CONTROLRadioUK Reviews: All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell

With Taylor Swift once again dominating the headlines, it would be easy to overlook last weeks album releases. However I'd advise you to hit Youtube, Spotify, Amazon or your nearest record store as soon as you can, because 'All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell' is beyond praise a mere mortal like I can give. It is an album that will stay with you long after the 20th listen, and have you debating endlessly over which track is the best. SPOILER ALERT! They all are.

That's what makes PVRIS such a fantastic band. They are completely and utterly incapable of making a bad song, and every song sound that little bit better than previous, but you still love it all the same. I've listened to a number of albums this year from some incredible Artists, and they are all good albums in their own right. However none of them can touch PVRIS.

If I were to go through the album song by song, you'd probably be reading this article for the next 84 years. Instead I'll attempt to narrow this down to my top 5.

1) Anyone Else 2) Walk Alone 3) Same Soul 4) What's Wrong 5) No Mercy

The chorus of 'Anyone Else' will be stuck in your head for days.
'Walk Alone' starts off as a ballad before breaking off into a brilliant drum and bass chorus which I absolutely adore.
'Same Soul' is beautiful musically with a magnificent chorus and lyrics that completely gut you.
'What's Wrong' was a fantastic lead single that really sets the tone of the album, and I don't have any words that can properly describe just how great 'No Mercy' is.

There has been some critic from fans that 'All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell', shows no progression from their debut album 'White Noise'.

That's a critic I completely disagree with and have to wonder what exactly these people are listening to.

There's no doubting 'White Noise' is a great debut album, but AWKOHAWNOH takes PVRIS to another level. Production, lyrically and indeed musically it is so much crispier. Then there are those who claim 'Anyone Else' isn't a good song, which is just blasphemy. The only critic I could possibly give PVRIS is narrowing the album down to just 10 songs, but that's simply because I'm greedy and the more PVRIS the better.

Album Rating: 10/10

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

I love The Amazons. Their self titled debut album is magnificent. The guitar break in the middle of 'Ultraviolet' is nothing short of superb, and their music actually means something. It's not just basic rhyming couplets with predictable beats. As said their debut album is magnificent since no song sounds the same which I can appreciate, and it's extremely rare for their to not be one filler song. You can stream the album on Spotify.

It's no secret how much I like Grouplove. They make extremely fun music, and I'm honestly sick of people accusing musicians of selling out, just because their music sounds different to something released 5 years ago. It's called progression and is something to be celebrated. 'Remember That Night' is another fun number from Grouplove, which starts off as a ballad and then quickly explodes. The chorus is already stuck in my head and I've only listened to this song 3 times. Visuals are a bit weird though.

I didn't know what exactly I was expecting when I pressed play, but this is quite good. The bicycle moves are extremely impressive, and it's a decent enough feel-good song. It doesn't exactly blow me a way, the music is nothing new at all, and lyrically it doesn't have much substance to it. Rachel Platten is mostly known for 'Fight Song' which somewhat unexpectedly blew up in 2015. Nobody wants to be stuck as a one hit wonder, but I think it's worse to be stuck as a one genre wonder, which is what I'd class Rachel Platten as. Every Artist has the odd feel good song which is OK, but you need to be able to come up with something different every now and then, and Rachel Platten just doesn't do that.

This is an example of a feel good song done right. The video is gorgeous, completely in tone with the songs message and I love the self awareness Echosmith had with the concept. The music actually goes somewhere, and the lyrics are extremely relatable without feeling preachy. 'Future Me' is the second Echosmith song to feature here in as many weeks. I have only just started listening to them and they're a pretty great band. Their album 'Inside A Dream' is released on 29th September.

PVRIS are incapable of making a bad song. That's not me fangirling, it's just pure and simple facts. A review of 'All We Know Of Heaven All We Need Of Hell' will be up in due case, so all I'll say here is it doesn't disappoint. Where 'Anyone Else' is concerned, this video is as spectacular as the song. The way it explodes in the second half is nothing short of outstanding, and you're lying if you say 'I don't belong to anyone else' isn't stuck in your head.

'Look What You Made Me Do' Is CONTROLRadioUK's Video Of The Week

I know it's only Monday. But there is no other video this week that is as good as this. Whether you love, hate, or love to hate Taylor, you are watching this video and that's a sign of a true superstar - able to draw people in even when they don't want to be.

Taylor Swift is never far from controversy or a feud, and what she does better than anyone else is make fun of herself. Is 'Look What You Made Me Do' a particularly good song? No, and it's hard not to sing along to 'I'm Too Sexy' in the chorus. In this video she's taking on the whole damn world and leaving it shook. There are so many Easter Eggs hidden in this song, but my most favorite part without a doubt is the end with the various Taylor's calling each other out. It's absolutely delicious.

She's taking on the people accusing her so called 'squad' of being a manufactured group of friends. She's taking on the people who call her a snake. She's taking on the people that accused her of being greedy for taking her records off streaming sites. She's taking on people who accuse her relationships of being nothing but PR drivel. She's taking on the infamous Kim Kardashian recording. She's taking on people accusing her of being nothing but a fame whore. She's taking on the 'This Is What You Came For' controversy. She even finds time to take on the infamous 'I <3 T Swift' t-shirt. All of this in one video! Again 'Look What You Made Me Do' isn't a particularly good song, but I feel people judged its release and the accompanying lyric video too harshly on Friday. The whole point of lyric videos is to get the audience hyped up for the actual music video, and do some damage to the chart. For Billboards sake I truly hope Taylor Swift does said damage, because there is no way a song as disgracefully ordinary as 'Despacito' should beat Mariah Carey's record.

Me personally I have never been a massive fan of Taylor Swifts music. 1989 was a great album and indeed the first one of hers I bought, but her songs tend to be a little ordinary for my taste. Her music videos however, more times than not, are on a whole other level. 'Look What You Made Me Do' is the perfect comeback track so to speak. It's Taylor making fun of herself, enemies and media speculation as best Taylor does, without actually being specific in anything. Which is something that we tend to praise a lot of celebrities for, but as soon as Taylor Swift does it? She's being fake, unable to really go full pelt because she's too afraid of facing things head on. A completely ridiculous notion, and 'Look What You Made Me Do' is the diss track and music video that other Artists can only dream of perfecting.

5 Songs From CONTROLRadioUK Artists

You've seen our Throwback Thursdays and 5 picks of songs we think are pretty neat from non CONTROLRadioUK Artists. Well in this brand new feature, we're bring you 5 songs from CONTROLRadioUK Artists. These songs were chosen by our CEO/Director Trisha Benjamin, so without further ado!

This is a perfect soft rock song for a Bank Holiday Monday. BTS/Tour videos don't usually work for me, but this actually fits the tone of the song perfectly.

This is a really beautiful song. Anna Farquhar has a brilliant voice, and this song is very much loved by CONTROLRadioUK HQ. It's my perfect mix of a Pop/Rock ballad, and these lyrics touch my soul.

I'm not gonna beat around the bushes, this video is weird as hell. But when you get past that, and thinking your PC is on the way out, the music is quite cool and the lyrics do get you thinking.

I think I'm just gonna rename this moody Bank Holiday. Matt Allen has a really great soulful voice. The video doesn't exactly do much, keeping it simple and letting the song speak for itself which I can appreciate.

OK I do actually like this song. It's a little Country, the choir on backing takes the song up a notch which is always wonderful, and I can relate to the songs message. Plus any song that mixes up the genres halfway in is always gonna be good in my book.

CONTROLRadioUK Reviews: Wynonna Earp Season 2 - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Fall TV is fast approaching. Which means the sun is setting on another year of summer TV. Some of it has been fun. Others downright atrocious. Changing things up a little, we’re looking back on Wynonna Earp season 2 and asking what the show got wrong, what it did well, what we hope season 3 will bring, best moments and what we’d really like the show to do differently.

The Good;

I came to the show for the intrigue. Wynonna & Waverly’s sibling relationship is why I stayed. Melanie and Dominique are absolute gold together. Be it the heartbreak, humour or the drama, every scene of theirs is brilliant, and I love that Wynonna & Waverly’s relationship is at the heart of the show. Bringing back Michael Eklund’s ‘Bobo’ for the seasons climax was a stroke of genius. I’ve no particular fondness for the character, but Michael Eklund is a terrific actor, who works so well with the rest of the cast. Also thankful the show didn’t put us through a tedious triangle of Doc/Wynonna/Dolls, although Doc & Dolls friendship doesn’t quite ring true. They could barely tolerate each other in the first season. Yet because they had a bit of what I’d label ‘forced bonding’ with storylines intersecting, I’m supposed to believe they’re now best buddies? When Emily admitted in an interview the only reason Doc had helped Dolls at the beginning of the season, was to make it a fair fight over Wynonna? No thanks. I can also appreciate the show having enough self-awareness to ship off Wynonna’s baby in the finale. Baby storylines do not work well on sci-fi shows. The hands might’ve been forced in featuring the storyline so early in the shows run, but it knows keeping a baby around full-time isn’t practical.

The bad;

Unfortunately, quite a number of things. Storytelling wise my biggest annoyance is moving away from revs of the week, to a more serialized aspect. It doesn’t make sense when the core of the show is killing revenants to break a curse. Season 1 was so enjoyable because it managed to easily manoeuvre the case of the week revenants, character storylines & the big villain that was Bobo. Season 2 character storylines took a massive back-step. An example of this is the cliff-hanger from season 1 in which Bobo told Waverly she wasn’t an Earp. Finishing season 2 the only thing confirmed was Waverly isn’t half rev.

Then there is the show deciding to explore a possession storyline and in with it, embroil itself in the murky waters of consent. For a quick recap season 1 ended with Waverly touching the goo, being possessed, and turning to face Wynonna and Doc before a gun went off. The season 2 opening completely erased that, instead claiming the gun shot had come from somewhere else, and the opening episodes had everyone in the dark on Waverly being possessed.

That everyone included Waverly’s beloved girlfriend Nicole, and the two slept together in one of the seasons early episodes. As viewers, we know that Nicole would never have gotten intimate with Waverly had she known she was possessed. The show was criticized for this and after the storyline concluded, had one scene where Nicole questioned whether Waverly was herself when they did things. Waverly assured Nicole she was, and we as viewers are supposed to accept this face on, and squeal over the supposed cute fest. No. A number of times in the storyline Waverly switched between her normal and possessed self quite suddenly, including during scenes with Nicole, and she was also shown to have gaps in her memory. It’s not cute at all.

Then there is the cheating. Because yes, kissing someone while you’re in a relationship is cheating. No ifs, no buts, just pure, simple, completely needless, cheating, and one Waverly didn’t seem guilty about. The excuse is she and Rosita were seeking comfort with them both going through issues in their relationship. Oh and sitting in a hot tub talking about chemicals in alcohol is quite the turn on. Waverly and Rosita were both fully into that kiss. When you feel guilty about something, the first thing you do the next day is go to them, apologize and sort out your differences. Instead Waverly went to the bar, talked to Rosita about how horrible a message she sent to Nicole was, and had to be talked into seeing Nicole by Rosita. The only critic given to the show is the use of the cheating trope, and criticizing the show for once again making a bisexual character promiscuous. In theory, it’s a good point. However when the show and indeed the fans have spent 99% of the time claiming Waverly is gay or ‘undecided’ on her sexuality, despite spending season 1 in a relationship with Champ and in the alternate universe episode being engaged to Perry? It almost seems like an excuse to demonize bisexuals for the sake of it.

The ugly;

Nicole Haught. Or more specifically, the lack of screen time/storylines/character development. Before season 2 of Wynonna Earp started, crew involved with the show proclaimed that Nicole would be in every episode and a big part of the season. This statement was apparently in response to numerous people asking for spoilers on season 2. The fact this statement came out in the wake of Floriana Lima who plays ‘Maggie Sawyer’ on Supergirl stepping down as a regular to instead recur in season 3? Apparently, a wild coincidence. Sorry but I’ve been on the Internet long enough to know blatant lies when I see it. There was widespread criticism for how little screen time Alex/Maggie got and indeed the character development Maggie got during season 2 of Supergirl. Those involved in Wynonna Earp were trying, and still attempt, to proclaim itself to be the better show. I’m guessing because they need the viewers. Unfortunately, despite these wild promises, Nicole was nothing more than a glorified extra. She was barely involved with anyone that wasn’t named Waverly. Her supposed backstory came in the shape of a never before mentioned wife, showing up out of the blue. There’s never been any real focus on her work as a Police officer. Not exploring her personal life and development friendships with other characters in the show. Unless of course you count that one episode where she and Wynonna went off to a bar.

Supergirl has its faults, but at least Alex & Maggie haven’t so far cheated, their relationship development has been on screen, they shared more than one conversation before becoming partners, Maggie has had more than one scene with the rest of the cast, is involved in the main action, has been given a back story, and they always have each other’s backs.

Not something directly related to the show, but someone please take Emily’s Twitter away. It’s an absolute mess. If she’s not threatening to kill LGBT characters off because the shows not trending, she’s calling people trolls for giving critique, hyping episodes that are completely lacklustre and getting involved with shipping. All of it is completely unprofessional. Do I understand that with social media extremely prevalent in todays society, interacting with fans can bring in new viewers and is free promotion? Absolutely, but there’s still a line that needs to be drawn. For those that bask in the light of Emily Andras, it’d do good to remember she was also involved in Lost Girl for a number of years before Wynonna Earp came to fruition. One look at what the show turned into and reaction from the fanbase towards anything Emily is involved with would urge caution.

Wishlist for Season 3 + What the show could do better?

Better storytelling. Give Nicole an actual backstory, mix her into the main group. The show has a great cast that has great chemistry with each other, use it! Have Waverly & Nicole do something in their relationship outside of kissing. Stop overcomplicating things. Do not use cheap tropes that do nothing to advance the storylines. Stop calling out other shows when you are no better.

Best moments?

Three favourite scenes of the season are Wynonna discovering she’s pregnant, Waverly promising to be there for Wynonna, and Wynonna’s devastation at realizing Waverly had betrayed her. There’s just something so raw and so honest about these scenes, not to mention the superb camera work and directing. Melanie is an absolutely tremendous talent who really does deserve all the awards, and just works so well with Dominique. Favourite quote would have to be Waverly’s exchange in the premiere where she’s asked if she knows who Kanye West is and says ‘I’m British not elderly’.

Wynonna Earp has fast become one of my favourite summer shows. That’s not really saying much considering the limited offerings available for summer TV. I hope season 3 is a massive improvement on what season 2 had to offer, but Emily’s post finale interviews aren’t filled with hope.

CONTROLRadioUK Interviews Samantha Benjamin

Samantha Benjamin is a woman of many talents. Soon off on a new adventure at University, she is releasing her debut book 'I Am This Girl; Tales of Youth' on the 26th September which you can order : here. Alternatively you can read the book here.

It is sure to be the first of many. She is also a songwriter, producer, works on various websites, and her first short film 'The Cemetery' is coming out in October. Recently Samantha sat down with our CEO Trisha for a talk on her book, what inspired it, and gave us an exclusive first look at the cover along with an excerpt from the first chapter.

When Phil and Natalie first reveal that they want to move to Morpington, Tammy isn’t thrilled. It’s up North. Tammy hates up North. With her friendships at school strained, living with the daily fear of bumping into Lorraine in the corridors, and the scars of the not so distant past continuing to haunt her? Tammy decides up North isn’t so bad. A fresh start is just what she needs. Somewhere no-one knows her and she can be whoever she wants to be.

Where Tammy goes though, trouble is never far behind. Doors are unlocked forcing Tammy to face up to things she’s long tried to hide from. It’s not long before Tammy’s life is turned upside down, and she’s knee-deep in rivalry, jealousy and danger. As the dust settles Tammy begins to wonder; is it the place that is the problem or her?

Chapter One – The Beginning

Whenever you move onto a new place you call it an adventure. Whatever happens, happens. It’s all part of the journey of self-discovery. We learn new things about ourselves, embrace the culture and surroundings. Question aspects of yourself you weren’t even aware existed, and in years to come wonder if any of it would’ve happened if you hadn’t moved.

“Are you ready?” “As I’ll ever be”.

When Natalie first approached Tammy about moving from London to Morpington, she laughed in her mother’s face. It wasn’t as if she didn’t like the idea of moving. They’d done it when Tammy moved up from Nursery to Primary School. Tammy loved travelling. She was always the first to sign up for school trips, and somewhat enjoyed the trips out with her dad. She liked the train and bus journey’s, looking out the window at the farms, rivers, horses and sheep eating grass, hillsides and mountains. It was all fun.

The part she enjoyed most though was knowing she’d eventually go back home to her room. She could look out her bedroom window at the Mew’s mixed cobbled road. The houses with white garages were on her left gleaming in the moonlight. On her right were the wooden garden doors of different shapes and sizes, which belonged to the residents of Queens Road.

There was an open white paved walkway on Queens road. If you walked straight the way down on the left was a dingy, smelly subway. It connected to the far left side of Mulls road, which was home to the local underground station, shopping centre and various bus stops connecting to different parts of London. There was always a man standing in the subway, with his guitar, singing joyfully away for a few bits of change.

Facing Queens Road was the Traynark Estate. With its black towering blocks that stretched over 20 floors, small green area known for extra curriculum activities next to the park and across from the community centre, and uninviting roads cutting off everywhere you looked to places unknown, it was not a very welcoming place.
Tammy on the occasion attempted to hang out with the kids from the Estate in the playground. They’d go for a spin on the round wheel, close their eyes and the wheel turned as fast as the children could run around it, and whoever was able to get up non dizzy and nauseous was crowned the winner. But the children didn’t much like her.

She’d moved into the Mews off the Estate at the age of 5, coming with Natalie from a previous Estate an hour away. Natalie was very cautious over letting Tammy hang with the kids due to the Estate’s bad influences. Tammy spent most of her time in her room, riding up and down the Mews on her bike or playing tennis against the back of the houses wall.

She only really ventured onto the Estate to go to the Newsagents or Convenience store on the main road. The Estate kids took this as Tammy believing she was better than them and took great joy in airing their feelings.

At the bottom of the Mews were overgrown trees and a small area of mud that was cut off from view. Tammy enjoyed sitting there with her bike, watching the vehicles speed round the roundabout, with the water tower illuminating the area after dark.
There was nothing better for Tammy on a sleepless night than staring out her window at the water tower, looking at the Mews lit up by the bright orange street lamp. Hearing people arrive home from nights out. Watching cats dart across the Mews as fast as they could, and the Foxes riffle through the bins for food.
It was homely.

Morpington on the other hand was not.

The sun disappeared, replaced by grey clouds, drizzle rain and gloom as the train sped past the Countryside. Though there was no way she was going through with it, Tammy agreed to view the house to give mum her thoughts. Natalie claimed she wanted a change of scenery and Phil had been offered a job, making the move perfect.

The reality they believed Tammy ignorant to was Phil, having grown up in the North, wanted to move back as he was homesick. Natalie initially refused being a London girl, and not wanting to disrupt Tammy’s life. As time wore on, the arguments between her and Phil grew more intense and Natalie caved for the sake of their sanity.

Leading up to the visit, things weren’t good for Tammy at School. Once again, she was arguing with her best friends Sonia Brown and Kristie Lee. That wasn’t exactly breaking news since it was rare for them to ever go a week without arguing.

Kristie had piercing blue puppy dog eyes, silky long straight blonde hair, slim build and was always so caring with a bubbly personality to match. All she had to do was look at you and any anger you felt evaporated. Sonia always had judgement in her sturdy brown eyes, black hair usually tied back either in mini plaits courtesy of her Aunts or a round knot, she was slim build and taller than Kristie and Tammy, which was a surprise given how much Tammy towered over mum.
Tammy and Natalie got off the train, greeted by a soaking wet grey platform, fresh smell of urine in the air, Tammy knew Morpington was not for her.

There was vomit from a pint too many the previous night on the staircase to the main entrance. White tiled flooring made up the station floor, with red and orange bricks making up the walls and lamp lights matching the transparent glass ceiling. Grey clouds passed them by as Tammy stared at the ceiling.

On the far-right side of the station through double brown doors was the narrow rectangular closed ticket office. Two self-service machines and various timetables were by one set of black transparent automatic doors. In the far-left corner on the other side of the station was a coffee shop and newsagents.

Busy station floors, having to hold onto mum, or extremely reluctantly dad, as they frantically dashed to get to the train on time had become Tammy’s forte. With only 5 people keeping them company, Morpington did not have that problem.

A small queue of people stood on the pavement outside the main entrance for a taxi. The outside of the station had the same ceiling, roof and orange-red brick interface as inside. Only difference was drops of rain leaking through the roof and hitting Tammy’s forehead, as rain and high winds battered them.

The people battled to keep their umbrella’s and stay dry, they chatted away in a thick Northern accent Tammy could barely understand. Yet they peculiarly eyed Tammy and Natalie, aware of the fact they had outsiders in their presence.

After what felt like an eternity, a driver finally turned his engine on and they rushed inside.

The driver looked like a tramp you’d see down Oxford Circus on an early Sunday morning; his overgrown black hair stretched through his brown baseball cap. He had a beard longer than Father Christmas.

Had he not been wearing a card that stated he was a licensed driver, Tammy would’ve called the Police. His clothes were badly worn in and his car smelt the way they Station looked. Tammy had thought Morpington was bad, but she hadn’t expected this. The journey to the house wasn’t much better.
“Aint seen ya before luv” The driver grunted in his thick Northern accent as he turned the taxi onto the main road and drove down toward the shopping centre “Visitin or lookin fa long term prospect?” the driver enquired, eying Tammy and Natalie in the back seat through the overhead mirror.
Tammy thought his attention would’ve been better served on the road.

“My partner and I came here a few months ago, to look at a house” Natalie politely replied with her London accent shining through, looking out the window at the traffic amongst them as the rain simmered “We’ve found a nice one but my daughter gets the final vote” Natalie explained.
“See” the taxi driver disappointedly noted the word ‘partner’ and turned his attention back to the road.

Men hitting on mum wasn’t anything new to Tammy.

It constantly happened when they were together, Natalie often annoyingly mistaken for Tammy’s older sister. With her strawberry red hair, hazel eyes and regular workouts, Natalie was in good shape.

The taxi grinded to a halt by an alleyway by the top of Clersham Road. Natalie paid the driver, Tammy carefully stepped back out into the pouring rain and took in her surroundings.

Had the road sign not read ‘Clersham Road’ and beside her a bus stop, with a small set of shops occupying what looked to be former Tudor houses on the main road, Tammy would’ve believed the driver had taken them on a round trip of Arnay Rise.

There was absolutely no difference between where she was standing and what they’d driven past, giving the feeling of being trapped in a labyrinth.
The alleyway was quiet, overgrown hedges making up the top of it.

Walking past overflown, and kicked over bins, Tammy and Natalie were greeted by more houses, grouped together. The only difference here was the houses were lined together in a square shape.

Directly ahead of them lay a row of 4 houses grouped together, with more alleyways separating them from neighbouring houses.
Tammy wasn’t impressed.

That opinion didn’t change when they came to a standstill by a small brown wooden gate, overgrown tree once again looming over them on the front lawn. The grass had obviously not been cut in months, trying to expand onto the pathway which led to the brown front door. The brown window paint on the window was cracked and faded in, parts of the window works on the ground underneath it, electric cupboard broke and the bricks of the house were a depressing brown.
Inside wasn’t any better.

Whilst Tammy was making sure to take in every detail of the kitchen, Natalie was busy negotiating with the man for the table. She was willing to pay him money, but the guy refused to take it. He claimed that it’d never fit into their kitchen which Tammy agreed with, and it’d been there since he’d moved into the house. That Tammy didn’t buy.

Whilst the upstairs was disappointing, the downstairs was certainly bigger than what they had in London.
Plus, it had a front and back garden which Tammy had always wanted for herself, as most of the properties Simon had lived in had them though they’d been shared and the neighbours weren’t friendly.

When he lived at Middlesone Road and Tammy was playing tennis in the garden, to quell a few hours of boredom during a rather sunny day that Simon had dedicated to horse racing, she hit it too high.

The ball ended up stuck in the black round pipe of the garage that was on the other side of the garden. Simon ignored her calls and desperately wanting her ball back, Tammy decided to climb onto the pipe.

She used the glass greenhouse that was home to plants, amongst other things, to support her weight.
She successfully managed to retrieve her ball and threw it onto the ground below her. Unfortunately, on her way back down, Tammy fell off the pipe and into the greenhouse.

The neighbour saw from his kitchen window and marched downstairs. Whilst Tammy lay bruised and bleeding in agony, the neighbour berated her for ruining his plants.
When Tammy told Simon of her fall, he didn’t pay any attention, merely telling Tammy not to block the TV. Tammy trudged off to the bedroom in search of a first aid kit to clear her cuts up, not sure why she’d expected anything else.

If it came to confrontation, or accepting any form of responsibility, Simon hid behind someone else to win the fight.

He’d done it since he was a child, where Uncle Billy would fight his battles. Sometimes Tammy even stepped in, ordering the person to back off and leave her dad alone. Yet when it came to old boys threatening to take Tammy’s sweet money? Simon walked away.

His only interest was in horse racing, gambling money he didn’t have and working all the shifts he could get to pay his mountain of debts.

In Primary School, Tammy joined the girl’s football team, partially because of how much she loved football, and to please him.

In that sense, it worked. When she visited his flat at the weekend, instead of being glued to the horse racing channel, he took her for a kick-about atop the local hill. It was peaceful with the sun shining through the blue skies. River was flowing beside them as they made their way up. Lying on the moist, freshly cut grass and staring at the sky took Tammy to a new place of tranquillity. Tammy stood in between their coats making up goal posts, Simon taught her different techniques and reflexes.

As soon as something more interesting came along however, Tammy didn’t exist.

Tammy was always perplexed over what about her dad women found attractive.

He was in his 40’s but looked to be 60. His short black hair had ceased to exist over the years, with no amount of hair products able to stave off the baldness forever. He refused to regularly shave, leaving a grey tussle on his face. His mouth was made up of false teeth, he took great delight with keeping by Tammy’s bedside and frightening the crap out of her on awaking. He didn’t keep himself in shape at all, growing quite the beer belly over the years, which his love of red meat and out of date food didn’t help with. He was extremely unhygienic, often making Tammy gag.

Simon made the move to Morpington 6 months before them. Tammy and Natalie stayed at his flat in Hykers Green for the weekend, so Tammy could attend a School Interview. It was just up the road from the Fields, tram stop on the street below and bus links to the School 20 minutes away.

On the Monday, Tammy and Natalie made their way down the windy Beacon’s-Mill-Road to Hayton’s Road where they caught the 77 bus.

Tammy could see why the school was so eager for new students. Even from a distance, it had the look and feel of a prison.

Suddenly Tammy was feeling as if her current school wasn’t so bad.

The first thing that caught Tammy’s eye about Morpington School for Girls was the lights. Tall green street lights that loomed over the school.
Then there were the large overgrown trees. They covered the near right of the school, next to the steel green gate that separated the school from the field. It hid part of the corner from plain sight and had a murky feeling to it.

The rear part of the school that accompanied that area didn’t help. The window panelling was white, but you couldn’t see in or out of the windows. Only small clusters of chatter let you know the people inside were alive and well. The bricks were a horrible brown colour, which matched the school’s dated feel.
The forest at the back of the school, under the grey clouds, made Tammy feel rather fearful.

That wasn’t improved when they reached the school’s main entrance, a green steel gate.

There were no security guards checking personnel. No adviser waiting to greet you and escort you to reception.

Just a small open green space with a set of wooden benches, overgrown trees, and steel green gates running along the front side of the school. Definitely like a prison.

On Natalie and Tammy’s arrival, the receptionist was quick on her windows 95 computer, with the brick screen sitting atop the wall beside her. She looked to be in her 50’s and was dressed in a plain uniform made up of a white shirt, black skirts, boots to match, and as if she’d been in the job 20yrs too long. Like the main corridor, the walls were covered in notices about the school, various trophies, school uniform and safety information.

Students continued to pour into the front of the school’s ground, some passing the reception on their way to class, Tammy looked out a them petrified.
“Tammy!” Natalie hissed breaking Tammy out of her daydream “Over here!” Natalie barked.

The Principal stood in the doorway that connected the reception with the School’s main corridor. He looked to be a pleasant enough man. Tammy guessed him to be in his 40’s, most of his hair gone leaving behind the old grey one, round spec glasses, and the standard Principal dress code of a grey suit with black shoes.

“I hope you didn’t have any trouble getting here” The Principal politely enough said to Natalie as Tammy made her way over to him “Not at all” Natalie politely replied and sat down on the chair.

“Right then” the Principal charmingly rubbed his hands together to relax the scared expression on Tammy’s face as she stood beside him, hands in her pocket and eyes glued to the floor “Let’s get going!” the Principal excitedly finished. It wasn’t reciprocated by Tammy.

The corridor was empty with everyone thankfully at registration. The left of the corridor had 2 workshop classes next to each other, cooking and wood-shop, and a Chemistry class. Opposite them on the right were large windows, looking out onto wooden benches, the rear courtyard and the field. There were a few trees and grass hill running down beside the left side of the school building. Looking closely at the field, Tammy noticed the green steel gates were broken up by a railing that had a small keyhole. Tammy guessed the school used the field as part of sports day, considering how small the gym appeared.

At the end of the corridor lay the library, a small set of stone stairs which led to the rear door, corridor and through a set of wooden brown doors, the stone staircase that took you upstairs.
With no windows down this side of the corridor, the only light that broke off from the marble walls were led tube lights.

Judging by the security detectors in the doorway, Tammy guessed the library had a problem with books being stolen.

Tammy sat at one of the tables at the back of the library. The Principal took Maths and English papers from the reception and handed them to Tammy, along with a pen and pencil. He explained she had two hours to take the tests and then he’d be back for her.

Occasionally girls walked into the library, but Tammy tried to ignore their presence. She breezed through the English paper and did her usual guess the answer when it came to Maths.

She figured numbers was a game of probability; why stress when you could write the first number that popped up in your head? It’d worked on previous tests, though her Teachers were never impressed.

The Principal gave Tammy a tour of the School and grounds. He reasoned that knowing where everything was before she properly joined, would make the experience less intimidating.

It had the opposite effect.

Every time the Principal opened the classroom doors, everyone fell silent, all eyes on Tammy as the Principal explained she would be joining the school in September. Tammy weakly smiled politely, feeling their eyes burning into her soul.
Tammy was glad when the time came to re-join Natalie in the reception and leave. That was soon replaced by crippling pain, as Natalie informed her it was now time to tell Sonia and Kristie her news.

Tammy had known this was coming. It wasn’t like she could just disappear into thin air, and casually call to say she’d gone, though the thought had occurred.
Over the next month, Natalie and Phil made arrangements with the removal company, using the same one as Simon, collected boxes from local shops and packed the house up.

On the second to last day of term, Tammy walked out of Spanish class to be greeted by the extremely unexpected sight of Lorraine, leant up against the wall. Tammy looked sideways at the other students passing her, assuming that Lorraine would call one of them out the crowd to join her.
She didn’t.

The corridor quietened, Lorraine saw Tammy, rooted to the spot by the Spanish class opposite her and approached her.
Tammy desperately wanted to run out of one of the side doors, or down one of the corridors to freedom. People who could act as eyewitnesses, not that it’d ever stopped Lorraine before.

No matter how happy she was in her friendship with Kristie and Sonia, and the confidence that’d given her to no longer fear the school gates, every time she came across Lorraine she wanted to bolt.

“Can we talk?” Lorraine asked in a friendly tone that completely took Tammy by surprise “Fine, I guess” Tammy mumbled unsure hands rooted to her pocket “But this better be quick. Kristie and Son know I’m always first out of class, they’ll be wondering where I am soon” Tammy warned.

She wanted Lorraine to know she had people at school now who cared about her and her wellbeing. That she couldn’t take Tammy round the back of the Library, and beat her until her mood subsided, because no-one noticed if Tammy was running late.

Tammy and Lorraine walked to the end of the corridor and onto the North Wing of the school.

Lorraine opened the door to the nearest stairwell and held her hand out for Tammy to lead the way. Not in the mood to walk up more stairs, Tammy walked down the stairs to the basement. There she turned back to a following Lorraine, several thoughts going through her head.

“So” Tammy commented with beading eyes “What do you want?” Tammy asked with an air of irritation.

“To apologise” Lorraine answered eyes squared to the floor. Tammy couldn’t do anything except chuckle with disbelief.

“Are we seriously doing this again?” Tammy angrily queried at a loss “I told you last time; I’m not interested and there’s nothing you can do or say that’ll make me be your friend again” Tammy reiterated looking Lorraine square in the face “You didn’t just make me feel like my life wasn’t worth living, you encouraged me to kill myself and attempted to kill me” Tammy reminded Lorraine and she shot up in anger at the accusation.

“How many times do I have to tell you what happened in the pool was a mistake?” Lorraine snapped and Tammy stepped back away from her cautiously “I thought you’d be able to grab hold of the panel” Lorraine insisted.

“You know I can’t swim well!” Tammy raged “I was screaming for help and what did you guys do?” Tammy put her hands in the air tearful as the memory swept over her “Stood back, laughing, enjoying the party. If Miss hadn’t come along when she did, I would’ve died” Tammy grudgingly spat.
“I wouldn’t have let that happen” Lorraine vehemently claimed.

Tammy didn’t believe a word of it.

“I’m really trying to change this time” Lorraine said with all the sincerity she could muster “Get better. Deal with things, instead of taking them out on everyone” Lorraine continued, inching ever closer to Tammy.

Rejecting Lorraine’s efforts, Tammy brushed past her and walked to the top of the stairwell, stopping by the door.
Tammy looked back, Lorraine stood on the spot, watching Tammy’s every move tinged with regret.

“Yeah” Tammy took great joy in rubbing in “This is what you’ve done to me” Tammy finished with a quiver and Lorraine walked back up the stairs to her.
“I am sorry Tam” Lorraine replied desperate for Tammy to believe her “An I know it’s a lot to ask” Lorraine acknowledged “But do you ever think you can forgive me?” Lorraine asked with hopeful eyes which Tammy greeted with stone cold eyes “You’re right, it is” Tammy spitefully answered.
Downhearted by Tammy’s reply and general cold attitude towards her, Lorraine shook her head in acceptance and opened the door to the corridor.

Tammy immediately put her hand on Lorraine’s to stop her walking away.

“Why do you want my forgiveness so badly?” Tammy was dying to know and Lorraine looked at her deep in thought.
“I’ve hurt a lot of people” Lorraine admitted “I don’t mean it” Lorraine added and looked to the floor ashamed “But the things I’ve done to you?” Lorraine shook her head sickened by her actions “I can’t” Lorraine defiantly looked up refusing to allow her head to go back there.
Tammy was pleased to see Lorraine had found her conscience again, even if it was too late for her
“My Counsellor says if I want to get better, I have to start by acknowledging the worst in myself” Lorraine explained straightening herself back up.
“I’m gonna try not to take that offensively, and concentrate on the fact you’re seeing a Counsellor again” Tammy replied opting to take the high road “After last time, I thought you’d given up completely” Tammy murmured.
“Realized I couldn’t go on the way I was, so I started again a few weeks ago” Lorraine revealed “I’m pleased for you” Tammy genuinely replied impressed by Lorraine’s determination.
“Just one step” Lorraine dismissed, refusing to give herself credit, “I’m not expecting us to be friends again. I don’t want you to forget everything that’s happened” Lorraine stated matter of fact “I just needed you to know I’m sorry and trying to change” Lorraine finished, back to her normal chill self.

Tammy cut through the back streets on her way home. She stopped at the park by her old Primary School, and sat on a bench until sunset. Walked along David’s Road passing the Estate’s that’d been so familiar to her such a short time ago, and made her way up William Street onto St David’s Road. Passed the convenience store which had been a regular haunt of hers since she was 5 years old, and the newsagent she used to get the early morning paper, or milk, for mum from.

Tammy came to a stop at the top of the Mews exhausted. Putting her key in the black front door, Tammy turned it and the door opened, boxes greeting everywhere Tammy’s eyes laid.

From the living room, Phil asked Tammy if she was alright, and said that Natalie was in the bedroom.

Tammy didn’t issue a response, instead dragging her legs up the stairs to pass out in her half packed room.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

My favorite song off the album, which is quite something because it's an album of perfection. Multiple listens later I still absolutely adore it, glued to my playlist forever. I am a massive fan of songs that contain multiple genres and start out one way, and end up somewhere entirely different. It shows the versatility in the Artist and Producers behind them. 'Solutions' starts off as a moody ballad, goes up in the chorus and the end is just fabulous and pleasing on the ears. Strangely enough what makes this song so good is probably the backing beats and vocals. It just takes the song to another level. I have featured Vérité on the 5 Picks before, very much hoping that her album would sound as good as the singles suggested, and it has completely surpassed expectations, which I'm extremely thankful for. 'Somewhere Between' is available to buy and stream now. You should totally take up one or both of those options.

Another faultless song. Has a minor sample in the beginning which I can't quite place but I love this. Yes there are undertones of those EDM beats I will forever detest, but Gabrielle Aplin is doing something different with them. Compared to some of her previous offerings this song also goes somewhere, with good enough lyrics, and you can basically enjoy dancing the day away with this old number. Gabrielle Aplin is an English singer/songwriter and the EP 'Avalon' will be released on the 15th September.

In order to do these picks, I have to listen to a lot of music. Confession time; It's not always great. Like 70% of the time it is terrible and my ears hate me for subjecting them to such horrors. But amidst all of that? I come across some true gems and XYLØ is one of them. In order to fully understand this video you have to have watched Alive. Choosing which out of these 2 songs to feature here was extremely tricky. They're both excellent songs and videos in their own rights, but again, I can only have one and this video is just so clever. It takes you out of the box, makes you think and the video really fits with the lyrics which I love. It's truly an impressive piece of work, and the hand-held footage gives me flashbacks to 90's videos which is never a bad thing. XYLØ are an American electronic music duo.

I am under orders to keep this strictly professional and not fan-girl too much. That's an extremely hard ask but I am nothing if not a trier. Aly & AJ are back people! And this song is completely and utterly awesome. I have had 3 tracks on repeat on Spotify since Friday and this is one of them. It has been a very long 10 years since Aly & AJ last released music, but this song is totally worth it. Has a nice 80's vibe to it which the rest of CONTROLRadioUK HQ love, and when we're all loving a song together? It's basically Christmas come early. A lot of the time when Artists take a break from music and come out with a new sound, it can seem fake and as though they're simply doing it to keep up with the trend. Not here. 'Take Me' is a natural progression from their previous music. In a way it's like 'Tears on the Dancefloor' from Steps - has a fresh enough sound to bring in new fans, but still has that Aly & AJ vibe to it that old fans can dig into.

The 2nd song that has been on repeat. Why this is not officially available on Youtube yet I do not know. Considering these fan videos are getting over a million views? Seems a little silly. Over the years Little Mix have grown on me. However what I love about this song is the natural mix of the languages and the music. Compared to some of the duets they've done which have felt very much tagged on for publicity, this duet feels natural and I completely dig it. I've listened to the original version of this and whilst it is good, this remix takes it to a whole other level. CNCO are a Latin American boy band and Little Mix are of course a British girl group.

This might just win the sexiest video of the year award! Sean has a fantastic voice and this song is one heck of a jam. Sean Smith comes from the Energise Records family, and has been a mainstayer on the CONTROLRadioUK charts since 'Turn Me On' first came out.

If you're not breaking the replay button, I am seriously judging your taste in music.

Quite often I am told a song is totally me. In this case that is completely and utterly true and I have no complaints. 'Gold Days' is quite the chilled out jam which I have no problem with whatsoever, and the video has a very retro feel to it which just makes me long for the beach.

This is a nice, moody jam, perfect for those long rainy nights. Glitch Code's album 'Gifted_Damage' is out now.

Another really good moody number, and I do love performance music videos, they add so much to the emotion of the song.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

This is such a great song. The drums in the chorus really elevate the song (no surprise when they're provided by Josh Dun of Twenty One Pilots). The song has a bit of a Western vibe with the chorus taking it into Rock territory, which is an interesting combination. Lyrically this song doesn't exactly offer much. It's not a fresh take on anything, but the way Lights take this on is unique. Having listened to a couple of her songs and watched numerous music videos, I actually think Lights is quite a unique artist. For someone who likes comic books, having an artist incorporate comic strips into their music video is interesting. It turns a dark, dowdy music video which doesn't have much going on into something special. Lights is a Canadian musician, singer and songwriter, and you can pre-order the album 'Skin & Earth', which comes out on the 22nd September, now.

Can you believe P!nk's last album was released in 2012? I was a little shocked by that. It really doesn't feel like that long ago. But she is back, with a brand new album 'Beautiful Trauma' that you can pre-order now, and released on the 13th October. I've been listening to P!nk's music since I was around about 11/12. Not all of it is my cup of tea, especially the early years, but I do enjoy a great deal of it. Lyrically 'What About Us' is OK, but it has the same message that a number of P!nk songs have, only they've been better. Musically this doesn't go anywhere either. Listening to this multiple times I kept waiting for the song to eventually explode, because that's what P!nk songs tend to do. But it's just that same old EDM, tropical beat, I am completely done with hearing and that's it. No explosion, no change of note or direction, no finale that sends a chill down your spine because it's so good. After a 5 year wait for fresh solo material, 'What About Us' is a disappointment and I can only hope the album is better.

OK this is another song with a crappy tropical beat this time, and doesn't go anywhere at all musically. However it is quite an interesting song lyrically. I like when songs make me think about the message they're encompassing. Yes it follows that simple old rhyming couplet I'm always complaining about, and I realize I have a number of issues with songs that are being produced at the moment. The world is in quite a depressive state right now. Art is supposed to be where you can escape to, but when every song looks and sounds the same, and movies/TV are all about remakes and spin-offs? It's extremely disappointing. But lyrically this song is another interesting take on the break-up genre. Usually it's all about the devastation one feels when someone's broken up with them. Finding faults in yourself to justify why it's happened, and hope that you can fix yourself so that someone else will love you. This song turns that on its head. The person who has orchestrated the break-up is the one filled with darkness. It's a darkness acknowledged by their former partner, along with the devastation at the break-up, but refusing to hold themselves responsible. It's a wise lesson many could learn. Echosmith are an Indie/Pop band from California.

Aside from this video making me fear my PC was up the spout, this is a really good song. The message of itself is clear, and one we could all do with taking on board. Musically this is also something a bit different which I am overjoyed with. It has a build-up that actually goes somewhere, but the music doesn't overpower the song or its message. I could seriously do without such a weird video though. By now Foster The People are a band you are probably familiar with so no need for introductions, and their album 'Sacred Hearts Club' is out now.

Is this just another excuse for me to talk about how much I love an album? Why yes, it is indeed. But 'Hoodie' is also a good song. Not the best I've ever heard and certainly not the best on the album (that title belongs to 'Like Lovers Do' which is in my top 10 songs of the year list). If you haven't found an old item of clothing in the aftermath of a break-up and been overwhelmed by memories of what was once? Quite honestly you haven't experienced a break-up. I like the effects used in the video and Rena Lovelis is certainly a lead singer who knows how to emote. Very important when a music video requires a bit of acting, otherwise the whole story of the video can fall short. Hey Violet are an American Rock band and their album 'From The Outside' is available now. I absolutely love it and cannot recommend it highly enough.

CONTROLRadioUK Reflects On Orphan Black

When Orphan Black hit the screen in 2013, it was a show like no other. You couldn’t describe it, but there was something magical about it, that had you hooked from the first minute. Its influence spread far and wide across the Internet with many, including myself, picking up on the show from word of mouth. I had no idea what it was. Just a show a lot of people spoke out, and from glimpses of the show I saw I was hooked. Within days of the finale airing, I had the whole season binged and was convincing others to watch it. The show had the potential to be legendary. Fast forward to 2017 and there are two camps of Orphan Black fans; ones that will love the show in spite of its flaws, and ones who cannot see past them. When you have a first season as good as Orphan Black’s, it is near on impossible to repeat that success. Either the show disappears into its own hype, or its been placed on a pedestal so high, it’s impossible to match it. Orphan Black is a rare show that falls into both categories.

The first signs that all was not well with the show came in the form of the castor clones. Viewers were drawn to Orphan Black because of the Leda clones. Or more specifically Tatiana Maslanly. Or even more specifically than that, because the show was centered on women. Television is overloaded with shows that have male characters at the forefront. Orphan Black was different to that, as was Tatiana, successfully playing multiple characters at once, and giving them all their own unique identities. Nothing about them from physical appearance to personality was the same. When you watched the show, you were taken aback by the reality this was one actress playing multiple people. She was that good and it was no surprise people were clamoring for her to win an Emmy. Ari Millen is an OK enough actor but he’s not Tatiana. He and the castor clones are not what got people invested in the show. It was all about why Beth had killed herself, Sarah’s journey in discovering others who looked like her, the conspiracy around the clones including friends and loved ones who couldn’t be trusted, and the cat and mouse game.

The second sign came in Delphine’s ‘demise’ and the rise of Shay. Due to apparent scheduling conflicts beginning in season 3 that arose from signing onto another show, Evelyne Brochu’s role was downsized. This was setup at the end of season 2 when Rachel sent Delphine off to Germany. Delphine’s relationship with clone Cosima had become the front and center of the show. People originally came for the clones and stayed ‘for the gays’. There had been betrayal in season 1 but they’d worked past this and in season 2, their relationship blossomed as they ‘scienced together’. But with said conflicts towards the end of the season, angst came into play and at the beginning of season 3, Delphine ended the relationship. It was supposed to be something that was sad, but it really wasn’t. The reasons for the break-up were farcical to say the least, and giving the audience the rise of Shay as a consolation prize? Insulting. Television producers seem to be under the impression they can create an LGBT couple for the audience to fawn over, bathe in the praise, and then at their choosing replace members of that couple with a substitute and still lap it up. Because television producers see LGBT characters and the couples they create as being easily disposable and dispensable. The audience is so desperate for representation, they’ll take any crumb you give them.

So season 3 we had the castor clones in full force, many nonsensical story-lines as more and more new characters came into play, and those female clones that had helped give the show they buzz it had faded into the background. At the end of the season Delphine briefly returned, now portraying the role of the psychotic ex-girlfriend. She had it out for Shay because she was jealous of her relationship with Cosima. Nothing to do with trying to do her job in keeping the clones safe. Nope, all about jealousy, which the show lapped up, and the in the finale, had Delphine shot and her fate left unknown. It was an extremely dirty move that was greeted with the derision it deserved. The ‘bury your gays’ trope has been around for years. The producers knew exactly what they were doing when Delphine was shot. Their attempts at facing the backlash were to play coy, refusing to confirm Delphine’s fate one way or another, and that was a line followed by the actors. Previously speaking up in support of the LGBT community, they were now dismissive of fears, asking fans to watch the show because they enjoyed it, not because of particular characters, and acting as though all of the attention over Delphine’s fate was insulting.

As season 4 started, Delphine’s fate was still a hot topic. Fans wanted to hope against hope that Orphan Black would bring her back. The attention got too much for the producers who realized they had messed up. Barely getting away with the relationship interchange, Shay was written off, and Cosima spent the majority of season 4 remembering how much she had previously loved Delphine, and mourning her departure. The show also began to cut back on the castor clones, and overdose of new characters, instead bringing the focus back to the Leda clones. By the time the season ended, Delphine was revealed to be alive and barely well, Cosima ended up on an island that was coincidentally where Delphine was also based and they were reunited. Sarah was badly wounded during another confrontation with Rachel, Alison, Donnie and Helena made for an interesting combination, and the show was sort of back on track. Not by much though, which is probably why the 5th season was confirmed to be the last.

I came back into the 5th season having previously not watched the show since season 2. All the above is written based off opinions from people who have stuck by this sinking ship from the beginning to the bitter end. I really don’t think it says a lot about a show that a person can watch a 4th season, and fit so seamlessly back into the shows rhythm. I was supposed to not know who half these characters were, the story, panic thinking I had to go back and watch 2 seasons of the show for everything to make sense. Nope. I slotted seamlessly back in and watched the whole of season 5 without much confusion. That’s how completely pointless season 3 and season 4 of Orphan Black were.

Season 5 has the castor clones more or less completely instinct. As a person who gave up watching solely because they were introduced, and therefore stepping away from the shows original message? I was completely ok with that. Delphine & Cosima were still united together in the season opener. Cosima overcome with relief that her love was indeed alive. The explanation as to how Delphine survived being shot and ended up on the island was again non-sensical. But she was back, the focus was back on the leda clones, the convoluted cast list had been completely chopped, and we were back to the basic storytelling that had gripped us in the first place. All was well again.

Except it wasn’t. In the second episode M.K is brutally murdered by Ferdinand. Why? Because he’s angry with Rachel for shutting him out, and since he can’t kill her, he’ll just kill a surrogate. The brutality of M.K’s death, not to mention the pointlessness of it all, again drew criticism. Again the producers attempted to defend themselves, and again it fell on deaf ears. Then due to our beloved friend ‘scheduling issues’, Delphine had to again depart. Dedicated fans who were up to date on behind the scenes information didn’t find her temporary exit so alarming these days, as this information had already been revealed and the producers had confirmed it. Despite the fact Cosima had arrived on the island with Delphine being told she wouldn’t be allowed to stay? She was, and soon Cosima was back to doing what she does best – sticking her nose where she really shouldn’t and getting into trouble. She wanted to know what exactly was happening on the island. It proclaimed to be an island of miracles, it really wasn’t. After her battle with Rachel, Sarah ended up back home and dry, except she wasn’t . Rachel wanted Kira and Kira wanted Rachel, so she could discover just why she was the way she was. This was a plot that lasted all of 3 episodes, and was completely pointless. Unless you count Kira eventually realizing Rachel didn’t really want to play Auntie, and was instead using her as a guinea pig for PT’s plans, which caused Kira to realize that mummy always knows best. In which case that plot was completely crucial.

The main mystery of the final season was PT and the island. Except it wasn’t a mystery, because it was completely obvious that PT was a fraud. After going through an extremely painful dinner, in which the aftermath caused Delphine & Cosima to give each other some home truths, Cosima confronted PT over playing God and ended up locked in a cage. Where was Delphine when this was happening you ask? Off on a plane to somewhere to do a job for PT, which was actually a cover for her joining Felix and his sister in following the money, that Mrs.S who was secretly working with Delphine hoped would lead to the big guns behind PT.

Confused much? I don’t blame you.

So Cosima ends up locked in a cage, is eventually let out and exposes PT’s lies to the island. They promptly turn against him, whilst Cosima leaves the island with Charlotte on a boat. Delphine I’m guessing was informed about this over one of those skype calls the show loves to have. But wait, I haven’t mentioned Alison and Helena in a while. That’s my bad. Alison was off in her completely pointless existent, doing completely pointless things, because over 5 years the show hasn’t cared enough about her to have her do non pointless things that are worth mentioning. Oh and Helena disappeared off to some Church to give birth, but the Church wasn’t really that secret considering Gracie founds her. Who is Gracie you ask? Don’t worry, in the next episode she’s dead so it doesn’t matter.

To be honest half of the stuff that happened in this final season doesn’t matter. The big mysterious camp is abandoned within episodes. PT is somehow left standing until the final episode where sarah kills him. Coady is brought back as a Susan replacement, and is just as horrible and pointless as she has always been. Because of the show really can’t let go of the castor clones, original castor Mark is brought back in after his brother dies, and is eventually killed by Coady once he’s served his purpose. Alison and Donnie return towards the end of the season, with Alison having had a complete makeover, but still completely pointless, and Donnie just hovers everywhere. Mrs.S and Delphine’s team up is completely wasted due to most of it happening off screen. In fact Delphine’s whole story-line in this final season is wasted because it’s mostly off screen. Everything important to this shows final season is off screen. What is on screen is PT being a mysterious crook we don’t care about, Ferdinand being Ferdinand until he and Mrs.S kill each other, and Rachel finally coming to the realization that all she’s ever been and will be in the eyes of PT and company is an experiment.

Coming to the final episode what are we left with? Oh yes, a 20 minute climax which has Sarah finally kill PT, Art & Helena teaming up to kill Coady before Art plays midwife and helps Sarah deliver Helena’s babies. For the last ever 20 minutes of the show? Well it’s brushing past consequences to all the killing and double crossing. Instead we’ve jumped forward sometime to the future which the show doesn’t bother telling us, and everything is rosy. Helena is living with Alison and Donnie and raising her twins in unconventional ways. Alison is throwing a baby shower that brings all the characters together. Sarah is in the process of selling the house Mrs.S was killed in, and struggling with wanting to better herself by taking her GED, and being paranoid she’ll never be good enough and dangers still around the corner. Delphine is once again back, having skipped an entire episode for literally no reason whatsoever, and back in the lab with Scott and Cosima trying to work out where the other clones are so they can be cured. At this point in time I’m of the belief Scott is either a permanent house guest, or Delphine and Cosima are in a polyamorous relationship with him because he’s always there. That’s it. The show ends happily ever after with everyone, well getting their happy ending. Except Rachel. She has to be forever alone, which is really not a good enough price for a character so damned.

Nothing in Orphan Black’s final season was exciting. Yes the nonsensical plots have dwindled, the castor clones gone, but that’s really it. The leda clones are the focus but not the focus, and I’m sorry, but having Cosima & Delphine end the show happily together does not make up for Delphine being shot. The only reason the show revived her was because of the backlash they faced over her death.

The even bigger problem with this? Orphan Black and its cast pride themselves on being friends with the LGBT community. The show is here to support and be that light for people. Countless stories have come out from viewers who thanks to Orphan Black, had the courage to be true to themselves over their sexuality. For that I congratulate the people but I cannot congratulate the show, or be happy with Cosima & Delphine ending up together, because quite frankly? I don’t care. Since the end of season 2, Cosima & Delphine’s story has been told off screen. Why should I be happy they came back together, when they had such a nonsensical break-up and Cosima was soon in bed with another woman? It makes her devastation over being told in season 4 that Delphine was dead fake. For the finale season Delphine’s screen time was minuscule. At times she should’ve been present she wasn’t, and the show in the end couldn’t even be bothered to explain. But I’m still supposed to be happy they got 2 minute of screen time at the end of the episode to be happily together?

The LGBT community wants better representation in the media. Better characterization in TV shows, to not be killed and replaced so easily, and more screen time devoted to LGBT relationships. Well how is that supposed to happen, when shows doing the absolute least, is paraded around as a celebration? It is possible to be happy an LGBT couple have ended a show alive, happy and well, whilst also criticizing a show for how they’ve handed story-lines. But people shy away from that. Coming to the end season of Orphan Black there has been criticism over Tatiana’s acting, which isn’t something you ever thought you’d read. Complaints that she’s seemed bored, and you haven’t really been able to tell the differences between the clones. That’s one complaint I can agree on as particularly during the clone swap at Felix’s art opening, it did feel like Alison, Cosima & Sarah were the exact same person changing costumes, because it did all look so bad.

The original intention of the show-runners was to end the show some seasons ago. They really should’ve gone out on the high, instead of dragging the dead horse along, because it’s ruined Orphan Black’s legacy.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

This is basically the only HAIM song I'm ever going to acknowledge. Sorry, but they're just not my thing. This song though? It gets me. I know I've been saying that a lot of recent but it's true. It's honestly wonderful for me to listen to songs and enjoy them not just because they sound good, or because I like the Artist, but because something in the song connects to me. I like the way the music, in particular the drums and guitar, build gradually. I could do with slightly better lyrics, and the music going somewhere after the chorus instead of being caught in a never-ending circle. Vocally the song feels a little bit lazy, and I know all of this seems like criticism, but I actually love it. Oh and the rest of CONTROLRadioUK HQ, who have at some point in their lives listened to more HAIM songs than me and actually think they're good, like this song as well. So it's not just something I'm loving to hate.

Fall Out Boy are a cool band. I have liked them since my mid-teens, and I wanted to feature this song last week but it's called 5 Picks for a reason. I still love you the week after, you've got a good chance of making it here. This song will probably be on the NFL Soundtrack for this season (look at me acting as if I know anything about what beloved American's call 'football'). Honestly though this song is awesome and completely Fall Out Boy. Musically this is absolutely superb, lyrically it's quite inspirational, and the video's interesting. Only sad thing is having to wait until January for the album. But you can pre-order now and 'Champion' along with 'Young and the Menace' is available to stream/download.

This song is so devastatingly beautiful. If you haven't pre-ordered the album or counting down the days until its release, look at your life choices. I've said it before and it bears repeating; PVRIS are incapable of making a bad song & every song is better than the last. Quite a feat to achieve. There's nothing else I can say that can do justice to how fantastic this song is. Another thing I say quite often, but when music is as flaw-free as this, why not let it speak for itself? OK I'll say lyrically this is mesmerizing and musically this touches my soul. That's all I've got.

OK I know they have now released the official audio for this which you can find on their Channel, but sometimes I just prefer live versions. Depending on the Artist they have more heart and it's this live version that has made me like the song so much, so it's here to stay! They have only released two singles so far from the album and it's probably a little too early to be jumping in the queue, but I honestly think this might be the first album of theirs I buy since 'Sam's Town'. I love both these singles so much, they haven't left the playlist since they were released, why not? Music is a form of art, expression, to get out all those feelings you have building inside you, and I think lyrically this song is perfect with the political discourse we're currently living in.

Is this just an excuse for me to talk about how much I love Lorde's album? Little bit. By far this isn't the best track they could've released, but I do like this track very dearly. This video is also an example of how you can have a story in a music video without having a story. Sounds weird right but totally true. On the surface this is just Lorde having fun on a beautiful island. You could almost call it a perfect place right?! (Not apologizing for that) She's having the time of her life except she actually isn't, which is the story of the song in one, and again it's just a song that gets me. For someone so young, having such a talent in writing is incredible. Most people her age and even older are just sticking to basic rhyming patterns on a decent enough beat. Lorde has never done that and it's something I can respect even if all her music isn't my cup of tea. I'll also add here that 'Supercut' is by far the best track on the album, and I really do need this to be a single. Which means it won't because flop choices are always made. But this song is gold lyrically, musically and visually and if you haven't bought/streamed the album you are really missing out.
