CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

Here we have a familiar face in Walking On Cars. Speeding Cars was a great song. Catch Me If You Can? Even better and I didn't think that was possible. By now you should know I am a sucker for scenery & story to a music video and Walking On Cars once again manage to top themselves here. If you haven't given them a listen, you are truly missing out on a treat.

There are songs that come along that you really want to hate but dang-nabbit! They sound awesome. The chorus beat is basic and the lyrics aren't anything spectacular, but I'm still bouncing along. The video's mostly made up of Rihanna dancing in a box surrounded by green screen which isn't anything special. But I love the lights and the visuals, so enjoy this guilty pleasure and we shall never speak of it again.

I can't explain what it is I love about this. Scenery is definitely one, and sometimes I prefer a simple video for a song so the lyrics can do their job without any distractions which is what we have here. Gnash is an American Singer/Songwriter/DJ/Producer and Oliver O'Brien is a Singer/Songwriter

We at CONTROLRadioUK HQ were bouncing our heads to this within seconds of pressing play, so that's always a good indication a tracks going to be good. I love the sound and the lyrics if you really listen to them tell quite the interesting story. Shura is an English Singer.

If we graded songs, this would get an A*****. Within seconds of clicking play I knew I was going to love this and I could quite happily listen to it on repeat all day without getting bored. It really is that good. The video adds to the songs emotion which would get it another *. Seriously. Click play and welcome this fantastic song into your life, and then go listen to the album. Meg Myers is an American singer/songwriter. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to jam.

Thank you to everyone who voted in our first ever poll! Without further ado, here are the top 5 songs you chose as your LGBT/World Anthems.

In fifth place we have Black Eyed Peas with Where Is The Love. It was a song released all the way back in June 2003, but still holds true 13 years later.

In fourth place we have the original Born This Way in Express Yourself by Madonna. It was released in May 1989.

Just missing out on second place we have the awesome Animal by Kesha, which is from the debut album of the same name.

In second place we have the fantastic Secret Love Song Part ll from Little Mix, from the album Get Weird. You can find the live versions that truly do this song justice online.

You can't have an LGBT anthem list if this song isn't included. Taken from her seventh studio album Light Years it is your Number 1 CONTROLRadioUK LGBT/World Anthem.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

Couldn't pick a better way to start this week right? Showing this to CONTROLRadioUK HQ the reaction was 'Interesting', which I think sums this video up perfectly. I stumbled upon this through a recommendation and wasn't sure what to make of it. What's going on with the boy? What's up with the people in the car? Why is the video spent with different people in the car with the boy driving? Why are they sometimes miming in sync and other times out of place? What is with this video in general? The answer to all those questions I think is best left to interpretation and I like songs and videos that make you think. Thrice are an American rock band from Irvine, California, that formed in 1998.

First thing to say: Go and watch part 1 & 2 of the Blue Neighbourhood trilogy. We're not featuring them here but in its entirety it's the most hauntingly beautiful thing I have watched this year (and I've watched a lot of stuff). It truly is incredible and as heartbreaking as it is, I can watch the trilogy over and over again because it's what I want from music and the videos that accompany them - a story that gets me at my core and never bores. Troye Sivan is a South African born Australian singer/songwriter/actor/Youtuber and for someone so young to craft such a story in a music video? Amazing.

Continuing the trend of fine stories to accompany a fine track, if you've never been with someone you've suspected or know is cheating then you're a rare lucky person. But for the rest of us this story is unfortunately all too common. Stating the obvious by now, but for those of you who are new, I am a big fan of scenery. Combine that with the above and you are onto a winner with me. If you have the attitude that this song has, well that's just the cherry on top. Anne-Marie is an English singer/songwriter you've probably heard of as she's with Rudimental, and she is definitely one to watch this year.

Our second song of the week to focus on those pesky matters of heartbreak and relationship issues, albeit in a different respect which is what makes this song so interesting and the lyircs really resonate. We've again got that scenery that I love so much, video matching the lyrics and a delicious beat that runs through the song just in case the rest doesn't hold attention. Astrid S is a Norwegian Singer/Songwriter.

Our last pick of the week doesn't need introduction. You know who Christina Aguilera is. The lyrics of this song and the lyric video that accompanies says all that needs to be said. Just press play and let the message of the song sink over you.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

This was actually pretty tough to decide since I like Hotter Than Hell as well, but I am a sucker for gorgeous scenery and this songs been in my head since Friday so it's clearly a winner. Dua Lipa is an English singer/songwriter born to Albanian parents. She also, like me, attended Sylvia Young Theatre School so yes! Definitely one to look out for.

Ok so when I suggested this song, I was greeted with surprise since apparently 'this isn't your usual type of music'. This is true and once again a result of Music Channel surfing, but as I always say, if you can have a random video on the TV and NOT want to turn it off within 10 seconds of hearing it? There's something good in it. I'll let the rap in the middle of the song slide due to the song being ridiculously infectious. IV Rox are a girl group from England/Netherlands.

First, I was not a big fan of Mike Posner when he first came out. Second, this song is awesome. Like I have the two different versions of this song because I love it so much, and it hasn't left my phone since awesome. Artists who can reflect and poke fun at themselves in their lyrics without going overboard I can respect. The video also speaks to me and where the two different versions is related, I'm usually a person who hates remixes. They seriously have to impress and give me that extra umph for me to even bother pressing the play button. Mike Posner is an American singer/songwriter/record producer.

Before Saturday morning I had never heard of Christina Grimmie. But like many others, I felt the heartbreak and cried the tears at a life taken before it'd had a chance to begin to an appalling crime. I'm not going to lie this weekend on a whole has sucked. Massively. We all need something though to get us through dark times and music is it for me. Counting Stars is amongst my top OneRepublic songs and Christina did an excellent cover of it, so therefore it felt like the right pick to honour her. RIP Christina.

I first heard of MØ through her featuring on Lean On with Major Lazer & Diplo, which I didn't like at all but tolerated hearing. She's actually been around since 2012 and her own music is in my opinion miles better. Once again I am a sucker for gorgeous scenery. The lyrics also speak to me and I just love the sound of the chorus. MØ is a Danish singer/songwriter and if you haven't checked out her stuff, you are missing out.

CONTROLRadioUK Reviews: The 100 Season 3

The doors have closed on another season of TV. We’ve watched heartbreak, death, love, celebration, wars, continuity and retcons in all their glory, enjoying and hating in equal measures.

Whenever a new TV show begins I wait to hear it’s status before deciding whether it’s worth a watch. There’s no point binging and falling in love with characters, if they’re going to be dragged off our screens by the grim reaper. Viewing the trailer for The 100’s first season, I thought it was a show that had promise. I was warned that the first couple of eps are shall we say not of the greatest quality, and that is something I reminded myself constantly through viewing. I hated Wells being killed by Charlotte who then killed herself, Jasper was annoying, couldn’t stand Bellamy and don’t get me started on Murphy. I binged the show over a 2-week period, constantly telling myself I was going to stop watching after the next ep to get on with work and before I knew it was 11pm and time for bed. The 100? Not a bad TV show.

Fast forwarding to s3 and because I loved the show so much, I deciding against viewing online and instead waited the extra weeks for my viewing to count on the TV. It was extremely hard to avoid spoilers since they were everywhere, but when you really love a show, it’s always worth the wait. S3 didn’t fail those expectations but it didn’t exactly match them either.

Now granted my viewing is slightly behind on actual viewing so I had the advantage of knowing where storylines were going to lead before they actually got there, which may have made it somewhat easier. But still the beginning of the City Of Light story? Boring. Jaha has never been my favourite character. I actually skipped over his scenes in season 2 because I could not be dealing with him. Involving Murphy in this storyline made it somewhat more bearable, and I dare say Murphy is one of the characters who’s had the most development since the show began. The storyline did pick up in the middle of the season which was a plus. But it still loses major points for the fact I dislike any storyline that involves taking a characters free-will away from them. When you add torture and manipulation to that, I’m afraid it’s a no from me.

I know a lot of people have complained about Clarke being separated from the main camp for the majority of the season, but I actually didn’t mind it. But the way Clarke & Lexa were handled could’ve been better. The 100 is a rare show I watch without shipper goggles on, and when Lexa was introduced last season I loved her immediately. Unlike the majority of people when she betrayed Clarke to save her own, I didn’t hate her. For me, it would’ve been out of character for her to do anything else because Lexa was a warrior first and foremost. That’s what made her death so anticlimactic. For S4 I would like more Clarke/Abby scenes. Their relationship is extremely complicated and was one of my favourites when the show began, so it has been sad to see it somewhat dwindle down.

I didn’t find Pike’s storyline to be as frustrating as others did. It has been said that the storyline came out of nowhere but I don’t think it did. From the moment he was introduced his hatred of grounders was clear and understandable. Of course tying everyone with the same brush isn’t right, but when you only have on experience to guide you I can see why you would. Having the others at the camp who have had both positive and negative experiences with the grounders, but agreed to go by the peace treaty all of a sudden jump on Pike’s wagon? Considering you had the likes of Octavia, Lincoln, Abby & Kane around, it felt a little rushed.

The same can be said for Bellamy’s relationship. I can’t honestly remember his girlfriend’s name which doesn’t surprise me, considering she only existed to push him towards Pike’s agenda. It’s another of those annoying tropes, and perhaps it would’ve been better to spend a little less time on the COL at the beginning, and a little more time with Bellamy and his love. I also found it a tad annoying that Bellamy along with Pike murdered innocent people and whilst Finn was rightly lambasted Bellamy? Well no-one’s said a word. I understand it was once again for story purposes, but I am going to need to see some sort of consequence next year. As for Lincoln? Having an actor on a regular contract only for them to say around 5 words every few eps, put them with a main character only for them to later be executed? Not class and not clever. Lincoln had a lot of potential when he was introduced and it was wasted.

So that’s the negatives out the way. The positives for the show are routed firmly with its actors. Even if the writing is horrible, as long as you have a talented actor at your disposal? Not all bad. Eliza Taylor and Lindsey Morgan are the stand-outs for me. Playing different characters can be quite tricky, but Lindsey knocked it out the park first when A.L.I.E restored Raven’s pain and bad memories to make her submit, and then when A.L.I.E took over her body. The way Raven got up so calm and collected is the creepiest thing I’ve seen on TV outside of the weekly Criminal Mind visits. Eliza was great in Lexa’s death scene, the episode that followed and of course the finale. Be it Clarke overcome at seeing Lexa again, standing by and letting Abby almost kill herself and then comforting her in the finale? It’s pure class.

On a whole I give The 100 Season 3 a B Grade. It had a lot of negatives I hope are worked on, but it also had a number of positives. City Of Light story came good, Octavia got retribution for Lincoln’s death, Leva, Raven & Clarke were awesome in the combined take down of A.L.I.E and there were a number of exceptional performances. Given the fact I got through Season 1 despite my misgivings, it will take a lot for me to give up on this show, though I am more cautious on my anticipation for S4.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat. Check out our picks below and feel free to leave a comment on your top songs.

We here at CONTROLRadioUK have always loved Gwen Stefani and this song is no different (although I do think Make Me Like You is better). The beats and lyrics are perfect whilst the video is stunning. Gwen is probably an artist you have heard of being in No Doubt and she's an American from California.

Ok this is a bit of an oldie but the posts online over Jack Black's death hoax reminded me of how much I love this song so here it is. I can't pinpoint what it is about this song that's so awesome, it just is. Tenacious D are an American comedy rock duo and like Gwen, from California.

There are often times in multi-tasking you find yourself listening to something and thinking it's pretty rad, and then you come across the video that accompanies it and you're not really sure what to think. That is what we have here. Melanie Martinez is an American singer/songwriter. You have probably heard her songs in passing and not known who she is. Well now you can thank us for putting a video to the music. You're welcome.

I'm ridiculously excited for the new Ghostbusters movie, and with a movie comes a soundtrack. Within 10 seconds of playing this song I loved it so that's always a good sign. Elle King is an American singer/songwriter/actress. If you haven't listened to any of her songs, you're missing out on a treat. But honestly, I'm just really excited for the new Ghostbusters film. Contrary to a misinformed belief it does not look completely terrible *and breathe*.

Ahh summertime. Lot's of partying and fun on the beach to be had, with songs you dance the night away to on the dance floor. This is one of those songs. It's got such a feel good factor to it and unlike a lot of other songs, it actually has a great beat drop I have indeed been dancing away to. It's really quite impossible not to. Dragonette are a Canadian electronis music band from Toronto.

CONTROLRadioUK Discusses: Bury Your Gays

Editor’s Note: This was originally going to be a review of The 100’s third season, which will now be published at a later date.

Ahh TV. How you continue to disappoint. No spoilers here, but last night yet another LGBT character was killed. Yet again showrunners defended themselves. Yet again people were fuming.

“This is the 20th dead lesbian/bisexual character of 2016, not even counting the ones who’ve died and come back. So don’t try to tell me that I’m just bitter about one from a few months ago. I’m furious. This isn’t a discussion for me. Did you kill your lesbian? Then congrats, you’ve fallen into the “kill your lesbian” trope, and you don’t get to condescend to those of us who are suffering and tell us we aren’t justified. We SHOULD be angry about this. Just because it’s not the same situation as it was on a certain other show, doesn’t mean there aren’t a whole lot of similarities that should be and need to be talked about.”

“I can’t believe another wlw character has been killed, it makes me so angry and I don’t even watch. I think us gays better start wearing bulletproof vests as that’s obviously what happens to us all.”
“I’m so tired of seeing lady loving fandoms ECSTATIC about the scraps they’ve been given on screen, only to have it destroyed before the month is out by the death of one of the ladies.”

“It’s still a show choosing a narrative that apparently REQUIRES the death of an amazing lesbian character (not to mention the death of an amazing black woman character earlier on in the show, still not over it). WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH OF THESE CHARACTERS to go around excusing narratives that kill them. We do not have enough of these characters to be killing them! Period!!! I don’t care if the storyline was “worth it” or “made sense”, lesbian and poc characters need an equal amount of storylines where they DON’T die (equal to the hets and white people, that is) before it is EVER okay for narratives to delve into shock-value killings or sacrifices or messiah deaths or whatever else you wanna label this bullshit.”

stray bullet:*hurls towards lesbian*
lesbian:IM STRAIGHT!
stray bullet:*immediately drops to the ground*
lesbian:phew. that was close.

Despite what showrunners will have you believe, the Bury Your Gay trope has unfortunately existed for years. I first came across it in Buffy The Vampire Slayer when Tara was killed by a stray bullet, which is coincidentally is how Lexa met her demise in The 100 earlier this season. I knew Lexa would be leaving the show so her death wasn’t a surprise to me. Venturing into areas of the Internet where they feel safe to interact with fans & using them for the ratings? That’s not right. In the aftermath of Lexa’s death the ratings for the show did indeed fall and there was a massive wave of publicity. All of which I deem a good thing.
As said, this trope has existed for years. People have mocked shows, hoping their favourite character doesn’t come out as LGBT or be introduced as that from the off, for fear of them dying. If an LGBT character gets a rare happy ending, it’s celebrated for days and showrunners thanked which is quite sad. Yet 9/10 times if a showrunner is brought up on it, they claim they did not know the trope existed. Or their show is doing things differently. Or better yet they write things so far in advance that when the ep broadcasts, the timing is unfortunate but they can’t change it. Yes you can. It’s simply called don’t kill your LGBT character.

Which brings us to our next point: This is the 21st century. Parts of the world are still unfortunately homophobic. Some people still vehemently defend their interpretation of religion, telling LGBT people what they can and can’t do (Being gay is still punishable by death in parts of the world, gay marriage is accepted in places whilst opposed in others and of course the transgender bathroom debacle) whilst claiming they don’t care what LGBT people do as long as it’s away from them, like being LGBT is a disease that can quickly be caught. But we’re trying to move away from that. We’re trying to be more positive, being vocal in support for LGBT pride and telling people they don’t have to be afraid of their sexuality, you’re allowed to love who you love and don’t let anyone else tell you different. For some of those people watching an LGBT character on TV is part of the process in realising their own sexuality. They can come out and admit what they are because their favourite character did. Life may be hard and stressful, but they can seek sanctuary in their favourite TV show and online community and talk to people just like them. When an LGBT character dies that sanctuary is taken. How is a person supposed to be comfortable and happy in their life when TV is telling them that being so leads to nothing but death and despair? Kind of goes against the message we’re trying to get across isn’t it?

Why are LGBT characters always first on the list to meet the Grim Reaper over a straight one? That’s the big question. Are showrunners supposed to keep an LGBT character around long past their time, just so they’re not adding to the trope? No and again to use the example, that is why Lexa’s death did not greatly annoy me. Don’t get me wrong I loved the character and defended her to eternity during s2. But in shows like The 100 I go into it knowing that characters are always dying. If they didn’t, well there’d be no show. Lexa was a warrior and when you’re in a war, there’s two solutions and Lexa met one of them so I get that. But killing a person by a stray bullet meant for someone else, mere scenes after a relationship’s been consummated? I’ll accept that’s just cruel. Had her finale exit of going off to face A.L.I.E’s army instead been her first exit? I think people would have been more understanding. Killing an LGBT character to further a straight person’s story, eliminate them from a triangle so the bi woman and straight man can live happily ever after, having the death mean absolutely nothing at all to the story going forward or leaving the fate of a character in the balance for eps at a time, giving the audience hope it will be ok before taking that away? Not cool.

During a discussion I commented on the pilot shows for next year and how despite the anger people feel, I don’t see anything being changed because if it was going to, it would’ve been by now. It was put to me the trope could exist because of bigotry and sexism. That society cannot accept a woman might not want or need a man in her relationships and because of that, the characters being punished. Why so many deaths have happened this year compared to any other? Possibly a backlash to the fact same sex marriage is an option in more places. Is it a conscious or unconscious action by showrunners? Possibly a mixture of both. But all are based on sexism and that belief ‘queer’ women should never be happy unless with a man. In my honest opinion I do think that argument holds weight.

The LGBT community has long been tired of it. They want to see their favourite characters in relationships that are not just background noise. They want them to be able to watch them at the centre of storylines. Not going online for clips of the character’s part in the ep which are only 2 minutes long. Of course in a drama, a couple and characters are going to have problems, but those problems can have a happy ending. Let the straight person be the one to take the bullet for once. Stop treating LGBT characters like an endangered species hunted for sport. Most of all, the LGBT community just wants to be respected and accepted as an equal. So stop Burying The Gays.
