CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

First up? I don't know who decided this trend of putting the feature Artist after the songs title, instead of after the main Artist but I do not like it. I really wish this trend would stop but unfortunately we seem to be stuck with it forever so look forward to my incessant complaints. 'Lost In Your Light' is firmly in the ok-ish category. There's nothing about the song to really make it stand out, the video has no story, dancing is even worse and the song feels very lazy. The only things that save this song are the music, and Miguel. Rumor is Dua Lipa's debut album was delayed so that this feature could be included. Based on 3 listens in which this song hasn't become a grower, it's no a decision justified. Since I came across Dua Lipa's music late last year/early this year I have been excited for her album. She's a great singer/songwriter which is rare for Pop Artists these days. However if the albums more in line with the tone of her most recent features, I fear disappointment reigning in the kingdom soon.

Another forgettable song saved by the chorus and feature Artist. I'll resist repeating the above rant about feature Artist placement, and instead say I'm quite surprised by the hype surrounding this song. Despite what society in all its protests will have you believe, there isn't THAT much LGBT representation out there. If you have LGBT characters on a show they're soon written off, LGBT musicians don't get enough press to alert you to their existence, or the fact saying aloud in public you're LGBT may be the last thing you ever do. I guess that's why everyone clamors on-board anything that has the smallest whiff of being LGBT, and I can understand it. However over-hyping the most basic of things gives the impression that handing out the smallest breadcrumb is fine, job is done and there's nothing to see here. That's the problem I have with this song. Musically it is ok but everything else about it is forgettable. Songs about missing an ex have been done by better LGBT Artists. What's more with those Artists I truly believe what the song is trying to sell me. With 'Strangers' all I feel is an Artist climbing aboard a gravy train for the attention, and lapping up the congrats for doing the bare minimum.

If you're a woman you could've probably made a billion pounds for every time a guy said 'You're not like most girls' and a bonus off their bemused expression from not understanding why that's not a compliment. So for that I give Hailee Steinfeld credit for coming up with a song that is all about empowering women. I really wish we could all stick together, instead of allowing society to tear us apart and pit us against one another. Hailee Steinfeld is the prime sort of Artist for a song like this due to her young fanbase, and we can only hope that in the future we do all manage to stick together. However whilst lyrically this song is great, musically it's not powerful enough. This should be a girl-power anthem not a summer dance banger. Wilst I get what the videos trying to achieve, it comes off as cheesy and a little too preachy. Sometimes you need to step back and produce a simple visual concept, because the content of the song is good enough to sell itself.

Utter Carly Rae Jepsen's name and you'll be met by a herd of people proclaiming her to be the Indie Queen of Pop, presenting you with a catalog of bops and questioning why she isn't huge. The answer to that last part would be lyrically her songs are quite good, but musically? They tend to fall a little short. Where the songs could go high they go low, or in other cases nowhere. It's extremely frustrating as a listener knowing the potential that is there and not being tapped into. Thankfully 'Cut to the Feeling' doesn't have that issue. Musically this song is a belter which grows as it goes along and lyrically it's solid as well. The only wish is for Carly to be a more consistent Artist.

Have you ever pressed play on a song and could've sworn you'd heard of the Artist/Band before but Google gives you nothing? It's really annoying but thankfully this song isn't. I loved Dubstep when it first hit the mainstream a few years ago, and was so, so sad when it was replaced by mindless EDM Beats. Use it in spits and spurts and Dubstep is great - overload a track with it and you sound like a gigantic mess. Thankfully Krewella seem to have picked up on this and have given us a beautiful track. I like the message of the song lyrically, Dubstep being mixed into the chorus works perfectly, having scenery in a video is always a plus to me and even though the video doesn't have an exact story to it, I can work with it because it has an all round great vibe.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Worst Songs Part 3

Yes it is indeed that time of the week again. Continuing our worst song special, this week we're looking at bands and questioning why they hated us so much to do this to our ears.

Little known fact? I love Steps. I know I hide it extremely well, but they were my favorite band as a child. Even they though are not exempt from producing the odd dud. Another little known fact? Steps are at their best when Claire is on lead vocals. She's got so much power in her vocals, can sing a vast amount of genres, knows when to go high and low, and is also excellent on background. I can take H or Faye on lead as they are good singers but I won't like the song as much. When Lisa takes the wheel instead? I'm sorry but it's a no from me. I touched on it at the beginning of this special but I'll reiterate; when a lot of production goes into covering your vocals, other people have to sing on top of you to mask how weak you are or neither of those factors are involved and the music is incredibly weak to facilitate your vocals? You really shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a microphone. If you think I'm just being overly mean, I suggest you search for any live performance of a Steps song where Lisa sings.

Another little known fact? Mel C is the only Spice Girl that knows what a note is. It actually boggles my mind that Geri, Emma, Mel B & Victoria have had attempts at solo careers, and that Geri was the most successful out of the foursome because they're horrible. I know I've never been a fan of the Spice Girls but since they were so big when I was a kid, I have unfortunately heard 90% of their songs and I just don't get the success. Choosing a worst song from them was extremely difficult because bar 'Viva Forever' they're all horrible, guilty pleasures. 'Say You'll Be There' ended up being the pick of a bad bunch as I like videos with stories and this doesn't have one, I don't like generic lyrics that aim for rhyming couplets which this has in bundles and when only one person in the band can sing? Not a good idea to give each member a solo part.

Same criticism I have with all these songs in regards to the singing, but this is even worse on the account of objectifying women, and a video that is parodying other music videos by far superior bands. Oh and The Wanted didn't deserve the limited success they did manage to achieve, and did everyone a favor when they split.

I don't think any explanation is required for this.

If you're going to cover a song make sure you're adding something to it, otherwise don't bother. Though I shall admit the limited scenery is quite pretty.

I love this. It's so subtle, so beautiful, and so powerful, it's fantastic. Sometimes songs need to attack with all their might to be able to gain a grip on you, and sometimes simplicity is best. There's no need to override the power of the video & lyrics here by overloading the song musically, and I love Artists/Bands that know when to play it simple and when to attack. Verite's debut album 'Somewhere In Between' is out on the 23rd of June but you can pre-order now to get 'Phase Me Out' along with this beauty. If the songs so far are anything to go by, we're in for one hell of a treat.

This is a really nice chill-out song. It takes a few listens to warm up to but once you do, you'll be bopping your head along like there's no tomorrow. Lyrically this isn't exactly a masterpiece, though it does have some good ideas about it to separate from what has fast become the generic norm. Coin are an American Indie/Pop and their album 'How Will You Know If You Never Try' is out now.

I spent half of this video wondering where I'd seen the lead singer before, and eventually realized he's Ross Lynch. I was quite surprised I recognized him since I've only ever seen shows he's been part of in passing, but apparently it was enough to leave an impression. Unfortunately, this song doesn't. Lyrically this song is formed of rhyming couplets and an uninspiring chorus, whilst the music is quite weak to compliment the even worse vocals. The focus of Ross in the video doesn't work either, since he's very much carry a DGAF attitude, which is extremely off-putting. I don't know if that's a deliberate move on the director's part and I'm just missing what this video is trying to do but it's just not working. However despite the critic from listening to the rest of the songs from R5's Extended EP 'Addictions', R5 are decent to listen to. The music won't blow you away unless you're already a fan, but they're certainly not the worst thing you'll hear this summer.

I don't know what I can say about this song apart from its a BOP. Yes it has that same generic EDM/Pop crossover sound that is infecting music right now, and one I shall complain about endlessly. Here though Whethan and Charli XCX are a perfect combination in making it all sound so fresh, and the only disappointing thing about this song is how short it is.

In parts this song is good, and again it'll probably take a few listens to warm up to it though even then you'll still find issues. I'm all for Artists mixing up genres of music because when it's done right, it feels like heaven in your eardrums. When it's done wrong though, you're left with a boring mess that puts you to sleep. 'Say My Name' isn't quite at mind-numbing levels but you will spend the majority of the song wondering what could've been, and it is so disappointing when a song with great potential falls flat. Tove Stryke is a Swedish singer/songwriter, and if you're wondering why that name sounds familiar? She superbly covered 'Baby One More Time' by Britney Spears in 2015.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Worst Songs Part 2

And so we continue this epic torment, where we question how on earth someone decided these songs were good and more to the point? Why our ears have been subjected to such awful noise.

Jason Derulo was good when he actually made music. Yes we all mocked the 'Jason Derulo' but at least the music was bearable. Now it's just sexist trash with no point to it, but we should celebrate the fact he's still a good dancer. No thanks!

If we put aside PSY was turned into a novelty act and this song played to death? It's actually quite a good tune with great music that you can love, and appreciate PSY's music as a collective instead of being known for the dance. But this is #TBT Worst Songs and wow! I can't believe this was released in 2012 when it feels like just yesterday I couldn't escape it.

Yes this song has an interesting dance number to it. But I'm 1) Not here for Ed Sheeran in general since he is extremely over-rated and 2) Well his songs aren't that good. Society has invented such phrases as 'nice guy' 'fck boy' and 'slut-shaming', none of which I'm here for and this song plays into at least two of those conventions.

This is less of a Throwback and more of a plain awful song. Musically it's ok without being spectacular, but lyrically? This song is not good. I don't know if it's an attempt at shouting out to the LGBT community, or the usual failure at innuendo's. Either way? It's a not from me.

This song annoyed the crap out of me growing up. I don't know what it is with society picking up a song by a Foreign Artist and deciding it's the joke song of the year etc, but it's incredibly disrespectful, racist in demeaning the Artists work and not something I want to heart 24/7.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

Here at CONTROLRadioUK we're always on the look-out for music be it for the playlist, or just because we think the tracks are pretty neat so check out our picks below.

Is this real life, or just a fantasy? Thankfully it's very much the first one. You may not know this but I am a bit of a fan of Allie X. I may have mentioned once or twice that she is criminally under-rated and I am yet to hear a song of hers that I don't like, and 'Paper Love' continues that. It's not as in your face as 'All The Rage' or have an addictive beat like 'That's So Us', but it's still a pretty great track. Even better news? CollXtion II is out on the 7th of June which isn't information you need to tell me twice.

We have had a lot of fantastic music drop of late, and that is not something I'm complaining about. Lyrically this song has a decent enough message to it but musically? It doesn't go anywhere at all. Not low, not high, not even mid-range; it's stuck on the exact same note all the way through. In fact the song is so one-note that the only way you know it's ended is after sitting in silence for a minute, wondering if your computers broken down because you're now sitting in silence. No point having decent lyrics if you don't have a good beat to accompany it.

We're now approaching summer. Which as I've mentioned previously means dance songs are going to take over the waves. 99% of them aren't going to be any good, in fact they'll be downright awful, but overplayed to such an extent that we learn to like them simply because there's no other music to save us. With all this in mind consider this song a rarity of one that you will not hate. It's got a really nice airy feeling to it, the scenery mixed into the video is nice to look at, the lyrics aren't bad and listening to this will take you to that lovely sandy beach you're yearning for.

Give a song a chance and it will blow your mind. That is the moral to this story and something my dear people at CONTROLRadioUK HQ discovered, before they like me got their groove on. I can't really find words to describe how much I love this song which is always a good thing. Lyrically this is fantastic and musically? It's absolute paradise. This song follows the basic formula of music; start off low, hit the mids in the pre-chorus and then smash you round the head with genius in the chorus and repeat. It's so simple, so easy, and yet so many Artists for some reason scientists are still trying to figure out struggle and give us duds. Thankfully Nothing But Thieves is not one of them and this song will continue to be on repeat for the next month. Nothing But Thieves are an Alternative English Rock band and their new album 'Broken Machine' is due to be released soon.

I don't know who told Paramore they had the right to give us two magnificent songs in a matter of weeks, but I am not complaining and neither should you.

CONTROLRadioUK Presents Throwback Thursday: Worst Songs Part 1

This is one Throwback Thursday Special I do not enjoy bringing to you because I hate worst song lists. Music is subjective, we all like what we like and picking fault with peoples work is not my thing. Unfortunately no matter how non-judgmental you want to be, there is ALWAYS a song that comes along every once in a while and you can't help but question it. Was the Producer deaf, did the Computer's auto-tune fail, who on earth thought this was a good idea etc. Researching this ever so un-wonderful topic because yes! We here at CONTROLRadioUK are consummate professionals, who heavily research every subject that we write about. In cases like this it's not always nice on the ears but from doing said research I realized there are a lot of songs that fall into the above categories, and for the next 4 weeks? I'm bringing those songs to you.

Sound wise this song is actually pretty great. Lyrically it's a little generic but this could have still worked well if someone apart from Lisa-Scott Lee was singing it. I mentioned in my 5 picks this week that just because you're a good dancer & actress doesn't mean you're a good singer. In this case just because you're a good dancer doesn't mean you belong anywhere near a microphone. That may sound harsh, but it's honest. When you have to be multi-tracked to oblivion? Step away from the microphone and don't look back. When you have to be multi-tracked & the song heavily produced into oblivion? Seriously why are you still here?! Now you could say that maybe it's just the track that doesn't suit her, but Lisa's.... lack of vocals to be kind are fairly prominent throughout Steps discography. There is a reason why she barely sings solo & when she does it's again either multi-tracked or someone is singing with her. Live performances are even worse.

I'm gonna save my ears the stress of playing this song all the way through and you my dear audience about 6 paragraphs of criticism, by simply referring you to the above and add that Cheryl has no place being near a recording studio or judging people on their abilities. Yes I know she left X Factor already! My question is how she was ever on in the first place.

This is a bit of a cheat because unlike my peers at CONTROLRadioUK HQ, I do think Lady Gaga can sing. Dancing no, but she is a great singer and songwriter. However this video is horrible. To watch it is to laugh in horror at how empty and useless this video is.

This song was fun when no-one paid attention to the title. Then it became a thing with the uproar and someone decided to focus the video on said uproar. When you do that, the moments ruined and it all becomes incredibly boring. I still like the song but this is one of the videos that happenedbutneverhappened.gif

So this is a worst song and worst video. Literally the only good part of this video is when the guy dives into the swimming pool, and that's only because I really like water. Dare I say this video is even more pointless than 'Edge of Glory'. It's not clever or imaginative, but boring, useless and enough to put you to sleep (which is actually a fact, I did fall asleep with this once playing on the TV) If this had a better music video the song would probably not be as grating, but that's a very thin probability.

CONTROLRadioUK Picks 5 Songs You May Not Have Heard Of

This is such a beautiful song. I really don't know how else to describe it. Usually when an Artist does a song as a break-up 'reply', they can be problematic. We get talk of "good girls" and "bad girls" and how a person has been so hard done by, when they've only ever done their best and it's not something you want to listen to. None of those elements are here, just a simple break-up story and it's beautiful. Molly has given us a Rock anthem in 'Prom Queen' and a nice enough Pop song in 'Good Die Young' and now we've got a simple ballad, which is harder to pull off than you'd think. There's always the temptation when the music goes up just that slight bit to hit it with all you've got, but you have to hold back and resist overpowering the music which Molly does superbly and then gives us a fantastic ending to the song.

PVRIS ARE BACK! AND THEY'RE AS WONDERFUL AS EVER! That's all I have to contribute! Seriously PVRIS are an amazing band and I am so glad that we're finally getting a new album because it's felt like 84years.gif (I promise I will stop doing that eventually), and they're as good as they've ever been. I am very much looking forward to the new album. This video is typical PVRIS (because yes! They are sooo good I am required to write their name in capitals) and this is both a lyrical and musical masterpiece. 'My House' will always be my favorite songs of theirs followed by 'You and I' but 'Heaven' is definitely rounding off the top 3. Their new album 'All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell' is released on August 4th and available for pre-order now. I can neither confirm nor deny reports of my own purchase as I'm too busy listening to this on repeat.

My say something bad and say something nice quota for the day; The dance moves in this video are quite impressive, even if Kat Graham's singing skills could do with a bit of work. My follow up to that? Just because you're a good actress and a great dancer does not mean you can add ok-ish singer to that trio. Sometimes being a singer & an actress works out for people, but not here. The music is very basic and I'm sorry to say so is Kat's voice. Granted she's not the worst female singer I've ever comes across (That lovely list is coming up in our Throwback Thursday Special later) but she's also not the greatest. My good people at CONTROLRadioUK HQ happen to like dancing and videos which feature dancing a great deal, because they're a big fan of choreography (as the endless watches of the Step Up Movies inform me) which is why this video is featured here. Plus the fact I am occasionally over-ruled in the voting, but a big enough person to admit this song does have promise even if it's not a lot.

This is going to be an unfortunately short piece because outside of this song I know nothing about Tonight Alive. I have no idea whether they'd a band, duo, quartet or solo singer. I just know this song sounds really good and as I have mentioned once or twice, doing these picks opens my ears up to new music. It's my favorite part of all this and something I'm ever thankful for. I am also reliably told that this music is right up my street, and after the first billion times of being told that my only answer is you'rewelcome.gif (If you don't love Sadie on Awkward look at your life choices)

I'm beginning to feel like 2017 is the year of musical comebacks and honestly? When you're giving me Paramore, PVRIS, Hurts & Steps? Not hating it. Elements of this music video make for hard watching, but it fits perfectly with the lyrics and I just absolutely adore this song. It's so perfect and I need more music from Hurts stat.
