CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

We're starting off with quite the banger this week! You may recall last year when we featured Headhunterz & KSHMR's wonderful song 'Dharma'. That is still one of the best songs to ever meet my ears, and this little number is quite good as well. I feel as if we're living in an age over-run with EDM & dance/club tracks that all sound the same, which might be fun for the masses but it just bores the heck out of me; if I've heard it once I've heard it too much. The video for 'Mandala' isn't quite as beautiful or catching as 'Dharma' but the music is just as good, so I won't be overly critical.

I am more than aware featuring this here bearing in mind my above critic is extremely ironic. Whilst this song is OK & I like some of the beats, it's featuring here purely because I think the video is fantastic. It has so many callbacks to movies/TV shows/video games/music and as someone who spent the weekend working on a storyboard, I am so impressed by the animation in this video. Well, actually I was impressed by the animation when I first watched it & proceeded to draw it to CONTROLRadioUK HQ's attention, but I'm allowed the odd shameless plug!

If I'd had my way, I'd be featuring 'Pave' here. It's not the strongest song I've ever heard but I find it more interesting than this number. Unfortunately the rest of CONTROLRadioUK HQ didn't agree and here we are. I am to say this song has some nice funky beats and an electronic vibe which is really good. Personally a small part at the end of the chorus sounds good, but nothing about this song grabs my attention or makes it stand out (I again direct you to the critic above). Britt Nicole is an American vocalist/songwriter/recording artist and the album 'Britt Nicole' is out now.

This week is a lot of pointing out what's wrong with songs. I'd say that I'm sorry but I'm really not. I may have mentioned it once or twice but outside my work here with CONTROLRadioUK, I'm a writer and producer of many things. I have spent many an hour in the recording studio putting songs together, and getting into arguments with people when they put too much stuff into songs. You want to mix one or two genre's together? That's fine as long as the song makes sense. You want to throw a whole box of genre's together & hope with the magic of mixing it'll sound fantastic? You're on your own. That is the exact problem you have here. 'Shhh' in places sounds good & when I first played this at CONTROLRadioUK HQ I was really hopeful, but unfortunately this song is trying to do too much and it just sounds messy. The beginning of the song has a nice musical build-up that I appreciate and the under-tone beats made me feel hopeful, and as it grows I'm bouncing my head along and hoping the chorus is gonna smack down like a BAMF. Instead it just falls completely flat with a mix of like 3 different genre's, then returning to the verse music which is again good and I again really like the break beat, but then it's messy again and I'm done. RAYE is a British singer/songwriter & whilst I am critical here, as I've said there are elements to her solo work that I like so I shall be keeping an eye and hoping her next song is the third time charm.

Finishing off this week with a song I don't hate and a duo I've previously covered in the picks. Whenever a Country music song used to be recommended to me, I rejected it without a second thought. Country music wasn't for me or so I thought. 'Boomerang' is a really good song musically and lyrically. I'd advise a look into their back catalogue because WardThomas have made some nice tracks. I'll be honest and admit they don't all grab me, but I can stand listening to them which I think is healthy progress for a once confessed Country music hater. WardThomas are a British modern Country music duo and their album 'Cartwheels' is available now. I could make a comment on the 'modern' thing but I think you lovely folks have had enough of me for once week.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

Quite simply this is a beautiful song with an empowering & thought provoking video.

This song is very much a grower for me. When I first heard it I wasn't sure where it was going; lyrically it hits the emotions & was picked by CONTROLRadioUK HQ for the story behind the song. Musically it's a little weak for me and on the first couple of listens doesn't really go anywhere. Hence grower. You probably recognize Kiesza from the smash that was Hideaway, but she has been keeping busy and we're excited to see what she comes out with in the future.

OK so when I showed this to CONTROLRadioUK HQ the reaction was 'of course you'd like this'. This is a reaction I am typically met with as I guess some people just can't handle a superior taste in music, but this is a little beauty of a song. Since I like to take the credit for everything I won't thank recommendations for this. Instead I shall comment on the fact this song does start off slow, but then it kicks it up a notch and is really quite fabulous. Karmina are an American indie/pop duo made up of two sisters.

Sometimes you watch a TV show, hear a song and it just clicks with you. That's very much the case here and whilst I'm forbidden from mentioning what said show I heard this on is, I can say that this song is so powerful it grabbed my attention right away and I spent 3 days searching to find out what it was and who by. The video is good but it's the song that truly grabs me as musically & lyrically it is so hauntingly beautiful, and stays with you long after the songs finished. Dean Lewis is an Australian based musician and definitely one to look out for.

To finish off this weeks picks we have MUNA, who are fast on the way to stealing the crown of my favorite new band on 2017. As soon as I saw this notification I knew this song was going to be on the picks, regardless of what my fellow peers at CONTROLRadioUK HQ thought (but thankfully enough they agree with my as always superior taste). This song isn't quite as strong as 'I Know A Place' but it's not far off. It's again got some fantastic lyrics & a kick-down beat which won over CONTROLRadioUK HQ. For me personally I haven't been this excited about a follow-up song (Which I should stress is NOT necessarily a band/artists next song following their debut, but the next new song CONTROLRadioUK HQ hears following introduction to said band/artists) since Allie X. Their album 'About U' is out on February 3rd and due to the release of Dua Lipa's debut album being put back to 2nd June 2017, 'About U' may end up being the first album of 2017 that I purchase (Considering I buy around 5-8 albums a year that's quite a feat)

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: 2015

Welcome to our first Throwback Thursday of 2017 and what better way to kick things off than travelling to the not so distant past of 2015 and bringing you 5 of our favorite music videos!

Artist: Twenty One Pilots
The Song: Stressed Out
Released: 2015

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
So this was a bit of a smash, the first Twenty One Pilots songs I heard and since then they've become one of my favorite bands. The video was what first drew me to the song because yes! If you have a music video that is half interesting, I will stay and listen to your back catalogue/future collection. The lyrics are the center point of the song though, with a focus on childhood nostalgia I think we can all resonate with and the pressures of adulthood.

Artist: Allie X
The Song: Catch
Released: 2015

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Have I ever mentioned that Allie X is one of my favorite female singers & seriously under-rated? Oh, I have? Well a reminders always good! I have yet to listen to a song of Allie X that I don't like. Her up-tempo numbers have great lyrics to accompany a fantastic beat, and her ballads are just as amazing.

Artist: Brandon Flowers
The Song: I Can Change
Released: 2015

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
This wonderful number was picked by my good people at CONTROLRadioUK HQ who like the songs sound, and I can agree with that. The Killers & Brandon Flowers can be hit and miss for me but this is a top track. I also like how colorful this lyric video is, but mostly I am here for the sound which has a nice 80's vibe to it.

Artist: Kelly Clarkson
The Song: Piece By Piece
Released: 2015

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
Basically I challenge anyone to watch this performance and not break down in tears. Not that it needs to be said but Kelly Clarkson is a fantastic singer who makes great music.

Artist: Sia
The Song: Elastic Heart
Released: 2015

CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts:
I know all publicity is good publicity, but I seriously did not understand the criticism for this video when it was released & the negative comments given about it to this day. We've got an excellent dancer here in Maddie combining with a good actor in Shia to bring us a really good music video. The lyrics are once again thought provoking & I love the music on this so much I tracked down an instrumental of this song, and I honestly can't say which is better. It's been explained that the video has them portraying two different states of a person, and music like any other form of art is all about expression.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so heck out our picks below.

Chase & Status are very much hit & miss for me. Sometimes they come out with a song I can't stop playing for months, and sometimes they come out with a song I turn off after 5 seconds. This has been in the CONTROLRadioUK 5 Picks queue for a while now (you can probably tell by the date on the song). Others here at CONTROLRadioUK HQ like this song a lot more than me. They like the beat which I can agree with & think it's a nice little tune to perk up your Monday. For me personally it is an ok song; there's nothing about it that'd make it stand out from a crowd & after being a major fan of it for a while I'm now very much past Dubstep which I blame on over-use. Chase & Status are an English Electronic Music Production duo.

This was done as a special for Pete Waterman back in 2015, but I only came across this last week in the midst of Steps announcing their 20th Anniversary Reunion. Deeper Shade Of Blue is my favorite Steps song. I've collected numerous versions of it over the years, but this is by far the most breathtakingly beautiful version of it your ears will ever have the pleasure of listening to. I've featured Steps in various Throwback Thursday articles, so I won't re-write an essay here (as much as it is tempting). I was a massive fan of Steps as a child, their spilt was devastating for my early teen self & I enjoyed H & Claire's short-lived duo. If Claire does ever come out with a solo album I will throw all my money at it, because this woman can sing! Instead we have another reunion to get through which I will try my best to join other fans in enjoying, but it is difficult to do so.

Getting my critic out the way first; this is one of the most pointless music videos my eyes have ever been forced to acknowledge. I know it's just a lyric video but it's been proven you can do a lot with them, and this isn't it. When I showed this to CONTROLRadioUK HQ I scrolled down the page so they couldn't see the video, and instead let the song do the job for two and it worked out very well. Is this the best song you'll hear this year? Not even close. But it's got nice beats, decent chorus to hook you into the song and exposes your ears to a good MØ collab. That's right! No Diplo or Bieber in sight and it's wonderful.

My second critic of the week (that's right the festive period of kindess is well & truly over); I cannot stand unneccesary rap. Unless I'm listening to a song of that genre or it adds depth to the song DO. NOT. HAVE. IT. I understand if you're trying to bring an Artist/Band to another market having someone from said market feature on the song with them works, but it doesn't always have to be a rapper. Little Mix did quite well having Jason Derulo feature on 'Secret Love Songs' with them & I excuse Sean Paul featuring on 'Hair' because he did actually bring something to it. Here? Kent Jones part comes close to ruining the song for me. Apart from that I do think this song is a decent number. The video doesn't do much for me, but the music thankfully goes somewhere and it's a decent follow-up to 'Who Do You Think Of' which brought them to mainstream attention.

This without a doubt is one of my songs of 2017. I know that's a pretty big statement considering we're only in our second week of the year, but it's true. I've taken a glimpse through their back catalogue & I can't decide which of their songs is my favorite because they are all so fantastic. They've also toured with another of my favourite bands GroupLove, so you definitely know you're onto a winner here. 'I Know A Place' is a great infectious number you can't resist dancing along to. It's also got a meaningful lyrics and a terrific hook for thos chorus that puts the whole song together so effortlessly. MUNA are an American band and their EP's 'More Perfect' & 'Loudspeaker' are currently available to stream & buy, and you can pre-order their album 'About You' which is due for release on the 3rd of Feb.
