equally brilliant music videos and Dol Vita more than delivers here.

This is a really great song written by Joanna Alina. The video fits the tone of the song heartbreakingly well and the message of Back To You is one that will resonate with a lot of people.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I absolutely love Bishop Briggs. She's such a talented singer, incapable of producing a bad song. White Flag is yet another fine example of that. It's an extremely powerful song musically with one hell of a chorus, and just as fine lyrically. She also did an excellent cover of Never Tear Us Apart for the 50 Shades soundtrack (the movies are complete and utter trash but we can all agree it unfortunately has a killer soundtrack). If you've never listened to any of Bishop Briggs music before, I strongly advise you give her a play because she is terrific.

This song has spent the weekend on repeat. It's just an absolutely fantastic song that will quickly get stuck in your head, and I say that as someone who has never really been that into Kate Nash's before. The music video fits the songs fun vibe and I'm intrigued to see what her album sounds like (and if you're wondering where exactly you've heard the name before, you can currently see her starring in Glow which is available on Netflix.

< Usually I'd be questioning why on earth MØ is doing another feature instead of a solo effort & more importantly when on earth her second album is coming out, because I'm a greedy person who needs more than EP's. But she fits really well on this duet with Noah Cyrus, someone of whom I never thought I'd be listening to. We Are.... is a really fun song. Lyrics are catchy enough to quickly get stuck in your head and the music is top notch as well.

An absolutely beautiful music video, even if it does make me feel even chillier than the ice-cold temptations we are currently facing here in the UK, Turn Up The Fire is an ace track. It's hard to believe Nova Miller is only 16 years old, and she has the potential to be a huge star.

I do like a bit of Ricky Martin. And by a bit I of course mean my Spotify playlist is littered with his songs. Fiebre has absolutely been added to that list. The official music video for this song has been released, but isn't featured here as I think the song is perfectly fine as a solo effort and more importantly? Really not a fan of unnecessary rap.

Legends of Tomorrow "Here I Go Again" Review

As someone who recently decided to give Legends of Tomorrow another show starting at season 3 (no amount of money will persuade me to sit through season 1 again & who has the time to binge watch 2 seasons, when it’s hard enough binging one show!) I can tell you two thing;

1)I am really glad I am friends with people who love this show, constantly talk about it & said talk persuaded me to give it another shot.
2)Legends of Tomorrow is without doubt the best Arrow-verse show on TV

Where other shows struggle to get the humorous and more serious tones of an episode correct, Legends of Tomorrow does it with the most ease. The characters are all relatively likeable. The romantic sub-plots do not take up the bulk of screen time. Due to the shows somewhat procedural nature, it is easier to dip into than the more serialized Arrow-verse shows. And of course that ‘Return of the Mack’ fight scene, which was so hilariously campy, if any other show had even tried to attempt it? Would’ve been downright stupid.

Legends of Tomorrow returned from its winter hiatus last week with ‘Daddy Darkhest’. In case you somehow missed the memo and are wondering why it had just over a 2 month break, it is sharing its Monday time slot with Supergirl. So there’s X amount of Supergirl episodes in a row followed by a break, in which Legends of Tomorrow airs X amount of episodes, then goes on a break & rise + repeat until the season ends. ‘Daddy Darhkest’ was a great episode for the show to return on, with Constantine making a guest appearance and Leo Snart leaving.

‘Here I Go Again’ would probably be classed as a bottle episode, since all the episodes action took place on the Waverider, and aside from Gavin, Gideon & Ava’s cameos, the episode was completely focused on the Legends with no villains of the week.

Chosen to anchor this episode is Zari, who ends up being the only team member stuck in an hour long time loop. At the end of the hour, the ship explodes and they all die. No matter how hard she tries to prevent this, she fails. It’s not a storyline that is particularly original, and some could say Zari wasn’t the best character to anchor such an episode, but I think it worked really well.

She began the episode being tasked with carrying out some routine repairs on the ship, whilst the other Legends were on a mission. Instead, she’d spent her time attempting to hack history. Unlike the other Legends who understand that it is only their place to fix the parts of history which they broke, Zari wants to amend it via loopholes. The end goal of course being to save her brother from death. When confronted by Sara she attempts to play the ‘you don’t know how it feels to lose a sibling card’ and Sara of course does with Laurel losing her life at Damien Darhk’s hands.

Zari’s extremely opinionated, ignores Sara’s orders and proclaims that the Legends need her but she doesn’t need them. During the time loop she learns that isn’t necessarily the case.

Whilst she’s at first thrown by the events and wondering whether or not she’s going insane, she quickly realizes she isn’t and attempts to reach out to the team for help in stopping the loop, and more importantly, them all from dying. Sara doesn’t believe her & thinks that she’s high, ordering Ray to give her a sedative. Nate attempts to help but quickly gets distracted by his romantic liaisons with Amaya. Mick is nowhere to be found, as he’s doing laundry and secretly writing a romance novel. Every time the loop restarts, Zari seeks Nate out for help until she gets fed up by how easily distracted he is, and instead goes to Ray. Always happy to help, Ray joins Zari as they search the ship to try and find out what exactly might be causing the ship to explode.

It’s through this that they stumble upon Mick’s secret romantic novel, and I must say the boobie traps were quite amusing. But what I enjoyed most about this was them shrinking & following Sara onto the jump ship, where she has been sneaking off to have private conversations with Ava.

Ever since she was first introduced at the beginning of the season, I saw the potential for her and Sara’s love to hate relationship to turn into a love to like one. It is obvious that the two do somewhat have feelings for each other, but both are nervous over exploring what exactly those feelings could be. Sara because everyone that she loves gets hurt & she doesn’t have the best romantic track record, and Ava no doubt because of the time bureau.

None the less seeing how bashful Sara was when Ava attempted to ask her out, followed by their joint awkwardness at Sara claiming to be busy, was absolutely adorable. I really do need these two to becoming a thing.

After being driven insane by repeating the constant hour over and over again, and not being able to change anything, Zari reaches her breaking point and attempts to shoot herself. She fails and in the aftermath Sara is ready and waiting to offer a helpful ear. Zari again explains to her what happens, and where Sara before thought she was crazy, she’s now ready to listen. She gathers the crew and they join Zari in searching the ship.

There they stumble across Garry, who explains he’s responsible for the constant loop. He traveled to the ship after being alerted that something was wrong, wanted to warn them, unfortunately that didn’t go well and the consequence is the loop. Unfortunately the device that keeps putting them into the loop where time runs out is destroyed, so now when the ship blows up they really will be dead.

Continuing her enormous character growth, Zari decides to sacrifice herself in order to save the others. She gives a nice long speech, which though heartfelt, kinda a bit silly given they are running out of time and instead of hearing nice words of advice, they really need to find the bomb. When the time runs out though, nothing happens. Well, except for everyone bar Zari disappearing and she’s greeted by Gideon.

There she explains that everything that has been happening was in Zari’s head. At the beginning of the episode, whilst carrying out those maintenance checks on the ship, she had a rather unpleasant encounter with the ships futuristic goo. It helps power the ship and has also injured Zari, who has actually spent the episode in a coma whilst her body heals.

That’s right. Nothing in the episode was real. Gideon, the computer that runs the ship, hooked Zari’s head up to her database. Don’t ask me to explain all the ins and outs of that, because I still barely understand it. The most important take-away is the ship ISN’T blowing up. They’re NOT all gonna die. Everything is totally fine. It’s basically just 42 minutes of our lives wasted away on a bottle episode that does nothing.

At this point one should be annoyed. Even possibly feel cheated. And yet, the only feeling I have is one of impress. The events of the episode may not have been real to the other Legends, but they were certainly real for Zari.

She’s learnt that she needs the Legends just as much as they need her. That she does consider them part of her family, the way they consider her. Most importantly, she’s had a ton of character development that should help her going forward.

And really, if we’re not tuning into a show each week for the storyline developments, then we’re tuning in for the characters, and Legends of Tomorrow has delivered here.

Zari gives Mick some useful critique on his romantic novel, which he does indeed take on board and is completely adorable in the process. She gives Nate and Amaya advice on their dating arrangement. She and Sara have a better understanding of one another. And we got a cameo appearance from Wally West at the end of the episode, which I think is extremely important to mention.

He has left The Flash for good, and is joining Legends of Tomorrow. For good. Given how wasted he was on The Flash, this is a move that Wally West fans are moderately happy with, and I can’t wait to see how he fits in with the Legends.

This Monday’s episode of Legends of Tomorrow brings us back to our normal swash-buckling programming, and I honestly can’t wait! You can watch it, along with the Season 4 premiere of iZombie, on The CW.

New Music Fridays

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat. And on New Music Friday, we're bringing you a select choice of the freshest tracks released this week.

They might be known for their more anthemic Rock numbers, but Imagine Dragons know how to produce those ballads that hit us in our core. With heartfelt lyrics accompanying a somber tone that gradually builds into the songs climax 'Next To Me' might just be the most beautiful song Imagine Dragons have done. And the cover art that accompanies the track is pretty top notch as well, very much fitting with the atmosphere of the song.

You may have seen us mention Lullaby in our New Releases article. DJ and Record Producer Sigala has combined with Paloma Faith to bring us a might fine tune. This is Paloma Faith's second dance song, having previously teamed up with Sigma in 2014 for Changing which was quite the belter. Paloma most definitely has the voice for the Pop/Dance market, so one can only hope for some more collabs in the future.

Excusing the pun, but this song is very much Heavenly. It's a wonderfully uplifting Pop/Rock number from start to finish, which isn't surprising at all considering I'm yet to come across a Pale Waves song I don't like. The only possible complaint would be that the song is so short.

Continuing with the dance theme this week is this new belter from David Guetta, Martin Garrix and Brooks. Considering Guetta & Garrix are two of the most in demand DJ's in the world, that's not really a surprise. But considering the market is laden with Pop/Electric/EDM songs, the fact Like I Do manages to sound so fresh is impressive. From start to finish it's an absolute ride and this is one of those songs you will be breaking the replay button on.

Another song mentioned in our New Releases article, Shadow is Alexandra Burke's first song in 6 years. It really is quite hard to believe that she's been away for so long, but Shadow is a great comeback song. The album The Truth Is comes out 16th March and Alexandra will also be embarked on a UK Tour beginning the 1st September, which you can buy tickets for now.

This Weeks New Releases

5 Seconds of Summer are back after a 3 year break with their new single 'Want You Back' whilst Alexandra Burke is also making a comeback with her first single in 6 years 'Shadow'.

Sigala has teamed up with Paloma Faith for 'Lullaby', which is an absolute cracker of a track. After a 5 year break Janelle Monae is back with two singles 'Make Me Feel' and 'Django Jane'.

There isn't much movement on the album front this week, with 'Extend The 80's - Electro' amongst the compilations released. Following its renewal news last week, Midnight Texas Season 1 is now available on DVD, along with The Death Of Stalin, Thelma and Thor: Ragnarok. You can also now get OneRepublic: Live In South Africa Tour DVD and Goodbye Christopher Robin.

DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW
“No Country for Old Dads” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)
